Ive, been reading stuff about these groups of dudes in japan, who get on Subway carts, and molest women. I mean, ive read articles about these dudes, they range from, Fathers, buissnesmen, even those monk dudes, weird, anyways ive been doing research on these guys, and seem to me that they're pretty extensive and stuff, and actually pretty well coordinated.LOL i even saw this video, where they surrounded two poor women, ill leave the rest of that stuff up to your imagination. anyways, if you guys happen to have any information on CHIKAN. and stuff like that, please contact me! thanks

other than it's sexual predation and they all are pathetic, I don't have much to say on it.
Why are you so interested in chikan, and "stuff like that"? do you get your rocks off on this shit? |

EDIT: ^ Beat me to the punch.
Meh... I know it's Japan, but surely *that* isn't a standard of entertainment. (WARNING: Generalisation ahead.) Though when you think about it, it's amazingly ironic that a nation of women without much body definition would be so plagued by middle-aged guys trying to grope them. It seems that this thing would be more common elsewhere, though I suppose population density and law enforcement has something to do with it. Either way, I still don't find molestation of any sort to be "hilarious". Pathetic and sickening, but not at all amusing. |

Of all the women I know and have met in Japan, I can't think of a single one who wasn't a victim of chikan when she was a JHS/SHS student. Some of them got it every single day.
Amazingly enough, it seems to stop once they get out of high school. |

My girlfriend was in college and got groped on the train once.
Which started my long and passionate hatred of most Japanese men. |

Is it really amazing, considering the lolicon image most critics of Japan have painted? But hey, if you were REALLY a sexual deviant, I guess it means there's plenty of meat left as far as older, mature 20 year old women go. Given however, that they're tainted meat at this point.

No wonder public transportation is so popular in Japan...
...All jokes aside, this kind of thing REALLY sucks. Is there any major action going against this? Like, in the US when something massive like this has been happening, angry mothers start campaigns against it. Nothing like that happens there? |

The closest thing I've heard to "action" is putting up big warning signs where the situation is worst, and the super-rare women only car... that aside it seems like pickpockets in Italy: sucks, but just so common and tough to deal with that there's not much TO do.

I don't understand why women don't slap the guys who touch them. Why don't they slap them or use a taser? Haha...little Japanese girl tasering some old perv. Gold!

One time late at night 3 guys were eyeballing some poor girl. She was obviously uncomfortable and it looked like things might escalate.

^very cool sign. There should have been a german suplex somewhere in there, though.
Any words on how a cop handles defenders who go ape-shit on chikans? I'm thinking KO punches, groin kicks, wrist-sprains...because in honesty, there isn't enough fear in the hearts of these guys to NOT act in the way that they do. In the end, though, we all know that if the girls do nothing about it, they only give power to the mysoginy. |

I don't get it either. Bit of a conversation with a Japanese 20 years old woman:
Her: What happens when someone does chikan here (Germany) on the tram? Me: The guy will get slapped, real hard. Her: Really? Women are strong here. Me: Not all. Some might cry for help, and people around would help her directly. Or at least call the police. Guess people in Japan would do the same. Her: No, I don't think they would. Me: Why? And if they don't you'd have to defend yourself and slap the guy. Her: I couldn't do that. Me: Why? Her: ....hm... because... this one time, a girl got chikan and she slapped that guy and yelled at him... but the other people in the subway didn't see that she got chikan and stared at her... it was so embarrasing to her... Did that clear up things to me? Not really ![]() Anyway, you might know this sign already, but I think it's hilarious: http://www.engrish.com/detail.php?im...ate=2005-04-15 |

I would have no qualms about slapping a guy who did chikan.
Unfortunately, I'm not flexible enough anymore to do a proper suplex, but I think a crotch throw could be just as effective. |

I do wonder that too. I mean, especially as a gaijin. Would YOU get arrested for hitting or insulting a chikan ans saving a girl, because you're gaijin and they assumed you were just picking a fight with an old perverted fart? |

No, It's a good point. Women being too shy to speak out really makes many of the problems worse. I once had a class with 10 women(this happens sometimes in English conversation schools). Anyways out of the 10 women 8 had been groped at some point, some of them more than once. The other two had been flashed, along with 4 other women. (out of a group of 10 men how many have been a chikan.....) When I asked what they did, not a single one had called for help or fought back. They just gave him dirty looks or asked him to stop. A friend of mine told me that when she was 13 someone offered her money for sex on the platform in a busy station. She said she just ran away. These dudes are everywhere, but they get away with it here in Japan. The other thing is it's mostly the 22-32 year old males. They got no money, no girl friend, no life, all they got is a really stressful job and a long commute. Chikans are not only the old men like most people think. |

Judging on the reactions of these girls, the girl probably would resent you herself, for causing a scene. I personally think a more effective solution would be like, mace or something XD. like "chikan mace", and if they complain about being maced, everyone knows he's a perv anyway. Hmm...is the OP going to become a professional chikan or something? It's such unnecessary information...heh
I think the thing women are supposed to do is just yell out "CHIKAN!". I guess the most women do tho is just give them angry looks or tell them to stop it. No mace, no slaps, no German suplexes (no room to do it anyway on the crowded train). I hate chikan anyway. |

Unfortunately, most of the time the girl has no idea who did it. On a truly crowded train, you'll all packed in like sardines...there's just no way to tell who did what.
So a girl can say she got chikaned to the police, but then unless she has the guy who did it, and can prove that he did it, all she gets from the police is a "Well, sucks, sorry..." And it doesn't seem to be something the police are campaigning hard against. Of course, most women just kind of grin and bear it, cause the whole process of reporting the chikan in itself is probably too embarrasing. This is a country where women don't even report rape. How do you fix it? It's gonna take a little more than women-only train cars. |

But the women-only trains are a step in the right direction. Well temporarily at least.
It'll take a really profound change in people's thinking to stop this problem. As you know Japanese people are never fast about changing their way of thinking. The police are lazy. The "chikan wa hanzai" (groping is a crime) posters are pointless. Everyone knows that. Filing a police report is HELL. So let the women grin and bear it, Japanese men don't seem to mind. I think only westerners get upset about this. |
