Default Traditional Japanese Dance

Okay, so my school's Japanese Culture Club hosts a dinner each year, and there is entertainment.

This year, we're doing several dances (Bon-Odori, Yosakoi, and a modern JPop dance). I did Bon-Odori last year, which was a lot of fun. But because I can't make it to all of the practice times, I signed up for Yosakoi.

Today was my first practice.

Egads, my legs are on fire.

At least next practice, everyone will be learning something, so it should go a bit slower and not be as brutal. (today we did last year's dance for conditioning; we're learning this year's dance next week)

Also, this is a video of Yosakoi dance - it's what I found that's most similar to the one we're doing (with a lot of squatting). Ours isn't quite as fun since we only have like 15 people. But whatever.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...=yosakoi&hl=en

Edited to add: I also like this one because there is a Gaikokujin in it (OMGZ!) He's pretty obvious to spot.

No. I don't remember what it's called.

It has crossdressing, though.

THATS MY VIDEO!!!!!

I originally uploaded that video to show my family and friends.

HA!

Yes I am the big black gaikokujin...there were a total of five of us.(I was the only black one)

Yosakoi tends to encompass all kinds of dance it isn't a specific dance, outside of the fact that in competition you have to use Naruko if your dancing style is Yosakoi

I fuckin' love Yosakoi.

Me and a couple of friends joined Nagasaki University's team while I was in Japan. The greatest people I've ever met, and the dances were awesome. I got to compete in Kumamoto too (which we won). Greatest thing I did while in Japan. That video is during the competition in Kumamoto.

I learned five dances in the 4 months I was there. 2 were original dances created by "toppuu" (the name of the club) the one in that video is originally made by them as is the music. The other 3 dances were dances that many yosakoi groups know hey Lisa M, ask if they know Soran Bushi OR Freedom.

Ya know...its hard for me to refer to Yosakoi as traditional because its pretty contemporary. Some of the groups during the competition had a clear hip-hop influence in their dances and it could be heard in the music too.

The dance that we did last year was a lot less hip-hop and a lot more traditional. Then again, instead of having a Jpop dance, the "modern" dance was a hip-hop dance.

That's pretty funny that I found the video with you in it XD I watched a lot, and it was the most similar in terms of squatting all the time. My legs still hurt.

Definitely a good workout!

Yeah the workouts were killer and your body never gets used to it, well you stop feeling like complete death, which is how I felt in the begining but after that you're always drained but you feel great afterwards. Since we were doing it in the summer, its nice and humid in Nagasaki in the summer. Towards the end of June and start of July we had girls pass out during practice, a couple went to the hospital. What can I say...we beefcaked hard as hell at practice...actually a couple passed out at the competition also.

Actually I attribute their passing out to being small japanese girls AND drinking tea like its gatorade during practice. It seems like all Japanese people do this...drink tea while doing a physical activity as if its water or a sports drink and no you might as well be drinking soda its just as bad. Even after I told them about it and they emailed everyone telling them to bring either water or a sports drink they still insisted on bringing tea.

There is another video on google to...of the first dance I ever performed, in front of Nagasaki Station. In that video I twisted my ankle and you can clearly see it in the video...damn I was pissed.

Another reason I loved it...those guys loved to drink. Its always fun when after a major performance either right after or the next day going to an Izakaiya with 60-80 people and then proceed to get eat and drink all we want and get totally hammered.

Masta - we're actually doing a dance that was coreographed by the captain of the Nagasaki University Yosakoi team, since our captain is friends with her. Small world, eh?

Really?

The current head Captain is a guy though. Vice Captain, perhaps or a Captain who graduated already? You didn't happen to get a name did you? There were a few girls that were in the inner circle of people who ran the club.

I want to be back there sooo badly. At the end of the month is the Sasebo Festival and its the largest Yosakoi festival in Kyushu, every year they create a new dance and show it at that festival (along with new uniforms (which I'm getting) and happi). Out of the six or so foreigners that joined only 1 is left because he's staying in Japan for a full year(I was there a semester and the others were finishing their full year that semester)...damn I envious.

I thought she said Captain. Maybe it was one of the old captains? I don't know.
