The Japan Sumo Association currently bans active wrestlers from driving. Yokozuna Asashoryu, who serves as chairman of the sumo wrestlers' organization, said, "We just talked about the issue. Some sumo wrestlers are married and have children (who need to be driven around)."

The wrestlers' organization plans to discuss the possibility of asking the sumo association for permission to drive. (Mainichi)

Sorry for my ignorance on this subject, but i'd like to inquire as to why they aren't allowed to drive? Are they too big for many cars or what?

Did you think about it at all!? If they were too big, why would they be asking to drive!?

They are too valuable. Should they be injured in a car accident, they would cost a lot of people a lot of money.

edit: Being banned from driving is OD though. All pro athletes have some restrictions on extreme activities, but driving!? Damn.

that's an unusual request. I never didn't think they weren't able to drive...since they're well....fat, how could they manage to get into the car anyway? and get off of it?

I saw a documentary once, where the only vehicle they used was the bycicle...and it was like pretty amusing/impressive watching these fat dudes taking a ride on it.

Yes... I did think about it. :P Logic was if they are too big they would require much larger cars which the roads might not compensate for. Having never been to japan I don't know how common SUVs and such larger cars are. I can see the too valuable thing though that is a bit too extreme.

I make most Sumo wrestlers look tiny. And I drive a car.

I could be wrong but some of it may be because it looks too modern (driving, that is). I mean, they wear their hair in a style hundreds of years old, dress to match so driving would look...well, strange.

No other sport is quite as into tradition as sumo...

Sumo wrestlers are great father figures when it come to saying in shape and maintaining a health diet.
