View Full Version : Who is the greatest Marvel Superhero?

Decade

I been wanting to buy Marvel Ultimate Alliance lately, but its got me thinking about this.

Just like DC has Superman to be the hero of all heros, who do you consider to be the greatest, hero of heros in the Marvel universe (we're talking Marvel Universe-616, the main universe here)?

Spider-Man
Captain America
Wolverine
Iron Man
Captain Marvel
Mr. Fantastic
Silver Surfer
Hulk
Other

Recently, I read in the newspaper (and it kinda saddens me this made national frontpage news) that Captain America died as a result of the latest marvel event, Civil War.

I havent read comics in a few years, but when it makes national news that a comic book hero dies, that CAPTAIN AMERICA died, thats pretty impressive to show how big he is and how much of a staple he is for the states.

However, NOT because of the new movie being out, but I've always thought of Spider-man as being the biggest, main-spotlight hero of Marvel. He's just the shit, he has the coolest villians, the greatest lines, the coolest powers and costumes (I saw a recent costume of his called the "Iron Spidey" costume that I thought was CRAZY cool, and now I see hes back to the black symbiote costume. SWEET!), the greatest supporting characters, reasons, and just about everything else about him going for him.

Regardless of what the movies showed us, they make him very relatable and show potential in everyone as his greatest weapon was one he made: His web shooters, showing that his smarts and cunning are his greatest assets and ability about him.

The movies also help to show how he really is just the average good guy trying to do the right thing always but suffering for it in his everyday life (honestly, my heart breaks when I see the commercial for movie 3 and you see him losing his Aunt May's engagement ring he wants to give MJ).

For me, regardless of any past I had as a kid as an Xmen fan, Spider-man will always be the greatest hero of the marvel universe.

Captain America is great for national pride and all, but Spider-man is by far the greatest marvel superhero there is, hands down.

Captain America>>>>>>>>>>>>>Spider-man, this is man is/was highly respected in the Marvel Universe and Spider-man absolutely idolizes him.

Cap demanded and received respect.

TRUE

Between Spider-man 3 (which I STILL havent seen yet :gloomy: ), Captain America's death in the paper, and seeing a bunch of Marvel Video game commercials lately (I wanna buy Marvel ultimate alliance for the 360!! >_<), I decided to start "reading" these comics again (wink wink, torrent reference) and started with the Civil War which has caught all the buzz lately, and its ASTOUNDED me (literally, it's amazing how much a comic book can absolutely mystify a full grown adult male. I'm honestly worried about reading more and getting hooked on reading them again)

In it, I saw at least ONE fight directly between Spider-man and Cap, and it was more than obvious it tore Spidey up to do it. You're right, he idolized Cap and respected him, even as his enemy.

But IMO, the greatest heros look at others for inspiration.

(psst, you forgot to vote for Cap as your pick, btw ^^!)

Spider-Man by a wide margin.

Buy MUA. I'm playing through again (slowly) on Hard. It's still fun. =D

I used Human Torch, Spiderman, Wolverine, and Invisible Woman first time around.

I replaced Wolverine with Daredevil, and currently, I've taken out Johnny Storm and am trying to level Dr. Strange. His assortment of powers is quite good.

As far as influence, I'd have to go with Captain America. He's just had so much influence in the universe over the past 40-60 years. Spiderman is probably one of my favourite characters, but he's rarely played as large a leadership role as Cap. Professor X would be closer in the running if he was an active participant as opposed to being the leader of the X-Men, and the X-Men going out and doing things. Too bad for his lack of leg movement =\

I don't want to go into the rest, but I think they have certain flaws that in my mind, prevent them from being a good 'greatest'.

Captain America. His involvement with the Avengers and his popularity alone are enough to make him the grandaddy of Marvel 616. Spiderman is more of a "top ten" character. I'd also put Iron Man above him.

However, in terms of my own personal preference:

Antman > Everyone else

Best villain: Doctor Doom. Anyone who says Magneto gets banned. =0

Unrelated postscript: Superman is a hack. D:

Magneto is better than Dr. Doom because he's more sympathetic.

Dr. Doom: "Wah Wah I'm ugly"

Magneto: "IM A FREAKIN HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR!"

In terms of raw power I'd say Jean Grey or her "son" Nate Grey. But that's not the question.

Overall I'd go with Magneto. He's a great super villian who overtime has become an anti-hero instead. He is the leader of the X-men in the Age of Apocalypse timeline and he is one of a few people who actually is able to kill Apocalypse. He is arguebly the most powerful mutant ever to live, even more than Xavier. He's a badass.

Except for the fact that she has died 3 times and each time they brought her back each excuse became lamer and lamer.

Objectively, it's obviously The Cap; his tales of heroism and bravado would reach even the tiniest of hamlets where I grew up thatching roofs and milking cows.
But I relate so very much to Wolverine and Magneto. So it's a toss-up between them.

Hulk isn't actually that powerful in the Marvel universe. >_>

Most characters with genius-level intellect, magic, advanced technology and other various abilities can handle him. And that's just on Earth. A character like Silver Surfer would thrash him. And Silver Surfer himself is nothing compared to characters like Galactus, the Celestials, the Living Tribunal, etc.

Actually that isn't true...and the Silver Surfer would have trouble wtih Hulk as well. Galactus is a fundamental part of the universe, the Celestials are like gods (but Thor has fought with them), and the Living Tribunal is the most powerful force in the entire Marvel Multiverse these are not everyday Marvel beings. Any of the everyday marvel characters ( pretty much everyone else) fear having to deal with Hulk.

Just take a look at World War Hulk which is about to begin and he's back from being shot in space and he's pissed and it's not going to be pretty...I await his battle with the Sentry who can give the Surfer a run for his money.

It's all a matter of just how pissed off Hulk is and currently...he just may be more angry than he's ever been in his life and he's not mindless and savage either.

The smart vote would be Hulk though because there really isn't anybody that can stand up to him other than Juggernaut.

Juggernaut has been greatly depowered and is a mere shell of his former self

Actually Marvel is doing a continuity called World War Hulk where the Hulk is coming back to Earth...pissed. He's apparently coming back to smash the Illuminati after what they did to him and he is freaking POWERFUL and angry in this one.

For those who don't know the Illuminati are a group of superheros banded together as represenatives for subgroups of heros:

Namor is a ruler of the oceans and represents the anti-hero mindset.

Tony Stark represents a certain type of hero — the Avenger type of hero, one who understands and appreciates that heroes can work with the government, rather than outside of it.

Reed Richards represents the science-based part of the superhero community.

Blackagar Boltagon represents the Inhumans, who are an important part of Marvel history and play an important part in events to come. He also represents a ruler/king archtype, one that has also been filled by Namor.

Dr. Stephen Strange speaks for the mystical/non-scientific side of the Marvel universe.

Prof. Charles Xavier is there on behalf of the mutant community

Am I the only one who thinks that Tony Stark is a total douche?

He's borderline villian at this point.

His idea has been always that superheros should work with the government rather than outside of it. They can supposedly help more people that way.

However in the course of events during the Civil War series Tony Stark became a real douche. He gives Spider-Man this new iron suit however he put an override in it in case Spider-Man ever swich sides (which he happens to do). Then takes creates a kind of Spider Sense because of this.

Also, he hold anti-registration superheros in the Negative Zone until they are willing to register. He stated that they are not on US soil so they are not subject to the rights under the US constitution. So they really mess with them in there.

I love it that Captain America beat the snot out of Iron Man, but it was sad that he gave up after he saw the collateral damage.

well technically going back to the hulk thing, most omega's can deal with him (look at franklin richards and nate grey), so while he can get mighty pissed, there are several people who are capable of stopping him. The thing about Marvel is that the Universe in it is very much a Political one, whereas the DC Universe is more along the lines of Ethics. While tehre are several Superman-type and God-type levels, they are kept in check by either a neutral power or a body of uberpowerful codgers.

The Civil War, oh man I was so pissed at that fucking drunk for making Parker fight Cap, and getting him to unmask his ass.

Forgive me, but are we talking about overall greatness, which include intelligence, deeds, strengths, leadership, etc., against odds greatness (how well they succeed to become great despite the odds, whether in the stories themselves or in the character development / fan appreciation aspect), sheer awesomeness greatness (they do one or two things that just totally blow the mind), or something else?

I agree for the most part about Captain America. Admittedly, I haven't read comics in years nor do I know much about him except what I've gotten via X-Men and Spider-man, but I think he has the utter coolness and greatness embodiement that, say, Superman has, but also has something that Superman never will-- humanity, humility, a realness to him. They both came out as great American heroes to fight against the Nazis, but DC really dropped the ball when it came to Superman. So I'll say that Captain America really is (and yes, is, despite his death) numero uno in greatness as a superhero (and not just a Marvel superhero.)

That being said, with him now gone, I think Spider-man can really step up and become the Captain America from now on. Will he be as great as him or surpass him, well, that's a matter for debate, but I think he's a worthy heir to the title of "greatest superhero."

And the thing that I really like about Spider-man is that really, even with all his adventures and all the things he's seen and done, he's still just a guy. That was one of the things about Captain America, too. Super-soldier or not, he really was still just a simple guy at heart. I think that's what made both him and now Spider-man as relatable as they are.

And now I shall back out and let you fanboys retake the floor.

CrazyAce86
05-11-2007, 03:17 AM
Okay, okay, I'm breaking in again, just for an honorable mention.

Batman may not be the overall greatest, but I think he's really great just because he doesn't have any "super" abilities or anything beyond a normal, intelligent man (albeit a wealthy one.) That was always really cool in my book.

Oh, and since we have a greatest superhero thread, how about a greatest supervillian thread? And not just Marvel, either, because you can't really mention supervillians without mentioning the Joker. Greatest or not, he's definitely worth mentioning. I mean, c'mon, he made AFI's 100 Years... 100 Greatest Heroes and Villians list.

Although... His coolness may be destroyed by the fact that Heath Ledger of all people is playing him next. WTF? Heath Ledger? I like the guy, I do, but as the Joker?

Anyhow, it's all your floor now, boys. For real this time.

To me though, even with the Civil War and Cap leading, it feels as though Cap WAS a great leader (he still is, dont get me wrong. He may very well STILL be the best), but Spidey just seems like hes the new one, destined to be the greatest hero of Marvel.

I mean, there are just too many ultra-powerful villains (on the Marvel side alone, really). I mean, even if you barred the ultra powerful bad guys like Galactus and IG Thanos, you still have a lot of competition in the more "normal" characters like Magneto and Dr. Doom.

necrofucked this to ask a Spiderman question:

Is the symbiote bonded to Peter Parker or his suit in the comic? I had an argument with a buddy today and I said the symbiote is bonded to Peter himself and he puts it on the same way venom does (Im basing this off what I remembered in the 90s Spiderman cartoon).

He says its a la movie style, where its only bonded to his suit and it affects his personality when he puts it on.

whose right?

And btw, as badass as Magneto is, Galactus is possibly the most powerful villian in marvel.

Magneto's the SHIT though.

Galactus isn't a villian! He's a cosmic being that is the balance between life and death. Who needs to eat planets to survive.

Anyway you are right. In the comics suit can become any type of clothing that Peter can think of. As such he's always wearing it, and is constantly feeling it's influence. The only way for it to get his powers was to have bonded to his very DNA.

There are ultra-powerful villains, ultra-powerful heroes and ultra-powerful neutral characters. It evens out. Not to mention the fact that pretty much anyone can take on anyone else in the Marvel universe. Deadpool beat Galactus and Squirrel Girl beat Thanos. =/

Also, Dr. Doom and Magneto are both pretty powerful. Doom is a genius on par with Reed Richards and Bruce Banner. His suit is on par with, if not stronger than Iron Man's normal suit. He has the ability to switch bodies with people, as well as a mastery over magic that puts him next in line behind Dr. Strange as "Sorceror Supreme". Having diplomatic immunity and an army is fun too. And Magneto, of course, has been shown doing all sorts of insane shit with his powers over the years. He's also a genius, as well.

Genius characters in Marvel tend to be allowed to accomplish anything.
