The Quakenet room has 2 others in it, and one is a bot. Let's merge into Blitzed...

Quakenet has horrific services. Blitzed is a much better server regardless.

Bobbybirdtree
08-14-2005, 12:30 AM
There is your problem. It's not a site lol. You have to get an IRC client(download) and go to that server.

Firefly
08-14-2005, 12:32 AM
Does it cost money?

Bobbybirdtree
08-14-2005, 12:33 AM
No it is completely free. Some of them will ask for donations though.

Firefly
08-14-2005, 12:35 AM
where do I download it? i can only find mIRC and it there is like way too many versions

Spy
08-14-2005, 12:36 AM
Hmm.. so far I've been using Trillian for it and that's working fine... umm... mIRC should run it perfectly fine also

Bobbybirdtree
08-14-2005, 12:37 AM
Get mirc. All those ones are the same thing just downloading from different locations.

Firefly
08-14-2005, 12:41 AM

Wrong server. Go to connect and select the blitz server. Citizen is gonna make a direct link soon too so that should help some of the others.

I am in the middle of setting up an IRC server/network exclusively for the use of OP9 and its members. I am working toward something that can be trusted as the official chat.

For now you poor souls lost in Windows-land and non-free software can download this client from my server. It's free and should do at least everything you'd need from an IRC client.

Well, as soon as I can figure out why I am klined on that server, I will connect. Its funny, I've never been on that network before, and my IP is a commercial static IP, so it would be weird if it was klined because of someone else before.

silentplummet
08-14-2005, 05:02 AM
Are you certain it's specific to your IP? Perhaps you are banned on the basis of host/mask or even simply because you are part of a bad netblock. Admins have been known to do this.

Its not the nick, i'm being killed because of my hostmask or ident, which are different from your nick. I'm trying to figure out if i can change that info.

The saying thing is a command anyone can do. I dunno about the name thing. Try using something like Panda1234 or something.

Anyway irc.ephemereal.com is up for whoever wants to use it. I'll talk to the forum moderators and maybe Az about making this official, and making some of you guys IRCops.

Anyone with a server wanting to join the network is also welcome.

If you manage to break my server that's fine, just PM me or post to this forum.

To change your ident in mIRC:

Type Alt+O to access options
Expand the "Connect" group
Select "Identd" from the expanded list
Check the box that says "Use ID from email address"
Click on "Connect" (don't expand or contract it, just click the word itself)
Change your listed e-mail address to something else (doesn't have to be a real e-mail address in that setting, either)

That will let you in.

Okay, in the spirit of losers like me who've never used mIRC and as such have no knowledge of how to operate it - how do you operate it?

silentplummet
08-14-2005, 01:57 PM
The best way to operate mIRC is to pick it up and put it in the trash receptacle of your preference.

Get xchat or something similar. I don't really know what is or isn't available for windows these days but on the previous page I linked to a great client that does everything.

how do i create a irc chat using trillian?

Bobbybirdtree
08-15-2005, 11:46 PM
Put irc.blitzed.org::6667 into the message box that asks for server then go to change. There will be a little box here you need to tick that allows you to type into a big rectangle. Put /join #op9 into there and right when you connect it will take you to the outpost 9 channel.

zell583
08-15-2005, 11:58 PM
it doesn't work. it isn't letting me on. what am i doing wrong? (other than the fact i have never used irc before)
*edit* ok here is the error message i got

For all the shit I got about chatzy, it seems like IRC is just a tad bit too much of a pain in the ass for almost everyone. IRC is a pain in the arse. One click webchat is the wave of the future. It's brainless, it's simple, and anyone can do it without any struggle whatsoever. Furthermore, it is cross-platform, so nobody has to search for a linux IRC client, or a mac one, and can just use plain ol' browsers regardless of the OS.

Marblehead

I don't see why mirc so hard for people. It's no more complicated than programming your vcr.

Bliss
08-16-2005, 04:13 AM
Ok, which chat are we using and how many are there?

silentplummet

Someone started an #op9 on blitzed.net and I guess everyone's there.

Pierrot le Fou
08-16-2005, 04:23 AM
I am in chatzy, alone. I have no idea about IRC.

There is nothing hard about IRC if you are a nerd with no life who's been using it since he was 13. If you're new to the net in the sense that you use a browser and outlook, and that's 'bout it, then IRC is hard as Hell and confusing.

Unless you set up a web interface for IRC that everyone can use, that will direct everyone to the right server and channel, then there is no point in trying, as you will never be able to top simple web-based chat for ease of use.

When I go to that blitzed site, nothing is really there except this Apache thing. Is there something I have to download?

silentplummet
08-16-2005, 04:26 AM
You can download an IRC client from my website.

http://www.ephemereal.com/xchat-2.0.9.exe

I am also running an IRC server but I don't know if anyone's going to use it. I forgot to mention one important benefit in doing so in the thread I made asking for it to become the official OP9 chat.

Pierrot, IM me on AIM/yahoo/MSN as silentplummet(@hotmail.com for MSN) or something and I'll give you a tutorial on IRC.

you need a IRC program to get into the chat. I use trillian myself.

silentplummet
08-16-2005, 04:29 AM
I don't know how well trillian works but if it's anything like the IRC support in gaim (a trillian-like program for linux and windows) I'd avoid it personally and use a dedicated client like xchat, bitchX or mIRC if I wanted to pay $20 for the right to use a stupid IRC client.

CorSec
08-16-2005, 04:38 AM
If you have mozilla, as in the full suite, then you have an IRC client, which is ChatZilla.

It isn't very pretty, but it is right there if you use mozilla.

I've been using IRC since about 1995 or so (give or take). I know how to use it. However, I am at work, and I only have a mac at home (which doesn't have a handy client that's free and dandy like mIRC) which makes me dislike the prospect of using IRC for chat. Plus the only time I have to chat is during work, where IRC is not really a possibility (can't download to the PCs here).

Sorry!

Bobbybirdtree
08-16-2005, 06:18 AM
I did make a link for anyone that has trouble operating it on the first page. Just get yourself a client and you're in business. I'm sorry about the mac situation pierrot. There has to be something that you can use for free.

Pierrot le Fou
08-16-2005, 06:19 AM
There are things that I can use for free. I just don't particularly have enough time at home generally, as my girlfriend does not like it when I sit at the computer for hours on end, and therefore I don't generally do it. At work, however, I like to chat but can't do it without a client. And I don't have a client. And I can't download one.

So booooooo IRC.

Bobbybirdtree
08-16-2005, 06:20 AM
Ah the power of google. :p Mac IRC client (http://www.snak.com/)

edit:Well damn that sucks.

Pierrot le Fou
08-16-2005, 06:32 AM
And it is shareware, which after 30 days cuts chat off after 30 minutes.

I know because it's what I have on my home PC.
