I want black hair, or at least dark. Maybe I'm sick of being a dark blonde in Japan, and maybe I just want change for once~
Would it come out totally horrible if I used the stuff you can just buy at the store? I think the dark blonde- black will be hard to make it look good.
But it's an arm and a leg if I want to go to a professional.

Well, as far as doing this from a box or at a salon, I always pick a salon. First of all, they know what they're doing. And sure, the box looks simple enough, but your hair will not look like the color from the picture - it all depends what your hair color is going into it. Also, Japanese salons are awesome - they're borederline spas with the treatments you receive.
But are you sure you want to go from blonde to dark brown or even black? If you're going to dye your hair darker at all, avoid the black unless you want to look goth. If your complexion is too light, you'll end up getting the "I just spent the last 20 years living in a box" look.
Also, are you going to dye your eyebrows? If your hair is nautrally blonde, chances are your eyebrows are going to look really weird if your hair color is darker than they are. Rule of thumb with eyebrows is they should be just a little bit lighter than the darkest shade of your hair. I mean, you could just use an eyebrow pencil everyday, but...
Also, if you're doing it because you don't want to stick out as much, don't even bother. It won't work (trust me, I tried!)

I have darker eyebrows then the stuff on my head.
I want to look semi-emo. I guess.

If that's the look you're going for than do it :) But if your hair is black, your eyebrows are still going to look weird no matter how dark they seem now.
Another thing too about doing it yourself - do you live by yourself in Japan, or with a host family? Because hair dye can easily stain, even your sinks and tubs if you're not careful - especially black.

Go black/dark brown. Just not permanent.
Never permanent.
STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM PERMANENT.
The 5 wash stuff is dirt cheap and will give you a fair idea of what you'll look like, without the nightmares of regrowth.

Trying to go from blonde to black is a million times easier than black to blonde. I had bright orange Ronald McDonald hair for a summer.
FYI...

I was a light blonde and got it dyed black. But professionally just recently. Doooo ittttt. ( highly recommend seeing a professional about doing it dark if you're a blonde).
Make sure to buy a really good type of conditioner and shampoo, and a moisturizer for your hair too. None of that cheap kind. Dying will kill your hair :].

:DDDDDD The benefit of how short I keep my hair. I dye it one color then three weeks later its back to normal. I've had every color hair they sell dye for and some they don't. :D

I'm kind of deciding I don't want to dye my hair.
My new hair looks so emo...and that's enough novelty for me. I was going for somewhat ASIAN and I look like I came out of some f'king punk band.

Asian hairstyles just don't really work on caucasian hair. Their hair is much thicker (I mean the strands of hair) than most white people's, so we end up looking kind of weird trying to duplicate them. I have a friend who tried to get a Japanese punk-styled haircut and now she just has a mullet.

My friends are coercing me to dye my hair.
I bet they dyed their hair , now they look like a bunch of idiots(to people like me... come on, whoever heard of young men doing that to their hair), and now they want *you* to look like one too ..
Shave your head. It's most practical, and it's very pleasant (heat regulation-wise)..

I don't mean to sound big headed, but I have perfected giving white people Japanese style hair cuts. It's hard and requires a lot of work, but I can do it.
I'm so good at it, it scares me.

Probably because you not only talent with hair, but you've spent a significant amount of time in Japan as a caucasian. When you ask your average Japanese hairdresser for a cut and style, they don't really know how to deal with caucasian hair. And if you give a picture of a Japanese hairstyle to a hairdresser in the U.S., you'll end up with a mullet. :meh:

^I dunno, I was looking through a Japanese hair magazine that had some styles organized by hair type and found a (1, one, singular) style recommended for long, straight, fine hair. It looked great when she did it; it's entirely my fault I'm too lazy to maintain such a style.
Knife-Fingered Sue Sanderson

You don't know what? Sure, there are some Japanese girls with fine hair, too. But that just proves my point that most styles won't look as good on caucasian hair if you just bring in a picture of your favorite Japanese hair cut to your local salon and let them start chopping. You'd have to find an experienced hair dresser or a special style for your type of hair.

I always see people's hair and say "AHHH your hair would be perfect if you just did this" and they're always thankful. I hope we meet someday. I will give you glory.

What is the difference between japanese hair and white?
4letterwords
07-07-2007, 07:07 AM
Japanese hair is coarse and theres a lot and usually has no part nor cowlick, and caucasian hair usually has a definite part, is usually thin (as most caucasian girls with thick hair, don't actually have thick hair, just a lot of thin hair) and have a small wave, as well as much softer. Soft hair is very difficult to style, as it has nothing to keep it in the style.
so their hair is more like a thinner virson of black hair?

No. It's slicker than black hair, but at the same time coarse. It's very very thick though.

I forgot to specify I was in Japan at the time, and my style came out like the magazine picture. Of course, the salon was so close to the university they might have had experience with white exchange students before me.
