This is a thread for all us oldtimers to discuss the anime of out youths.
This thread is dedicated to all those classic shows and movies that todays fandom spits on every chance they get.
I recently picked up The first volumes of Aura Battler Dunbine and Saint Seiya, I really enjoyed both series so far.
Dunbine was the first series to mix Fantasy elements with the Sci Fi War drama, its quite interesting. The mecha designs are very insectoid-like, I have never seen designs quite like them before. The story is really good too, I can't wait to get the next volume
Saint Seiya surprised me, I hadn't expected it to be that good. some great action so far, and some excellent drama too. I like how its progress so far so I'll definately pick up volume 2.
Anyone see these 2 shows, or possibly have any classic recomendations?

I grew up watching the classic yet butchered together Robotech. I wish I could afford the remastered original Macross because even though I own the first arc of Robotech, I will never venture past the Macross saga. Boo Southern Cross and your wanna be Jenius child. Though if I saw the orginal Southern Cross and Mospeda, would the be any better?
Other than that I wish I could find dvd sets of the original, uncut Voltron and Voltes V. I dunno if they even came out. Oh and old school Danguard Ace rocked when I was 5.

Lupin III is a must see. (even though it is a huge franchise) It is the inspiration for many modern anime and it is one of the best classics out there.
Ranma 1/2 is also a pretty good fairly old anime. If you like your anime with action, harem, comedy, and general silliness mixed together, this one's for you.

The original Bubblegum Crisis ruled pretty damn hard.

I haven't picked up Southern Cross yet, but I read that it is rather good on its own, just abit slow in the begining. Unfortunately, due to its time slot it didn't do very well and was cancel alittle more than half way, so the ending is sort of a rush job. But I've been told that had it reached its full run, it would be much better remembered.
Mospeada I thought was good in the Robotech block, I want to get the uncut series so I can see it in its full glory. Since Robotech changed its story around alot too, I think it also gets a bad rep from some people.
Voltron was a combination of two series, Go Lion and Dairugger XV, and I too would like to see these in their full uncut glory, but it doesn't seem likely that they will ever be released in that fashion.
Voltes V is one of the few Super robot shows from that era that I haven't seen, I'll have to see what I can find of it online.
Danguard Ace was awesome, Leiji Matsumoto's only super robot series, and as we all know, anything he does is golden ;)
Yes, Lupin has quickly become a favorite of mine, great charactor, and a very fun series.
Ranma is a fun series, though less so to me now that I have seen Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura, it doesn't make Ranma any less of a classic though :)
EDIT: Yes! The Original BGC was excellent. You may not believe this, but I just read a review of that series where all the reviewer could focus on was that it was old 80s style animation that "looked Horrible". That and the missed the whole point of the series. ugh!

The orginal ASTRO BOY!
Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Getter Robo, Giant Robo, Char's Counterattack, Gundam 0080, Gundam 0083.

Ah, more of my favorites, Mazinger Z was pretty cool, I haven't seen Great Mazinger (Or maybe I did and I just don't remember clearly).
Getter Robo was another great classic I remember watching as a child, I loved the idea if three units combining into three different robots.
Giant Robo is one I still have to check out, I'll keep my eye out for it in the future.
And the Gundams, oh that series was always the best back in the day. I've seen everything up to Gundam F91, and I haven't been disappointed by any of Tomino's Gundam shows.
Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) is a series I really would like to see in its original language, I don't know why were haven't gotten a subbed release of that yet.
Sailor Moon is not really my bag, but I can see the appeal to it at least. Good recommendation.
Feel free to discuss any of the shows or films mentioned thus far, lets keep this thread moving.

well so far the curent astro boy and the 80's astro boy have been released in complete series box sets. but i don't know if their going to release the orginial astro boy in a complete series box set or not, and they also need to translate all the astro boy movies into english and release them as well.

What the..?! Someone ought to go and find the person who wrote that and kick his head in. The '80s style animation is great, and it was probably written by some 14 year old who worships Inuyasha. Damn kids have got no respect for the classics.

The funny thing was, they didn't get what it was about all.
He said that the whole series was set up to nail Brian J. Mason, and the fucked it up by killing him in the 3rd episode! He doesn't realise that Mason was only a piece of the puzzle, that Genom, not Mason was the Enemy.
Mason's death was Sylia's revenge on the man who killed her father, But Quincy is the top man at Genom, he's the one behind it all. I don't know how that kid could have missed it.
The kid even said everything after episode 3 was pointless! HELLO!?! They were building up to the Largo storyline, and if there hadn't been internal squabbling between the studio and the Creator we would have has 8 more episode to build up to taking down Quincy and Genom.
I know its not common Knowledge that there were actually 8 more episodes planned, but you could tell there was supposed to me more, no one would purposefully end a series on a charactor developement episode.
You know what the strange thing is, After he says he hated the story and the artwork, he said he actually enjoyed it! Whats left if you hate the story and the art? If you like it only for the music, buy the soundtrack, it would be cheaper than buying a DVD boxset
Argh, kids today I tell ya, no respect no respect

Hey, I found a website, by looking up Danguard Ace on MSN, and found a whole bunch of Classic Japanese robots that I knew as the Shogun Warriors.
Dangaurd Ace, Combattler V, Getter Robo G (althought I may have known that one as Starvenger.) All of these were designs used as the Shogun Warriors. You know, I may actually need to find some of these and watchthem to see what the real ones were like. Any suggestions on what would be good to get?

I don't like any of the new Gundams, that is- G Gundam, Gundam W, Gundam X, or Turn A. The only good Gundam anime of the last five years was 08th MS Team, which I recommend.

Yeah, the old stuff was better.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam had some great action scenes, but as I've said before, limping along on action alone if mediocre.
New Mobile Report Gundam W was lame all around. Same goes for Endless Waltz and Gundam SEED. After War Gundam X is one of the few series I have yet to see.
I kind of liked Turn A Gundam though. Dunno why.
The 08th MS Team was pretty good, although I didn't much care for it. I got the story, the significance, and whatnot. It was just somewhat boring. Still better than the stuff that came after it, from what I've seen. Granted that I still haven't seen X, Miller's Report, Green Divers, and MS IGLOO, all of which came after it.
All in all, UC is the way to go. FC was comprised only of G Gundam, which was lame. AC dealt with W and Endless Waltz, also lame. CC is my second favorite, as it deals with Turn A. CE deals with SEED, which is a disgraceful rehashing of the original series. I can't comment on AW, since I've not seen X.
That leaves UC with damn near every good Gundam series. I love how each UC series has its own place, coming together to tell one big story.

how can you not like heavy arms and deathsycthe hell? Those are the coolest guys ever.
Heavy Arms and Deathscythe looks like toys, even more than the usual Gundams. It's a show that focuses on the pretty boys and flashy robots, but trust me, if you know something about robot shows, it's the impossibly macho protagonists/robots! SEED sucks too.
Turn A was better than X/W/G in my opinion, but could've been better.
MS had robots fighting on Earth, thus none of the flashy battles you'd see in space. That alone deserves some points in my book.

I am an OG Robotech fan. I'm old enough to remember Gatchaman, but I never really watched it.
I love a lot of the stuff that came out of the mid-eighties. Captain Harlock, Voltron, and Votoms. Lupin the 3rd is the best. :D

8th Man, and Fist of the North Star.
The OVA titled "8th Man After" released in 1993 was mighty good; but story-wise ran into the mainstream tone of "man or machine".
As for the FotNS ova...it was totally gayified by Gackt, who sang both the beginning and ending themes, as well as voiced the main villain.
/sigh
Citizen
09-17-2005, 06:22 AM
Not a surprise. Anything Gackt-related will increase in suck by at least 60%.
FotNS was still fun for the really cheesy fights though. I enjoyed it.
FotNS reeks of the 70-80's, like the movie Warriors.
Compared to that, recent animes stink, in my opinion. Nothing new, bunch of clichés, shoddy direction, non-existent plot, etc. I did watch the first episode of Gantz, only because the manga is so damn good.

Every now and then something good comes along. Sadly though, much of what becomes HUGE is mindless piss. Stuff like Inuyasha. I sometimes wonder how crap like that manages to win so many fans.
TV anime is hit and miss. Miss more often than hit. Bebop is probably my favorite new/televised anime.

UC Gundam is where its at, You can't beat 0079, 0080, 0083, Zeta, ZZ, CCA, F91(That should have been a series though), and Victory, with shows like that under its belt, the AU shows don't even come close to being anywhere near as good. The only reason Turn A stacks up is because it was the return of Yoshiyuki Tomino to Gundam, the man who started it all.
I would watch G Gundam, only because its a tribute to the classic super robot shows of the 70s, the shows I grew up with, but thats would be the only reason. Wing is trash, simple as that, Trash.
I don't care how neat the designs were in Wing, as much as I like Hajime Katoki's work, These designs were no where near his best. His work on Gundam Sentinel , 0083 & Victory Gundam was much better IMO. Though I have to admit his Wing designs are better that Okawara's SEED designs. Christ ,Okawara needs to retire, or do something original for a change!
About the Classic Super robot shows, Gods I wish they would release those on DVD! Especially Gaiking, he was my Favorite when I was kid, Him and UFO Robot Grendizer.
there are alot of those older series I didn't get the see, that Voltes V and Combattler V, Raideen, ah so many others. Maybe if Gatchaman sell well enough we'll get more classic 70s shows like these. I want to see some of the other Tatsunoko Super hero shows too, like Cashan and Tekkaman (i liked their remakes, but I want to see the originals too).
Macross, ah Macross. Thank the gods for Animeigo, they did so much to bring this series to us in its original form, I can't thank them enough for all they have done for classic anime. Macross was something that Shoji Kawamori has never been able to top, sure his other Macross series were ok, but the original was magical. The other shows just don't stack up to its greatness, except with their mecha designs.
Captain Harlock is king among anime charactors, never to be dethroned! No matter how many slick, suave anime charactors come out of the woodwork, they will never be better than "The Man". if only we could get the original series on DVD, we'd have it made.
I've only seen one episode of VOTOMS, but I'm ready to buy it all, I though it was damn good so far.
Hokuto No Ken, that series will never get a fair shake in the west. but it is certainly a classic in every sense, I hate that they tried to remake it, nothing pisses me off more than when they do a poor remake and this one seems very poor.
The only time a newer anime is really good IMO, is when they are doing something that hasn't been done in a while, like Crest Of the Stars. They really hadn't done a space opera in a good long while, so this one interested me. Another would be Basilisk: Kouga Ninpo Cho, a really good Ninja series (Fuck Naruto, I said "GOOD" ninja series).
Inuyasha doesn't bother me, its enjoyable, but its not as good as Takahashi's earlier works.
Urusei Yatsura is the definative Wacky comedy, no one has been up to the challenge of making a better series than that (Or one at least as good as). Its a real shame too, because there have been some that could have been just as good and they gave up too soon.
ahh, I could go on all day, but I'll let some of y'all reply first hehe

Amen man! Macross is and always be number 1 for me. While all other series have some really cool mecha designs, give me a skull squadron Valkyrie anyday. Although I do have to say Macross Zero gets pretty high up on the list too... if only for some of the best combo cg/hand-drawn work I've ever seen. The cg valkyries are f'n awesome.
And while overrated by so many as THE series, Dragon Ball had its moments. Granted all of them came in the first Dragon Ball and not the crapfest that was DBZ. I mean young and naive Goku looking up Bulma's dress to see if she was like him or Oolong and Master Roshi's love for the women made it pretty damn funny. Although I've only seen the first episode, Toriyama's Dr. Slump was pretty funny too.
Another classic series for me is Slam Dunk. Sakuragi and the gang made that show awesome, not to mention my own love for b-ball made it more fun for me too. I only wish the did the entire manga into anime. I've still never read past where the anime ends so I've never gotten to see the national tournament.
As a side because it's not anime but more like Ultraman... has anyone ever seen Spectreman? He totally rules but none of my friends remember him :o That and he had enemies name Dr. Gori and his assistant Ra, and they were both monkeys. Gori-ra... oh those wacky Japanese

there is another serie that has 13 chapters about Athena vs Hades, but they havent completed yet.

I barely watch old anime :( It's not that accesible. I saw like half of Akira though, which is an awesome movie, I've owned it for like 6 weeks now and have only gotten too watching half. I also bought Ninja Ressurection at that time, before I heard about the Ninja turning into a jet -.- so I'm scared to watch it. I like Lupin, but I've only seen the Adult Swim Lupins. I don't know if "Case Closed" is old, but I like that, it seems kind of old. It's called Detective Conan out of America right?
I really liked Street Fighter Victory 2, or whatever the series was called. I think it's old, considering the animation quality, and the time the game came out. The dub's kind of annoying, but I've never seen the sub.
Okawara did the design for the Votoms, so he has done something cool in the past, not to mention some super robot designs. Stuff like Gao Gai Gar? Raideen? I never knew that before.
I never saw the original Macross series. I did like Macross Plus, except for that annoying cyber bitch I thought that series was pretty cool.
From what I've heard, Grandizer was HUGE in France, known as Goldorak.
Dragonball, DBZ, Dr.Slump and Slam Dunk's anime reincarnations never surpassed the quality of the mangas in my opinion. And after watching GT, I was wondering how far the Japanese are willing to milk out of the dying cow that is Dragonball. I think it says something when Toriyama's notable works since then are the Dragon Quest design. And for Slam Dunk anime, are you kidding? That shit is one of the worst adaptations of all time! Even some Japanese people I've talked to admit the anime was pure crap. Horrible animation quality and stretching the story with useless filler crap in order to have a loooooong series...

名探偵コナン (meitantei conan, detective conan) was first aired in 1996, so I'm not sure if that really qualifies as "old" but it's certainly not a new anime. There are about 400+ episodes of the show in all, and 50+ of them have been released in the states.
Lupin is a really good show, but the dub blows; it really bugs me how they change the dialogue to try to sound more up-to-date, and Lupin's identity is kind of shot when his voice is changed from Yamada Yasuo to an English voice actor. It's a pity he died, but fortunately Kurita Kanichi took over for him and does a perfect job of reproducing Yamada's voice, unlike other shows where the voices completely change when a new actor comes in (a la Doraemon and Chibi Maruko-chan).

Well unfortunately I never read the manga of Slam Dunk. When I got it a few years ago, the manga wasn't available to me. Maybe I should check it out. Either way I dug it because I thought it was fun and I'm a basketball fanatic. I also think Buzzer Beater is good too. Although I'd like to see how either story line for Buzzer Beater ,both the manga and anime, ends up because they are completely different.
And if you liked Macross Plus give Macross Zero a go. You can see how the very beginning of certain things in the Macross universe started i.e. the very first Valkyries.
And in Street Fighter 2 V the Dub is actually better than the sub. They make Ken and Ryu sound like the amibiguously gay duo. Ken should not sound anywhere near as effeminate as Vega. Though the show was only decent up until halfway when Dhalsim taught them the Hadou-ken technique. Then it got goofy. Plus their version of Charlie sucks donkey balls.
Another classic to me is the Irresponsible Captain Tyler. Tyler is the man. He had a bunch of chicks after him, he became a military hero, and was the ultimate slacker. Not to mention his crew had Jason Vorhees as a marine.

I know Okawara has done alot of great stuff in his day, but he ran out of ideas for Gundam years ago, I think he used 95% of them up in G Gundam, since they had to use like 20 years worth of designs in that one show. since them he really hasn't done anything really good, I mean he used the Gelgoog design how many times in SEED? and just as many Zaku types in SEED Destiny....Thats a sign that he's lost it.
The other Macross stories had their good and bad points, but none of them did everything right like the original, thats all I'm saying.
Saint Seiya TV ended with the Poseidon Saga, all the other chapters are OVA series, Which I hope ADV brings over as well. I don't know though, Classics don't tend to sell well, and most companies dump them before their finish releasing them unfortunately. But who knows, They Finished Dunbine, and they are about 60 episodes into Saint Seiya, so hopefully they will stay the course.
And yes, Italy and France had tons of classics out on DVD, I wish could understand either language just so I could grab a ton of rare shows, Argh! its so frustrating.
Kimagure Orange Road is on my wishlist, gods I have such a long list, and it keeps getting longer. I will probably start in on that one after I get all of UY on dvd, but who know, I may get rushed into it like I did Saint Seiya and Dunbine (I had meant to wait on those 2 shows, but when I thought ADV was going to discontinue them both just had to start in on them ASAP).
Starzinger, Saiyuki in Space, excellent Idea from Leiji Matsumoto. I want that one so badly too, it was alot of fun to watch when I was a kid, I still have 2 dubbed eps of it on tape (the dub sucks though).
Since I brought it up earlier, Do any of you worry about missing something because it might be discontinued before you get around to checking it out? This is something I'm constantly worried about, I mean the youngsters just aren't interested in the classics, and they are the ones buying the most anime. They tend to buy the latest shows and films and scoff at the legendary shows and film, saying they are too old and crappy to look at (most of the time they have never even seen it, and when they do they let the fact that its not all brand spanking new like their favorites, ruin it for them)
I keep recommending the classics when people ask whats good to start with, but I doubt anyone actually heeds my advice. its just scary how the fandom is nowadays.

Double Post again, sorry
Thanx Marblehead, but I'm already downloading Harlock, but its nice to know that there is a place for others to go get it from.
Dr. Hobo, I so want to grab Tylor, but I'm so torn right now because I want more Saint Seiya, Dunbine, and Urusei Yatsura. Also there are at least 5 Boxsets I want as well, 6 if you count Tylor. (the others are Votoms 1-3, Macross 1-3, Rayearth 1-2, Southern Cross, and Mospeada, Ok if you split up the first three it makes them 11 all together)
I can only get one boxset or 4 single discs a month, so its really hard to choose.
At least you guys have the luxury of collecting titles on anime, either by downloading or buying the DVD- I remember how I blew nearlt 3-4 hundred dollars on the entire series of Evangelion, and this was before anime boom started in America, I was still using 56k dial-up for internet, and a video title cost like 30 bucks each. Only two years later I'd see Eva neatly packaged into DVDs with extras and junk. Gah.... being a hardcore fan sucks nads.
Slam Dunk manga is a lot better than the anime, and is one of THE most popular mangas in Japan. When Shonen Jump was running Yu-Yu Hakusho/DBZ/Slam Dunk, its popularity was unmatched. But you know, now we see Shonen Jump published in America too. Strange things.
I don't even consider SEED to be a proper Gundam series, wasn't interested, and doubt if I'll ever see a single episode.
Conan is still going on, both manga and anime, and I'm just amazed by the will of the creators to stretch that thing as far as possible. Ditto to One Piece. For that, Urasawa Naoki gets my respect. Monster is simply amazing, and the 20th Century Boys kick ass too.

I remember those days too, I had to get boots at the local flea Market most of the time. I saw so many classics through Bootleggers, or I rented the few available and copied them myself. or borrowed from a friend and did the same. a large chunk of my tapes consist of copies I made, or Bootlegs. still waiting on some of them to get a DVD release so I can replace them.
The only problem nowadays with the way the market is, they release all the latest in droves, and the classics in a slow trickle. thats too unbalanced IMO.

Well I was unaware of such bootlegging thing was there, since I really didn't communicate with other anime fans, something I'm not quite eager to do this day as I find most of them to be without a taste. People who consider stuff like Naruto/Full Metal Alchemist as the best of anime disgust me. I did rent my EVA tapes to as many people as possible so I'd feel better about the money wasted away.
And it's the anime fans who don't watch the classic stuff because either the animation quality sucks (true for most part, but look at stuff like Akira!) or they just don't think it's 'cool.' With unproven market for classics, and the likelihood of them selling less than new popular stuff, I don't think it's going to change. Stuff like Macross is different as it has a rabid fanbase.

I don't think the Animation quality sucks on most of the classics, at one time that was top of the line. it just doesn't look as neat as the current crop, which I think adds to the charm.
I think the classic style seems much more lively that the today's style for the most part.
I agree that most of the fandom has no taste, I can't tell you how many times I have seen "Favorite anime" threads were everyone listed almost the exact same 10 or 20 shows, and all of them were made in the last 5 to 10 years, Thats just obsene! Then when they do watch a classic, the miss the whole point of the show because they can't get passed how old it looks compared to their favorites.

Ahh but gundam macross and a couple others I just love. I like mecha anime its the engineer in me going. How the hell can I make that? I really need to start collecting some of the older stuff so I can really start talking. I like the stuff I have seen but I alos like the cyber punk stuff some of the newer ones take along with them. Ghost in the shell is one of my favorites because it questions humanity and other things. I may be reading to much into them but oh well.

Comedy, Mecha, and Space Opera are my favorite Genres, I love fantasy too, but they don't do many good ones unfortunately (at least that I have seen)
Any combination of these genres could be a winner with me, if done properly.
If you are in the market for some classic Mecha/Sci Fi, here are a few lesser known series to look out for,
Armored Trooper VOTOMs
Aura Battler Dunbine
Hades Project Zeorymer
Megazone 23
Aim For the Top! Gunbuster
Genesis Climber Mospeada
Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross
That ought to be enough to get your collection started. Mospeada and Southern Cross were edited down and added onto Macross to make the Robotech trilogy (just in case anyone didn't know). They are pretty damn good in their own right, though they tend not to get a fair shake because of constant comparisons to Macross.
I would also like to add ICZER-1 to the list, I think people tend to look down on it too much, I found it quite interesting and weird, and I can't wait to get it on DVD in the Future.

Dude, Iczer 1 was strange. It's been so long since I've seen that one. Weird as it was I thought it was fun. I only remember bits and pieces... i think i'm gonna have to go find that and watch it again. It had some sequels too, I think. Iczelion and Iczer-3 were the titles I think.
How about Project A-ko? Now those were funny as hell. Especially when B-ko would try to steal and make C-ko her friend. Then there were the army of she-man beasts from another planet. Then when you found out it was all a dream in Project A-Ko : Blue side vs Grey side it made it all the more strange.
And Tylor is so worth it :) I've watched that series more times than I can remember. I know they released a new version of the dvds, remastered I think. I have the old ones though + the Ova's so no need for the new ones for me.

Iczer-1 is weird, but its very cool. I also want to get Iczer-3 even though its not a weird as Iczer-1, one of my favorite Joshi stars did the voice for Iczer-3, that right there makes it all worth it hehe. I never got to see Iczelion , so I don't know how worth it it might be, but I don't think that will be out on DVD for awhile.
Project A-ko is great, so many spoofs of legendary shows like Harlock and Hokuto No ken, just cracks me up. I gotta get the other OVAs sometime, since I only bought the movie so far. I did see Blue Vs. Grey on Sci Fi Channel all those years ago, and that seemed pretty damn cool too.
I know Tylor is well worth it, especially the new edition with the books and alot of Extras, its actually cheaper than the old set. I want it so badly, but there are other shows I want just as badly, so its going to be a tough decision.
I was going to buy Tylor this month, but I panicked when I though Dunbine and Saint Seiya were going to be discontinued (ADV had a sale on their site, and they made it seem like everything up for sale was being closed out and thos two shows were 2 of the few up for sale.)
Silly me, all I did was make my decision harder for next month. Now instead of asking myself, "do I want Mospeada, Southern Cross, or Tylor?" I'm asking myself "Do I want more Saint Seiya, more Dunbine, Mospeada, Southern Cross, Or Tylor?"
Tylor will probably win out in the end, but I will still have enough left over for either another volume of Saint Seiya or Dunbine (But which one is still up in the air, argh!).
Something else I'm dying to get on DVD, but it looks increasingly unlikely we will ever get a western release of is Macross: Do You Remember Love?. I'd get a fansub DVD if I could find a realy good copy, but they all seem to be pretty badly flawed, so I can only hope that Big West has a change of heart and decides to let someone like Animeigo license it.

And This thread is for people like yourself who are interested in Classic anime from a bygone era, so I don't think anyone here would look down on The "Shogun Warrior" shows.
Grendizer is in there.
Personally, the Shogun Warrior series beats any bishojo/bishonen crap they pump out every day. I was watching something done by Clamp, then realized ohmygodtheyfuckingrepeateveryfuckingshittheyeverma de.

I don't know much about CLAMP, haven't heard too many great things about them except that their artwork is might fine. Read that the animes for X and RG Veda sucked compared to the manga, and most of thier other work is the Cutsy Shoujo stuff
I like Rayearth though, thats about the only anime by CLAMP that I really like ATM.
And yes I'm aware it has some cutsy shoujo elements, but its a fantasy world, they have mecha designed by Masami Obari, and I think the story is pretty good.

What I meant was, the only way I knew Shogun Warriros was through the old Marvel comic books. I never knew that was real anime before I saw it in this thread. And, as you can tell, I don't watch a lot of anime. I watched the American Macross saga every morning for years, and the Starblazers version of Battle Ship Yamato. I haven't actually watched the originals of those either.
Never had the money to buy them and nobody around here rents them. I don't really care much for most anime, since the newer stuff seems more flash and appearance than storyline.
Sorry, but nothings beats the Yamato rising again to fight the good fight!

Yamato is absolutely one of the greatest anime of all time. Every time I mention it on another forum people act like I'm making up shows just to sound cool or something.
"You mean Space battleship Girl Yohko Yamamoto don't you?" Fuck If I meant that shit I would have said it just like that, not something completely different!
Some people act interested until they find out its an anime series that started in 1974. then its like "Oh, then that can't be a good anime, its too old" Fuck you!
Same story for Macross, they know Macross Plus, they know Macross 7, and they know Macross Zero. But they either never heard of the original Macross, or they disavowe any knowledge that it ever excisted. And If they do know it, you might get a smug little bastard stating that " its nothing compared to *insert recent anime title here*, it looks awful and the story is crap to boot"
WHAT!!????!!!!!
This is the fandom nowadays, this is why good classic shows don't sell well when they come out on DVD and get canned.
You will find plenty of comparable shows from that era listed here, you can even get Macross (in the Robotech form or the original) and Yamato on DVD (though only in the Starblazers form so far, which is good, but I would like to see it uncut and in Japanese)

Yeah, I hate that. That applies to everything, though. People just seem to think if its old, its no good, so they miss out on tons of music, books, movies, and anime.
The only thing I don't like about Starblazers and Macross is the singing. Yeesh, but I hate musicals. :)
Daishikaze
09-19-2005, 11:35 PM
Its been awhile since I saw starblazers so I don't remember the singing
But in the Robotech version of Macross, I hated the singing too, The american singer wasn't very good. I liked it in the Japanese version, Mari Iijima's version of Minmay sings alot better. and the songs actually change through out the series, where as in the american version they just replayed the same song everytime.
In Macross, music was essential, Minmay's songs made the Zentradi feel emotions for the first time in their excistance. Before then, they were just brutal and war-like, they never knew anything about music and culture, they were created by the Protoculture to fight wars for them, that was all they ever knew how to do.
I though that was a great message, that music could change a violent, war-like society and awaken things that they didn't know excisted within them, and realise that they don't need to fight for no reason.
Gods, Now I want to watch Macross again. shit its going to be really hard to make a decision for next months anime purchase.

Ya know, I think I was one of the few who enjoyed Macross 7. Most people think its crap because it doesn't revolve around only battle and blowing stuff up. The only thing that really bothered me about it was the amount of times they rehashed the same battle sequences every single episode. There was always the same flight scenes only jumbled around differently every episode. But I did love the music, and thats what 7 was about anyways. Submarine Street is still one of my favorite songs along with Angel Voice from the Dynamite 7 ova. And who else could sing infront of a galactic whale and still look cool like Basara? Well possibly Roy Fokker, but he'd look cool doing anything.
And I've always heard of Yamato but I've never had the opportunity to watch it. What was the story? If it's that good I might have to go searching for it.
Shogun Warriors was goofy as hell. I liked the armor and weapons, but I never saw enough of it to really follow the story. Plus Ulie, the US name for the little brat the warriors had to watch out for, was annoying as hell... though he did befriend a bad azz white tiger.
Daishikaze
09-20-2005, 12:37 PM
Oh there isn't anything really wrong with Macross 7, it just was not as good as the original series thats all. Same with Plus, it just doesn't stack up to what Macross was, The original was just too Phenomenal.
Yamato was the first Space Opera anime, it began in 1974, in the years when anime was coming out of the "Cartoons are Just for kids" mentality. The story was that the earth has become to radioactive as a result of a war with the Gamilon Empire. The Star Force built a starship out of the wreck of the WWII Battleship Yamato, Its mission is to go to Iscandar to get a device that will cleanse the radioactivity from the earth. Along the way they must face the Gamilon and their massive fleet.
Its alot more complicated than that, but that the jist of it really. I loved it when I was a kid and its still appealing to me nowadays. Yamato made a whole generation of anime fans, and it saddens me that it doesn't get even half the respect it deserves from the current fandom. Whats worse is that its only available in the US under its Dubbed and edited format of Star Blazers, which is still good, but I would really like to see in uncut in Japanese.
And You are thinking of Ronin Warriors. Shogun Warriors was the american name for all the Super Robots of the 70s. They made comics that depicted them all working together like a team (or something like that, can't remember), but in reality, those robots had nothing to do with eachother, they were all from different series. in the late 70s many of them were brought over and dubbed and given new american names (not all of them, but alot of them). They were still showing them in the early 80s too, which is when I saw them and Yamato.
Also I like Ronin Warriors, though I would rather see the uncut Japanese version (and my supplier just ran out of the boxset too, damn it). I haven't seen in a while, but I don't remember it being goofy. oh well
Dr. Hobo is my hero
09-20-2005, 01:49 PM
Ahh yeah, that's what I meant. Well it was goofy to me because of the dub more than anything else. Bad dubbing can make anything strange, not to mention I used to catch it on toonami (bleh, i hated edited stuff but at least I saw it for free). Which is why I'd also rather see it uncut.
Hmm... I wonder if I can find Yamato fansubbed and uncut. I was lucky a few years ago to get an uncut vhs version of "Macross: Do you remember love?", so maybe I can get lucky again.

yes you can probably find Fansubs of Yamato, but it will probably take a long time to find them, I don't even have that luxury, Since I would most likely only find French, german, or italian fansubs or something.
You can get the movies in Japanese at least, but the transfers are terrible since the are from VHS masters that have degraded badly over the years. I recommend getting them if you can get them without paying too much money (for the low quality, the asking price is ridiculously high IMO).

BGC 2032 was and still is excellent. Great animation, great Music, great Characters, and an excellent story. Too bad they didn't finish making it, it would have been even better if they had.
Additionally, I really think BGC gets a bad rep because of its age, the younger crowd tends to focus on the fact that its not all Computer graphics and shit, and miss alot of important things. They say the characters had no depth, and yet there are plenty of Character development stories.
Take Linna for instance, In episode 1 she seems to only be in it for the money, but in episode 2 you see she is a compassionate woman who is really in it to protect the innocent, and that people always come before money.
How about Priss? in the beginning she seems like a hard-hearted woman, but we see that she's just putting on a tough front, and she really is very kind-hearted, Like when she was trying to rescue Cynthia, and later she was looking after that young boy whose mother had to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. And we saw her tough front shatter when she had to kill her friend Sylvie, and how she couldn't deal with the guilt of it and quite the Knight Sabers. Incidentally, I learned why Priss was involved in the first place, a Rogue Boomer killed the man she loved.
We know why Sylia started the whole thing, Genom murdered her father, and used his work to do unspeakable things. Sylia is the mother figure of the group, and she's always there for her friends. She cares about each one of them, and knows how they feel when Genom does something to hurt innocent people.
We find out in the last episode alittle about Nene, She's involved because she's a AD police officer who feels that her force just can't handle the Boomer problem. and while she's not a strong fighter, she contributes the the group with her computer skills. We see that she is very sensitive and vulnerable, but she has alot of determination.
Its sad that this story didn't get told the was the creator wanted it to be. As great as it is, I can only think how much greater it would have been with those last 8 episodes.
Either way BGC, Iczer-1, and Megazone 23 put OVAs on the map, had they not been so successful, the idea may not have lasted too long.
Samwise, We all love Lupin III, so no one disagrees with you, ok?

I only recently (as of last year) became a DP fan. I liked Flash, and I saw the Streamline dub of one of th movies, But After I saw the Original OVA series, I was hooked.
I'm currently dloading some fansubbed episodes of the TV series and I'm finding the series to be every bit as entertaining as the OVAs (Maybe more).
I love all the anime I've seen based off of Haruka Takachiho's novels. I actually became more interested in DP after watching Crusher Joe. I like the style in which CJ was made and I read that DP was like that too, only funnier (Which means instant winner for me).
Gunsmith Cats was awesome if the Manga is anything to go by, I don't have the anime YET, but it and Riding Bean have been on my list for ages, so I will get around to them.

akira hasnt been mentioned enuff, or mabye thats due to everyone knowing everyone knows its is godly right ;]
akira helped shape my childhood.
i know the following arnt exactly old but they do follow the anime style of old. big o(originals), vampire hunter d, Evangenion(more on this later).
it took me a while to get over the christian influence in eva but once i did, i fell in love with it.
akira forces you to think(eva does too) and i love that.
anyone ever see Venus Wars? i rented that when i was liek 12 but if i rememebr it wasnt that bad. same with the New Dominion Tank Police(i think).
i liked the "deco-tech" of big o. using increadably elaborate and complex low tech stuff/styles to do high tech things. kinda like usign type writers for keyboards in matrix like stuff.
i have FotNS and havent ever been able to watch it. too boring?
Daishikaze
09-24-2005, 06:57 PM
With all due respect, could we please not mention Evangelian anymore in this thread? when I made this thread EVA was not one of the plethora of classic shows I wanted to discuss. I don't mean to be rude, so please don't think that of me, I just want to make sure this thread stays within the parameters I set. There is another Anime thread where they are discussing shows like EVA and Big O.
Akira, Venus Wars, Vampire Hunter D (1985) all belong in this thread. Big O, EVA, and shows from more recent years should be discussed in the other anime thread.
Also FoTNS should not be judged by the movie alone, the movie didn't even follow the storyline properly. The TV series and Manga are a million times better.
As for Akira being Godlike, that is a tremendous overstatement. Akira the Manga maybe, but the Movie is just good, not earth shatteringly good, just good. The story was just too big for one movie to contain, and while they did put in a commendable effort, it is far from godlike.
As much as I like Akira, it doesn't even crack my top ten anime films (possibly not even my top 20, but I'll have to think on that one).
Akira WAS the most expensive anime film ever, though I think Otomo topped his own record with Steam Boy- was disappointed with that one. With that, Akira probably has one of the best animations you can ever find in an anime. The bike chase scene, which gets quoted a lot, is both stylish, fast paced, and just pure kickass.
I do agree that the manga is so much better than the movie though. The story of Akira is vast, and the movie was the Reader's Digest version.
Speaking of mangas, Domu is another solid work from Otomo. Otomo as the manga artist/writer is just much better than Otomo as the filmmaker, though I liked his short film in Memories.
Daishikaze
09-24-2005, 10:27 PM
I ,unfortunately, don't own any of Otomo's Manga YET, but I will get some in the future, I have a very very very long list of manga to buy ATM. Problem is, I don't have a supplier here in Switzerland, so it gets pretty expensive ordering it online (even more than anime).
Anyone seen The Five Star Stories? Thats a damn good film IMO, but alas, its another sprawling epic too big for the big screen, so we only get the first volume's story. But its still great, and you do get this feeling that it is part of something greater. The Manga is #1 on my list since Mamoru Nagano is having it published in English now. I got 17 years worth of story to catch up on now haha, and if I take any longer catching up it will be 18 years worth soon (he's still writting it to this day, amazingly).
I actually have FFS up to volume 9 or 10... A volume comes out every year or two, the guy is not the hardest working person in manga industry.
The movie/OVA was supposedly the first part of many installments, but it was scrapped after lack of enthusiasm from the creator and the budget.
Nagano Mamoru is not the best storyteller though. He introduces with about 5-10 characters with each volume and rarely spends time with them. Even Amaterasu, the main character, may get sidetracked depending on the character he's focusing on. The story is told over milleniums, different mechas, characters, world, and it would require more close reading from the readers to grasp the entire story. While his style of drawing is reminiscent of the 80's, he is not a great artist either, though he has gotten better over the years.
Yet somehow, even with all these flaws, the immesive scale of the story and recurring characters/plot is enough to draw me back in. From what I know, FFS fans are considered hardcore, even amongst Japanese otakus.
Daishikaze
09-24-2005, 11:05 PM
I only have Volume 1 so far. But they are actually almost up to volume 30 now.
I love his artwork, especially his mecha designs, they are all very unique and elegant.
I can't agree or disagree on the storytelling part its hard to tell from only one volume. But from what I have seen he tends to show things happening during different time periods, like Volume one seemed like it was in the far future for the first few pages, then it seems to go back in time to when it all started.
I think for alot of people the full scope of the story can be pretty jarring, especially for a manga. I think its something that you really have to pay alot of close attention to to fully understand whats going on. I don't think its bad storytelling per say, I think he may be being too clever for his own good, and it chases away some readers. Like I said, I haven't read a whole lot, since its hard to get here, so I can't really comment on it. Maybe its just not your bag? who can say?
I'm not sure how the volume works out in English, but so far I have either up to 12 or 13.
His mecha designs are something else, but I don't think they are really practical :) compared to other 'real' robot series. But from what I gathered, it's more like a fantasy novel in science fiction setting, epsecially with the different kingdoms/the relationship between the Fatimas and the knights.
The main story arc is told with about two milleniums in between. There may be side stories or whatever depending on what's tickling his fancy at the moment.
I do like the epic scale of the story, something you don't see quite often in any medium these days, because it's time consuming and puts a lot of pressure on the creator. And while I admire that, if you go beyond volume 1, you will see almost a new character for the new chapter. Some of them may be vital, some of them not, just content to be chewing off the scenery. That's probably my disappointment, that he should stick to lesser characters, spend less time introducing a new one, and JUST GET ON WITH IT. (I pictured that scene from Monty Python's Holy Grail for a sec)
I do like FFS, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten all the volumes so far. His flaws are also his strenghs, I guess, but the story can be strong or weak from volume to volume. So far I think the best story arc was involing Colus and the Junon. This is not really a spoiler per se...

On the english ones, he split the Japanese volumes into groups of 4 to 6 volumes each. I though it was the english ones we were talking about.
So your reading it in Japanese? Are you a native Japanese speaker?
No I'm not- I am bilingual in English/Korean, and have been reading a lot of mangas in Korean. They get it pretty closely in terms of translation from what I've been told, and usually way ahead of the English publications. That's how I got to read the newer stuff of Blade of Immortal, Gantz, etc. In terms of speaking Japanese, I finally memorized the hiragana, and can do simple introductions, clueless in reading mangas.
Also, many Japanese mangas are published right to left, which is the original way it is published in Japan.
Anyway, I don't think the Japanese authors have anything to do with splitting up the volumes- more than anything, it's the publishers who are trying to sell it as monthlys rather than trade paperbacks. Same goes for Blade of Immortal, Oh my Goddess, etc.
Daishikaze
09-24-2005, 11:43 PM
I see.
The cool thing about the english editions is it still reads from right to left, and they left the sound effects untranslated so it doesn't change the artwork in any way, and there is a glossary in the back that gives the translation of the sound effect characters. So at least they don't totally americanize it.
I want to get the DVD of the movie, but my supplier doesnt have it yet. Same With certain other DVDs, like Iczer One and Sword of Doom. I know they can get them because they have other films and shows from the companies that released these ones, they just don't seem to know those DVDs excist yet.
I did see the Toystar version of Five Star Stories bit ago, seemed like they did a pretty good job. Though I don't think there's too many fans of FSS overseas either. maybe some people picked up the model kits they have out, which are quite beautiful, and very expensive.
If you are in Switzerland, it can be a bit of a problem acquiring certain animes. SInce you are in Europe, I'm guessing PAL format, Region 2? Or you get stuff intended for the North American audiences as well?
Daishikaze
09-25-2005, 02:30 AM
I get stuff intended for the US. I steer clear of R2 usually, especially with anime, they don't do good work with anime on DVD in Europe.
My supplier is usually really good, but there are those few instances where they should have something and they don't, and when they are out of stock they usually never order anymore, even when you put it on your list( which they claim to check) for the to do so.
Can't complain too much though, their selection is fantastic, no one else in the whole country carries that much anime, even the specialty stores.
It shouldn't be too expensive to get stuff from US, what with the higher value of Euros and whatnot... Getting anime straight from Japan is outrageously expensive though, about two, three time higher. They do have the good packaging and a lot of rare stuff packaged into neat little packages, like Zeta Gundam box set.

I got Bandai USA's Zeta Gundam Boxset, with the 9 MS figurine pencil sharpeners, poster, artbox, and Backstory booklet, it was about 219 Chf. for the whole shebang. and its perfect if you don't count that they couldn't secure the rights to the Opening and Ending themes, They ended up using Incidental music for both.
Next Month I may buy the new Tylor boxset and either Mospeada, Southern Cross, or Macross Box 1.

I also ordered the Gall Force thinpak set because the price was unbelieveably good, 34 CHF, thats alittle over 20 US dollars, for 4 DVDs! not bad at all.
Any fans of Gall Force here? I saw one of the films on Sci-fi channel, it was pretty good despite the hack job done by the network. I look forward to seeing it in full along with the rest of them.

Fist of the North Star was a great movie. I don't know if it was a series though.
I saw Saint Seiya or whatever they called it when they brought it to the US a few years ago, it was okay. But I have an old school Japanese video tape my sister bought for me on a trip to Japan with all sorts of music videos for anime on it. There are some pretty kick ass videos on there I'd like to check out the series behind.
Guyver was AWESOME. Chest cannon = crazy cool.
I liked Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, Shenlong = devastatingly cool. Deathscythe and Heavy Arms were okay too, and Wing and Epion pretty much raped all, but Tallgeese 2 holds onto my heart of hearts. Stupid long winded Treize, DIE AND GIVE ME YOUR MS!
G Gundam was... eh, better than Mobile Suit Gundam IMO.
08th MS Team was pretty cool. It was cool that the main setting was on Earth, and that the regular soldiers were able to do some real fighting, it wasn't just a few select fighters. Look what the captain did with that ball unit in the first episode. Crazy skillz of craziness right there.
And my very first anime, Ronin Warriors. I loved that show so much. I thought it was a neat premise, and it really got me hooked on the stuff.
Evangelion, however, was a vision of beauty. Oh ASUKA X3!!!!!
Is Samurai Deeper Kyo old enough to qualify, I'm not sure when it was made. But it's good.

Fist of the North Star was a series, and it puts the film to shame really.
Saint Seiya is great IMO, it doesn't fall into the same traps that as most Tourney type shows fall into.
Guyver gets a bad rep because of the ending, but I agree there is alot to like about that series. Maybe they will finally do right by it with the new show they are working on at the moment
Gundam Wing, though doesn't fall into topic as it was made in 1996, I will reply to this statement. Yes the mecha look really nice and flashy, but They don't impress this Gundam fan one bit. I'll take the Nu Gundam over the Wing or any of the others any day of the week. The story was shit as well, people are always like "But it tells you why war is bad" and I suppose it does in a very long winded, nonsensical kinda way. But as some one once said, "Wing is a 40+ episode series that tells you why War is bad, OO80 is a 6 episode series that shows you why war is bad"
That speaks volumes about the quality of the UC gundam shows In my book, because it never took very long for them to show you why war is bad, within the first few episode it showed you why war was bad, and it kept showing you. The characters aren't just soldiers doing their jobs unquestioningly, they are human beings with feelings. Wing and just about every other AU series lacked this quality, they dazzle with lots of usually pointless action, and fill in the gaps with long winded BS that never actually says anything in particular. But because the Action is top notch, no one really pays attention to whats being said anyway.
G Gundam can not be considered a better gundam series that the Original simply because it isn't a gundam series to begin with, Its a Super Robot Tribute show that happens to call every robot a Gundam of some type. And for a Super Robot Tribute show, its good, but to say its a better gundam series is impossible because it isn't Gundam, End of Story.
8th Ms was made around the same time as Wing, so Its doesn't belong here either, but its at least a decent effort, even though it Retconns everything that happened in the original.
Ronin Warriors is very similar in style to Saint Seiya IMO; so if you like RW you'll like SS.
You may have missed my earlier post, so I'll say it again, Evangelion goes in the other anime thread.
Same with Kyo, other anime thread.
Dashikaze, something about your comment concerning the gundam series just tickles me. See, UC gundams, or Gundams made during 70-early 90's never had the kind of action sequence newer Gundams had, like more choreographed battles and zany cameras. But toward the late 80's, circa Zeta-Double Zeta-Char's Counter Attack-even F91, they did have amazing animation quality because that was the peak of the Bubble economy. Every Japanese person had shitload of money, even anime companies, so that went into that.
MS team did have some huge plot holes, and though squeazing in a love angle is nothing new in Gundam series, I thought 08 was cutting a bit too close. Oh how I was stupefied by Gundam SEED.

Crusher Joe
How many here have seen this? and what did you think of it if you have seen it.
Personally, I think this is the "Castle Of Cagliostro of Space Opera films", in that it had that same fun feeling that "Castle" had, only with more of a Classic Star Wars vibe instead of the Indiana Jones Vibe.
Written by Haruka Takachiho, creator of the Dirty Pair, so it has a sense of humor as well as great action and story.
Excellent character designs By Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, famous for his Gundam Character designs, and Mecha Designs by the Incomparable Shoji Kawamori, who created Macross and did alot of Design work for that series aswell.
if you haven't seen it and would like to, Animeigo has made it available in the west as a Two disc set that includes 2 hour long Crusher Joe OVA episodes. That 4 hours of sci-fi action for one great low price.

I grew up watching Robotech. I loved that show as a kid, and I'm surprised by the underground cult following it attracts some 20 years later through the McKinney books, websites, comics, video games, and RPG's. You know how Star Trek never really disappeared when it went off the air some 40 years ago? Robotech is the underground Star Trek.
When I found out that Robotech was actually an amalgamation of 3 different anime (Carl Macek original only intended to produce Macross in the U.S., but in order to meet the 52 episode minimum for TV syndication, he threw in Southern Cross and Mospaeda), I wanted to return to the source. Macross: DYRL was one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life. And then Animeigo released the remastered Superdimensional Fortress Macross - talk about cloud nine. And then I saw Macross Plus - this is by far Shoji Kawamori's finest production.
Did anyone else suffer through that godforsakenly horrible, censored, butchered Robotech: Clash of the Bionoids?
Other anime I encountered early in life:
The original Mobile Suit Gundam caught my fancy. I bought the movies when Bandai released the collection in the U.S., but I'm thinking getting the whole series would probably be better.
Akira - I've seen this one at the very least 10 times. I still don't understand what the heck is going on. Unfortunately, Steamboy was the same way.
Iria: Zeiram - I've only seen this on the sci-fi channel, and most of the online places I trust either don't have this DVD in stock or want $50 for it. I might just break down and dole out the $50 for it.
Go, Go, Go! - Known in America as Speed Racer. I don't know why I liked this show, but I did. They did a remake of it when I visited Japan that was actually really cool to watch.
Sabre Rider and the Star Sheriffs - I'm sure this was probably an anime in Japan first, and I'd be interested to know what its original name was. Cowboys in space, robot horses, bad guys who come from the "Vapor Zone", and giant spaceships that turn into robot cowboys (including the 10 gallon hat) - only a Japanese mind could come up with something like this.
Daishikaze

I started alittle bit before Robotech (which I think I mentioned earlier in the thread, so I won't repeat myself). But I saw it too as a child and it was pretty good despite being made up of 3 shows that have no connection with eachother at all.
as much as I like alot of the later Macross series, they really don't compare to the original, That was just a phenomenal show that really got everything right IMO. DYRL? is definately one of greatest Anime films of all time, its a pity we'll never get a proper english translation (Thanks alot Harmony Gold, you just couldn't keep your mouths shut).
With Gundam its best to stay with the UC Timeline, The AU shows are all crap (Except Turn A). Zeta Gundam came out on DVD last year, you might still be able to find the boxset if your lucky. I've written to Bandai asking when the last 2 UC series will come out over here, hopefully they will reply with good news.
As Much as I like Akira, it really is kinda overrated. Its put on this enormous pedestal simply because its so weird it must be genius. The Manga deserves the high Praise, the film was only good.
Iria is a damn good one too, If you don't feel like shelling out 50 bucks, you might try waiting for CPM to re-release it, they seem to be re-releasing alot of stuff lately. I just ordered The new Gall Force boxset, it only cost half as much as the older set does.
Everyone knows Mach Go! Go! Go!, probably the second most well known anime in the world following Tetsuwan Atom.
I don't know anything about this Sabre Rider and the Star Sheriffs, I'll have to look it up, but it certainly does sound Anime-ish, I'll be very surprised if its not.
EDIT: Yep. Sabre Rider is an anime called Sei Jyushi Bismark (AKA: Bismark The Star Musketeers). looks very intriguing, maybe we could pester ADV or Bandai to release the Japanese version ;)

Cowboy Bebop, Samurai X and Trigun are all late 90s as well!

I'm pretty sure pokemon and digimon were created in the early to mid nineties in Japan and didn't come out in North America until the late nineties so TECHNICALLY I would be right. And if you want to play that game, Cowboy Bebop did not come out in North American until a few years ago. And besides, I just said that I wasn't exposed to anime as a child. As a child, I was only exposed to those television shows I listed. I wasn't exposed to anime until I was at least twelve. It has full relevence to this thread, so maybe instead of instantly freaking out, you could have shown a little courtesty? I don't go rampaging threads when people make a simple mistake and neither do a lot of people, so maybe you should learn to calm the fuck down.

I was calm with you, the second paragraph was more aimed at the guy after you, sorry not to be that clear. I actually edited the second part on, I really should have separated them.
I have checked the Anime database for dates, the earliest Pokemon was 1997, and the earliest Digimon was 1999 just so you know.
Plus, I have calmly explained at least 4 times in this thread that anything from 1995 and beyond does not belong in this thread, that there is another General Anime thread for those. The title should have been clear enough but people still insist on Posting about more recent stuff.
Some people don't know, and are tentative about their post, saying " I don't know if is belongs here but....." and I calmly explain why it does not, thats what I did with you.
Admittedly I was kinda harsh with Idlethought, but I don't think he cared whether is faves fall under the category or not, he just wanted to declare his love for those shows.

<bump>
I saw this threat and had to comment.
Anime from the early 90s,80s,70s is to me the only anime. Digital media has brought us much benefit in many areas, but in my opinion, it just so happened to have ruined animation. CG anime doesnt have the OMFG that looks awesome! effect that the mecha anime of the 80s did. When watching the intro to super dimentional century orguss for example, I was always :D , even though i'd seen it a hundred times. Because it was indeed awesome to behold, amazing animation, amazingly detailed mecha designs, awesome soundtrack, amazing character designs, it was a great peice of animation. I never see anime that has that effect on me anymore. In CG anime, the animation/mecha/characters look so cookie-cutter produced, and so lifeless, without souls. There is something about every frame being handdrawn in older anime that gives it what made japanese animation so great.
As a fan of animation, I want to see stuff like 5 foot tall A-ko swinging around to kick the arm clean off of a 50 foot mecha, then lifting it up and hurling it 30 feet in the air, then looking cool as it explodes on contact with the ground. Ultra detailed action sequences like that rarely happen anymore. Just look at gundam SEED :( what a bore. It couldnt stand a second against gundam 0083 as far as animation goes. And by the way, the gunbuster intro always gave me that :D effect too, happy to see it as an avatar.
(so ends the personal opinion of a geek dreaming of the glorious mecha days)

Surixurient, Thank the gods you arrived!
You just read my mind with that post, You said everything I have been saying to people for quite some time. Modern anime just doesn't give me the thrill that the classics do. I suppose its because many of the newest anime are now considered American/Japanese co-productions, with american companies working with the Animators to make something that appeals not only to the Japanese market, but to the US market as well. With anime not being as popular as it once was in Japan, they really needed to start catering ot the US market to bring in more viewers, and sell more Merchendise. Unfortunatly for them they forgot that oversaturating the market is not a good thing, and have really muddled things up.
This is only a recent development though, I think anime was starting to lose alot of its zip before 2000. They started making sequals to shows that ended years ago (Waiting until no one cared about the series anymore before continuing it), and remaking shows that didn't need to be remade, nothing pisses me off like bad remakes.
Anyways, I recent got my hands on Gall Force boxset, Megazone 23 pt. 1 (with collectors box), and Kimagure Orange Road Vol. 1 & 2.
Gall Force
Damn good set, Part 1:The Eternal Story was fantastic, has some killer action scenes, cool character designs courtesy of Kenichi Sonoda, Phenomenal Mecha designs from Artmic studios, good music, and an interesting story. Part 2: Destruction brings us more of the same, focusing on my fave charactor from the first part. Part 3: The Stardust War is more subdued than its predesessors, but it does a very important thing, it answers all the questions you have been asking yourself since part one. Rhea Gall Force is the beginning to a new chapter of the series, taking place in the far future on planet earth. Rhea Gall Force keeps the tradition alive, offerings great mecha & Character designs, good music, and another interesting story. its a great Buy for little money, go out and grab it today.
Megazone 23 part 1:
Another fantastic series by Artmic Studios, with all their hallmarks. Haruhiko Mikimoto of Macross fame does the character designs here, and he's amazing as usual. The guys at Artmic really out did themselves in the mecha department, and the soundtrack is phenomenal (something I've become accustomed to from their other productions). The story was 12 years ahead of its time, And way better than what hollywood did with it 12 years later. Only downside is that part one ends abruptly, so I'm dying to know what happens now. I'll definately be buying parts 2 and 3 this month.
Kimagure Orange Road
A really fun romantic comedy with a strange twist. I'm really enjoying this series so far, can't wait to see more. Wonderful characters, a good story, good music, what more can I ask for?
All three shows get high recommendations from me.

Yes Kenichi Sonoda is one of my favorite character designers, he also did Otaku No Video characters and the Super Deformed Double Feature OVA which stars superdeformed versions of gal force, bgc, and gaiarth. Artemic studios seem to always have Sonoda working on the titles they produce save casshan robot hunter, madox-01, and dangaioh. (for ones i have)
I will have to see Megazone 23 which you mention being Mikimoto did the Gunbuster, Macross, Orguss, and 0080 war in the pocket Character designs, which i love.
As for Orange Road, I will check out the tv series in hopes that it is better than the movie i saw where the main guy is struggleing between 2 girls. It was a bit too boring for me. It didnt have any comedy at all so hopfully the comedy in the series will save it.

With KOR, you have to see the TV series first, the movie is the end of the series thats why it wasn't funny, it was the resolution to the Love triangle, and resolving something like that is never a fun job.
Megazone 23 is definately something you need to grab, I think anyone who loves vintage anime should own this trilogy, A Sci-fi classic in every sense. and if you don't already have it, grab Gall Force as well, I think it is tremendous as well.

hi there everyone, im new to this forum, as a matter of fact its my first post.
I dont think forum searching would help and this thread is quite long.
THere are 2 animes im looking for and its been......over 10 years, so im guessing my memory of those animes have changed.
1 of the anime is about kids race with remote control cars, kinda like those RC racing cars. But i dont think the kids in the show used any remote controls, but instead they used sticks??!?! for some reason im thinking hockey-like sticks. and they will have add ons and upgrades for their rc cars, i was wondering what the name of this anime was?
also the other one i was really interested in was my favorite anime, it involved a kid sitting on a robot (mecha?) and its less mature, so its not gundam or macross type. The robots can be upgrade and would usually be upgrade after each fight, and its the one kid and the robot thats the main character in this anime. I believe near the series finale they have to fight through "levels" to get to the boss, and they represtented the levels by a mountain that they would need to climb/move up, at one point somehting happened, they had to start a few levels lower. For some reason im thinknig theres some comedy and also i beleive that the kid and robot had a really close relationship.
oh by the way this is when dragon ball z was showing. back then this was near late 80s and early 90s hopefully that can help target and minimize the anime. im just looking for the title/name, but if u can find a DL link that would be great.
i watched this back in Hong Kong, so im guessing there wasnt much delay from japan releasing anime.
oh another thing is that there was this baseball anime that was be aired around that time. the basball main character had crazy pitches, black hole pitches, rainbow pitches, music pitches. some hitters hit as if they were hunting for fishes. sorry i dont know the name of this anime either.
please advise
thanks

All i can really give you is just that its from the late 80s to early 90's era. 89-91, but im guessing more like from 90-91.
yea and the RC racing one was around that time too, it could be at the same time that the mecha anime was showing or before or after (heh i know im not that helpful)
yea giant gorg i think it was a lot older, (not sure), but i think that kid also fought other mecha (that might have had ppl on them too)
But like i said before near the end of the anime, (or at least i thought it was the end) because this is when he was getting stronger. they depicted his travel through a mountain like map.
-----level 3--------
------------level 2--------------
-----------------Level 1----------------------
etc....
and they would have a chibby mecha+kid on the map.
im really looking forward to watching this, its been like 16 years
i rememeber dragon ball z running at night during this anime was on, on the day. I've watched this anime in Hong Kong.
sorry if im not much help.

From the 80's I watched Astroboy and Voltron.around around 92, I watched The Jungle Book(Shounen Mowgli) This was one of my favorites when I was nine years old. Used to watch it in the morning before going to school.
Teknoman was another favorite of mine when I wa 12-13, but I never got to watch the end. The last episode I saw, is when Slade's sister dies. I loved that show!!

Mikoal, I've seen the opening for Raijin-oh, maybe thats the one? its definately close at least.
Black dog, you'll be pleased to know Teknoman is being released by Media Blasters right now, so you'll get your chance to finish it.
Personally,I'm waiting for them to start with the original Japanese version, Tekkaman Blade. But I may get the Teknoman dub as well.
EDIT: Mikoal, could it be Yuusha Exkaiser?

hmmm im not too sure, i dont think its that......
unfortunately the only thing that raelly sticks out is the mountain, as they were journeying to the top, they lost and had fallen a few levels
i want to say that the mechas seemed to be less transformerish and more thicker body than the thin ones.....but i might be way off base
but if u know where theres a list of animes running in the 90-91 that would be great, maybe i can find some there.
but thanks alot for ur help. i hope someone can find something about it. im crossing my fingers:D

Anime News Network is more comprehensive , but not search function, so you'll have to go through everything one by one

I've Seen 2 episode of the 1972 Cutey Honey Series, and the whole 1990 OVA series. Its fun, like many of Go Nagai's work, its too bad his work doesn't get much respect these days, he was a pioneer of sorts.
Hopefully with the Success of ADV's release of the 1972 Gatchaman series, we'll see more classics like the Original Cutey Honey come to western shores.

Im looking for a certain title here. I beleive its a 70s anime, its essentially a rip off star wars, between a monarchy and a republic and aparently has a rediculous number of characters. Can anybody put a title on what I'm describing?

I've seen nearly every space opera since Space battleship Yamato (1974), and I have never seen one from the 70s that was like that. You may have been slightly miss-informed
Can you give some more specifics? I might be able to help you out with more clues.

I can't stand Naruto because it lacks heart. There is no redeeming feature to it for me, like most of the Shounen genre of recent years. Every Shounen series seems to be trying to recreate the fanaticism DBZ started years ago. DBZ was not a very good series either, but it had such a rabid fanbase that would buy anything and everything even slightly connected to it. That is exactly what shows like Naruto and Bleach are like at the moment.
I prefer classics like Saint Seiya and Hokuto No Ken personally, they had alot of heart, and it shows. They have had a loyal world-wide fanbase for many many years because of this. The only place in the world they never got an even break in is the USA.
I don't think Naruto or Bleach with have that kind of lasting success.

I never liked Bleach and many people anime fourms find that weird when they ask; "What Series Do You Hate the Most?" The top of my list is always Bleach.
I personally I like shows like Nana or Paradise Kiss because they're aimed at young woman between the ages of 20 and 25, but the problem is that there really aren't many josei series out there and that makes me sad, so I'm stuck watching seinen series.
I liked Dragon Ball, but Dragon Ball Z had me saying; "WTF?"
If Naruto ever has a second generation, I am going to gut myself.

My favorite Genre is mainly Sci-fi, especially Mecha War-dramas and Space Operas. I like Fantasy, but there aren't that many really really good fantasy series available.
Comedy is another one I like, but alot of recent comedies aren't very funny to me, they are mostly stupid, so I tend to avoid alot of them.
Martial arts series are now mainly DBZ-esque shows that I want no part of. There are exceptions of course, but they are too few at the moment.
The state of anime today is one of the reasons I'm more drawn to anime of yesteryear. Sure Anime today is alot more fluid that in the old days, but has lost alot of what made me love watching it as well. Anime of today doesn't have that X factor that really hooked me all those years ago. There is too much emphasis on looking as flashy as possible these days, it just makes everything seem so disingenuous.

Yes the animation does look better now then it did ten years ago due to the fact that now animation studios use computers to color in the cel rather than painting them in allowing the artist to make the character more detailed, but in the process the studio has to have a low buget for the animation its self.

Ok, I can help you out with classics, especially in the Sci-fi genre.
Space Battleship Yamato is a must have for any fans of Space Operas. Its Japans first real attempt at such a series, and it is a milestone in Anime history. Sadly only the US Dubbed versions called Star Blazers is available in R1 dvd. I believe Central Anime has fansubbed most of the Japanese series, so if you use bit torrent you should be able to find it. You can find the films on DVD with subs, though not absolute pristine quality last time I checked. Hopefully Voyager Entertainment might have gotten new prints from Japan by now.
Mobile Suit Gundam is another milestone in the Space Opera/War Drama genre. MSG was the first series to have mecha used as mass-produced war machines instead of the usual Super Hero Robot that was prevelent at the time. It was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, who would go on to create other classics like Aura Battler Dunbine, Heavy Metal L-Gaim, and Space Runaway IDEON. With MSG, I have to recommend buying the Movie Trilogy, because the series is only available in dub format, and they may be releasing the full Dub/Sub hybrid version in the future. Also the Movies are easier to follow for new viewers than the series is.
I would also recommend sticking the U.C. Gundam (MSG, Zeta Gundam, Char's Counterattack, 0080, 0083, 8th MS Team) Universe, all the alternates like Gundam Wing and SEED are pretty awful.
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross is another series that is essential, and you are in luck because ADV has almost finished releasing it again. This series combined the Yamato and Gundam styles to make something really special. It also created the first Transformable mecha, which would spawn a huge craze even to this day.
Crusher Joe is a great anime film, a fun Sci-fi actioner from Haruka Takachiho (creator of the Dirty Pair). Its definately in the Original Star Wars style IMO. Get it while you can still find it, Animeigo has just lost the rights to it so it won't be out there for much longer.
Arcadia Of My Youth is another great space opera film by Leiji Matsumoto. Its the Origin story of one of anime's most memorable characters, Captain Harlock. There is some really nice Ship-to-ship battles in this one, and alot of drama.
Armored Trooper VOTOMS is an underappreciated Classic that loses alot of its glory because of all Gundam and Macross series, but it easily stands out on its own. CPM just released this series again after a long wait, if you hurry now you can get a special ammo can to store the discs in.
Gall Force Trilogy is a really special OVA movie series. Some tremendous Space battles in this, some of the best I've ever seen personally. Alot of themes are explored here, The Cold War, The Battle of the Sexes, Mutually Assured Destruction, the cycle of Life, its really quite impressive. CPM released it as a very inexpensive boxset along with Rhea Gall Force. When I bought it, I felt guilty because it was such a bargain, it almost felt like I was ripping them off.
Megazone 23 trilogy its hard to call this a space opera, it has a more cyberpunk theme to it, but I suppose it could still qualify. This series has really had alot of influence on some future projects, after you see this, you'll know what I mean.
The Original Dirty Pair is a fun series in the same vein as Crusher Joe (same creator, obviously). This is a damn cool show, it has alot more humor that CJ does. ADV has the OVA series and Films, I'm still waiting for the TV series to be licensed.
That should be enough to get you started. There are others, but these are actually available in the west so I thought I would start with those. If you don't mind Fansubs, there are quite a few more, let me know if there is any other genre I can help you with

Legend of the Galactic Heroes isn't really like Star Wars, though. However, it is very good, Central Anime has fansubbed it too.
Don't confuse Yamato with Yamamoto. There is a similarly titled, but far inferior show called Space Battleship Girl Yamamoto.

Are these the cars you were talking about in the anime you were looking for?

http://www.tamiya.com/japan/mini4wd/box03.htm
I used to watch this, but I can't remember the name of it. This anime was about these little cars that were really popular at the time, which is why I watched it. I used to have a bunch of these things. We used to race them a lot at school. You could buy the car itself pretty cheap, about $5.00. And there were a bunch of parts you could buy to upgrade them. You can still buy these things, but they're nowhere near as popular as they used to be. Sorry I don't have more info on the actual anime, but from what I remember it was basically about getting special parts, or custom making parts to beat the rival teams cars.

These are the kinds of tracks kids raced the little cars on:
http://www.marutaka.gr.jp/data/4WDm01.jpg
There wasn't anything like that in our area, so we just raced them in the gym or down the halls at school. BTW, in the anime they contolled them with sticks(hockey sticks, I think), because they don't turn. You basically turn it on, and let it go.

It was a very popular "straight to video" serie in early 90's, now it has become a cult serie. Originally it was dubbed in finnish and the 24 episodes were cutted into 4 one hour episodes. Later they released the original serie on DVD. Also Finland was probably the first western country to release the spin off serie Ginga Densetsu Weed on DVD.

Bo problem! I wish I could remember more about the old stuff I used to watch when I was a kid. The funny thing is that I was REALLY into that little car anime, because me and my friends used to have them. Anyway, I guess some others that I watched were' Kinnikuman, Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball, and there were a whole bunch of anime about some kind of fighter that learned a new technique every episode(they usually had a new show every season). Animes I remember that we rented were; Macross: Do You Remember Love, Yamato, The Dagger Of Kamui, Arion, Yotoden(I just found out what this was called a couple of months ago! HA), and the first Gundam. Oh yeah, and Hotaru No Hakka.

Some of them were new at the time, but I'm sure there were re-runs of older stuff too, though. I mostly watched the stuff that was on TV after the "bell" rang in the evening. I'm not sure if this is just in the Yokosuka area or not, but around sundown (4:00 or 5:00 in winter, 6:00 in summer) this bell thing goes off. Basically, all the kids know it's time to go home for dinner when the bell goes off. Anyway, I'd usually watch the shows that came on after we got home. Sunday morning had stuff too, but it was more Power Ranger/KamenRider live action type stuff.

I think that is was already finished when I got back to Japan in 1987 (I was 10 at the time). Or if it was still running on TV, I just missed it somehow. I saw some pieces of it, but never actually got to see a whole episode. I think that Hokutonoken was just ending. I only got to see a couple of those. Of course I also saw stuff like Doraemon, Sazae-san, and Chibi Maruko, too. I don't know if they were new episodes or reruns, but they were always on.
It's kind of funny, but Urusei Yatsura is how I found out that there were anime fans in the States. I was in New Mexico for my senior year of high school and I met a guy that had a Urusei Yatsura pin on his jacket. I kept looking at it, because I kept thinking that it couldn't be what I thought it was. It turns out the guy was the president of the school's anime club. I had no idea that there WAS an anime club, or that anybody at the school even knew what anime was.

Yeah, UY was over in 86, but I heard that its still being shown in syndication to this day, which is an impressive feat for an anime series I'm told.
I remember being one of the few anime fans around when I was a kid, since I got to see the dub versions of alot of classic 70s anime quite early in my life. It was quite unusual for me to meet anyone else who saw those shows growing up, So I can imagine why it would surprising to find out that the US had a fandom back in those days.
