Wouldn't it be nice to get together, meet some people and eat something delicious ?

Please leave a note here if you would be interested in some kind of a gaijin congregation and we'll take it from there.

I totally call dibs on not organizing. Or if I do organize, we will eat something that has an up-front cost and no bill-fiddling. You pay up front, and you consume what you pay for. I will go so far as to organizing a drinking table and non-drinking table, and the non-drinking table can wallow in self-pity and silliness while I get smashed.

Errrr, brazilian barbeque anyone? Cheap, easy, indeed!

NOT August. Please. Anytime BUT August. Anything south of Sendai in August is unthinkable (for actually voluntarily going there). I watched the weather channel last summer and always saw Osaka/Kyoto before Tokyo came up. You guys were consistently 4-5 degrees C higher than Tokyo (it was hot enough in Tokyo, thank you very much). We'd be at 32 (plenty hot enough) you'd be at 37 (starting to be very painful). I don't know about Kobe but I'm doubting it's any better.

Kansai, suckier weather than Kanto. (I think Kobe is in Kansai, too lazy to check- Oh, yeah just looked at the map on the wall, right next to Osaka-it's Kansai, therefore the weather sucks).

Yeah Brazil, whatever. As long as the meat products are identifiable and not pieces of intestine and such. I think I did Brazilian once in the States and it was fine.

Last time we just did a nomihodai set course for 3500 yen each. No fuss, no muss, no dividing up the bill in strange ways.

And Sundays. Sundays. If I'm going all the way down there, it has to be a Sunday. Please? Unless I'm off at some point during the week. I hate being off. No paycheck for hours not worked.

We could do January again!

Y'all should come up here to Aomori in August, instead of the hot places. :innocent:

Comfortable average of 29 C up here, and lots of fresh food during harvest season. Not to mention Nebuta (http://www.nebuta.or.jp/english/index_e.htm) (though I actually prefer Tachineputa (http://www.tachineputa.jp/index.php)^_^).

September is fine by me. The Brazilian is all clearly labeled meat, plus some non-meat products in the buffet. It's 3500 for a nomihodai (90 minutes) plus a tabehodai, and they come around with the meat on sticks for you, or you can holler for something special.

It's in Kobe Harborland, which is right on the ocean (obviously), and it's a LOT cooler in Kobe than it is in Osaka, or especially Kyoto.

Beer is awesome anyway in hot weather. You brave the weather by getting shitfaced drunk. At least I do.

I think I've been to that place. They also serve some pretty good side dishes, salad and pasta (which is included in the 'all you can eat').

I could show up for a September date too.

I'm all in for it... i'll be around nagoya but for something this epic i'll take measures to get to wherever we are supposed to go...

I also vouch for PLF's idea... in the drinking table too... I don't mind the hot weather..

September is best for me too...

Oh, you fuckers and your Kansai! I don't have 40,000 to blow on shinkansen tickets :( I'll go anytime, provided that there is nomi hodai. Actually... does Kobe have like, an airport or Shinkansen stops? I heard Kansai was hot and never bothered to learn anything about it.

Pierrot le Fou
07-18-2007, 11:20 PM
Yes, Kobe does have an airport, and a shinkansen stop. And Kansai kicks the shit out of Kanto. Hands down.

Carve my name down on the drinking table. I'll even risk my body and sit next to the guy holding arsenic. :D

I hope that place has just a nomihodai tab 'cuz last time I went there with friends all of us somehow got full after just a few slabs of meat (and not the complete kind of full, but the "they must inject something in the food so people eat less and feel full faster" kind).

This thing isn't 'till September so I'll check back on it. I have to try to get into the country first. :) I'll try to be around at the time, then.

Pierrot le Fou
07-19-2007, 03:20 AM
No, it's only tabehodai/nomihodai. No choice! You can save 500 yen by getting a soft drink nomihodai, but that's 'bout it.

Is it legal to get on a plane while drunk in Japan? Also, is this an all night place or will I have to find a park bench/English chaser for the night?

If you can do the last option, why would you even consider the first two?

Pierrot le Fou
07-19-2007, 08:03 AM
Of course it's legal to get on a plane drunk. And Kobe is a little light on all-night things, but I s'pose you could always head to Osaka to go clubbing and playing VD roulette with a Japanese girl whose legs open to the magic words of "What do you like music?"

I mean, not that you can't do that in Kobe, it's just that it's not as 'all-night' as Osaka and so you may be stuck drinking 'til dawn if you don't pull. Heaven forbid.

There is a spaworld or somesuch that you can zonk out in, and they will happily wake up you up at 7am.

Just stay at some business hotel for 6000-7000 yen. We (mawande and I) stayed at a nice one near Osaka station for 7000 yen. I know, you're a student and so money is not overabundant...you can go by bus to Osaka and, I'm guessing, Kobe for cheap. If you go unreserved seats on the Shinkansen you can also save a bundle. There's also this strange 3-day pass with unlimited train travel for something like 10,000 or 15,000 yen (can be a resident of Japan and still use it). The catch is, no Shinkansen so you take a whole boatload of crap local trains. Still, it's a great time to catch up on studying if you've started school.

Pierrot le Fou
07-20-2007, 12:29 AM
It takes about 10 hours on those trains to get down to Kobe. And it's a major chore. 7 transfers for the best connection. You can take a night bus, or you could take an airplane, and it'd probably be comparable.

It's 14,000 yen one-way for the shinkansen (unreserved).

It's probably 8,000 yen one-way for the night bus.

It's 10,500 to fly from Haneda to Kobe one-way.

You can probably find discount fares or packages somewhere if you look.

Well I am good at it... I'm still here aren't I? Sometimes I fear how 'terrible' Japanese guys are, because I'm not so great myself and everyone seems to deal >> Only problem is, I can only halfway understand Kansai-ben, so they might confuse the piss out of me with a form of Engrish that I'm not accustomed to!!

I think I'm going to either take the plane or bust out my expired JR pass lol ;)

How about... from Nagoya to Kobe?

Pierrot le Fou
07-20-2007, 02:03 AM
4000 yen on the train (you can get the 青春18切符 - good for 5 days, not consecutively necessarily, travel as much as you want, but you'd have to pay extra for limited express or shinkansen or the like if you use them).

It's not THAT bad of a trip actually (I did it last summer). You have to hop on a special express from Nagoya, then you swap to a local for a little bit, hop on another special express for about 2/2.5 hours, and you're in Kobe. Much better than Tokyo. 3 transfers, 3.5 hours says the website.

A bus would probably be pretty cheap, but not cheaper than if you use the aforementioned seishun 18 kippu. It may be worth it for not having to worry about transfers if you're poor at that sort of thing.

Pierrot le Fou

It's really not that bad. Just be sure to get a seat from Maibara (in Shiga prefecture) because you'll be on that train 'til the cows come home (to roost in Kobe)

Kobe smells.

This was supposed to be about kyoto ;D

Anyway, I had planned to have a meeting before the 10th of next month.

Anyone up for smt ?

Kyoto before the 10th? Good luck.

Assó.

10th of august aye.

What I've gathered is that there're quite a few on these boards who live in kyoto, no ?

Errrr, Az lives in Kyoto. I used to live in Kyoto. Mushu used to (still?) lives in Kyoto, but was going home soon from my understanding. Mittens used to be in Kyoto, but he's left. I don't think anyone but Az is currently in Kyoto. Most people are in Kanto, some are in Nagoya, and a few are in Kansai, but not so many.

erbiumfiber
07-24-2007, 07:58 AM
Yeah, you (OP) might notice we Kanto types are getting together on a regular basis- AS WELL as being flexible enough to travel to Kansai.

Pierrot le Fou
07-24-2007, 08:17 AM
Let us also establish that the Kanto crew is a motley mix of young and old, student and parent, hub of oddness, while the Kansai crew (read: me and Az) are perfectly capable of fending on our own without you.

(though sometimes Az does cry at night, sobbing into his pillow, "why don't they love me? why won't they come to Kansai? Is it because I touch myself at night?")

Actually, I think it's because neither of us is too big on planning.

I would have preferred one of the three-day weekends since I'm coming down from Tokyo but can make any day...

Dirty rotten lie. Film exposed to my ugly mug disintegrates, or leaps out of the case in hopes of a quick end.

Digital cameras have been known to solder the memory card circuit board together out of sheer fear/spite.

So you have no photos.

As far as September is concerned, cutting out the 2 3-day weekends does put a damper on things. I mean, we can do it without Az (you read his stories -- do you really need to hear him speak live too?), but something tells me folks think he's important. As if he established this site or something.

I'll make a new thread with dates.
