Horror video games...which do you like best? The jump-out-and-boo scares of Resident Evil? The dark, disturbing alternate realities of Silent Hill? The puzzle-solving troubles of Clocktower? Something that isn't in a series? What's your favorite and why? Discuss.
My favorite is Silent Hill 3, for graphics and sheer atmosphere. Nothing really wrong with it except for somewhat basic combat. The musical score was also excellent.
My close second being Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Excellent gameplay and a plotline for the ages, but the graphics did not do anything at all with the hardware it was based on(Gamecube), and the it really wasn't all that scary.
An even closer third comes Resident Evil 4. Gorgeous graphics, entertaining(if not exactly classic)characters, and some of the best gameplay ever but its simply not scary at all and the plotline just...stunk.
An honorable mention goes to a little known gem on the PS2, called Kuon. The graphics are gorgeous(the characters actually look japanese!), the plotline was wonderful, and the puzzles were something new. However, besides the puzzles the gameplay was downright painful, the monsters repeated themselves WAY too much(there were maybe five in the whole game), and it was way too short(15 hours, and I took my time).
I would mention Koudelka or Parasite Eve, but I think they're more of RPGs really.

Ooo, I loved Clocktower. I haven't played a lot of the ones you listed so I can't really comment on them. I liked Clocktower mainly because it was so creepy, those are mean little boys.. :(
There's a horror game on the NES called Sweet Home, it's fairly creepy too, for being an NES game. The music gets to me after awhile :( The story is something else too.. :(
Another is this computer game my sister sent me called Dark Fall, it's like a find and use type puzzle game too. I liked it :p

I played and like Silent Hill 2 at the time, and the wealth of clues jsut led me to believe there was some really big polt line going on, but in the end, no, no there really wasn't.
Resident Evil just leaves me cold with all the running from one place to another, and back again, and back again, and back again to pick up certain items use them in certain places, drop the result in another place and on and on.
Can't they make a horror game that isn't searching the entire map over and over for 30 or 40 times for that one thing, that thing, that thing I sent you.
Sorry, lapsed into something there. :)

I like Silent Hill 3. I was so scared playing that game, and I'm not scared of anything!

Oh yeah, I'm also awaiting MGS4. Hurrah for Senile Snake.
Edit: Oh fuck. I posted that on the wrong thread. Clever me.
Edit 2: Actually, while I'm here I might as well give System Shock 2 a mention. That's one of the very few 'scary' games that I actually found scary.

Anyone played the Fatal Frame games?
Silent Hill doesn't hold a candle to this one.

Fatal Frame I and II are the best.
System Shock II is also nice.
Resident evil is allright - though the more 'action based' ones like OUtbreak suck ass.
I played Silent HIll 4: The room. but the fighting system was just too clumsy to make it any fun. Its not scary to be a pipe wielding pansy that cant hit a dog without falling over.

Perhaps I wasn't as calloused when I played this game, but Silent Hill, by far, scared the most crap out of me than any other game. The environments, the enemies, the music... Those damn little kids in the school area... Good lord, no.
Then I would probably have to say Fatal Frame... Damn did that game scare the hell out of me. I hated the fact they seemed to research when and where the ghosts should appear to take advantage of a person's sense of security. Weird stuff. I remember the most disturbing part of the game being when you have to fight this little girl in a well... I felt sad, scared, and creeped the hell out all at once. Especially with her final words... "I've been waiting... for so long..." O.O Creepy ass biznatch!
Ehem... I wanted to put Eternal Darkness up there, but I don't feel it was the same as traditional horror games... It didn't really scare me as much as it disturbed the hell out of me. Not like the enemies were too scary. No, it was the damn insanity taking hold. And the music to go along with it was perfect for creeping me out. Though I do admit I jumped at the bath tub scene... (People that have played this well know damn well what I speak about).
I played a little of Silent Hill 2, but I stopped very quickly. I think I messed the whole thing up for myself when I played the game at night to the point you first get into some apartment buildings. Now I regret not continuing on... I wanted to see Pyramid Head.
Silent Hill 3 was scary, but not as scary as Silent Hill was for me. I guess I had become more calloused at this point.
Yeah I get scared with these games... I'm very glad to see I'm not the only one.

The Silent Hill series of games, hands down. Those games are disturbing, and apparently I'm a sick little puppy for liking that sort of thing. :p
The Fatal Frame games were good as well, but you can't really compare them to Silent Hill. Fatal Frame goes for the scares with ghosts and junk while Silent Hill is just a disturbing atmosphere with even more disturbing images.
Both are great in their own respect though. Really like both series of games.

The first time I encountered a facehugger in AvP1 I lost all hope, so I looked away from my monitor and just let it get me.

Yes, I DO know damned well what you speak about. Every game has its 'One Scariest Scene'. In Silent Hill 3 it was the scene in the washroom of the hospital. In Resident Evil 4(an otherwise not-scary game) it was the scene with the Garrador in the Prison. In Kuon it was the scene where the little girl begins to eat her Daddy. In Resident Evil it was the scene with the dogs jumping through the window. And Eternal Darkness had...the bathtub scene. That came out of NOWHERE.
Also, Eternal Darkness was a different kind of scary altogether. Silent Hill Kuon uses truly disturbing(yet subtle) imagery to get inside your head. Resident Evil uses jump-out-and-go-BOO! tactics to scare you. Fatal Frame preys on your sense of security, leaving you feeling truly unsafe as you played it. And Eternal Darkness is scary in the way that it truly makes you feel like you're going insane at times.

Awesome summarization. I agree completely.
Ha ha, that bathtub scene nearly stopped my damn heart I think. It was so amazing how you see what is in the tub for a few brief, silent screens before there is the close up and the sound again... The brain doesn't process what the hell it is seeing fast enough and then it all hits like a bag of bricks. There better be another Eternal Darkness...
Kuon? Girl eating dad? What the hell is this?

Kuon was the japanese-est of the japanese-themed games. It takes place in Heian Era Japan, and you need to read subtitles. Unlike most games set in Japan, the characters actually LOOK Japanese(SHOCK). The graphics are gorgeous(the best cloth movement I've ever seen), but a tad simplistic(no mouth movementWTF?). However, it did have some obscenely scary moments, my favorite of which is when Utsuki eats her Dad.
Yes, near the very end of the game, she begins to chow down on dear old Daddy. I can't explain why(as it would give away the ending), but oh BOY was it a funny scene. She's all 'YUM YUM!' and the girl with her is like 'WTF?'

... what? I have never heard of this game. Now I'm extremely curious.
Cannibalism on a family member? Freaking crazy.

Oh God yes, Eternal Darkness.
Oh crap, here's another one! powder first, then wadding, then the ball, pull the hammer back an-*BOOM*
God, the insanity effects were awesome. The screen's tilting, but it looks straight, but it's tilted!

You'll have a hell of a time finding it. It's almost nonexistant, and despite that shining moment of brilliance, it tried to mix Survival Horror and RPG was rather mediocre. For a good Survival Horror/RPG go for Parasite Eve, or the lesser known(yet much better) Koudelka.

Never played Koudelka, but I have played Parasite Eve. For some reason that game made me shiver... I especially remember being weirded out when you have to fight the mutated dog. But then I got sad when I defeated it. :(

I highly suggest Koudelka. It had ingenious monster design, and a narrative that I haven't seen matched since. It also had a bitchy female video game character. That's rare in itself.

Eternal Darkness... o.o But somehow that name fits the bill pretty well.
It would be great if there was a sequel. I had a lot of fun with that game.

I've heard of this infamous bathroom scene before but never seen it for myself. Anyone have a pic or movie?
As for my favorite, it would have to be Silent Hill 2. The part where you are walking down the corridor and you can hear a deep voice speaking in (latin)? and hear the footsteps. Also where you here a little girl crying and bloody footsteps materialize leading to a wall.
