Yeah, just thought it would be nice to create a topic dedicated to this genre of music. I just recently copped a copy of Nirvana's Nevermind, and I can't stop listening to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Lithium". I also managed to get my hands on a couple of other CDs, one of Alice in Chains and another of Stone Temple Pilots. Those have really got me hooked on Grunge music.
So, anybody else here listen to Grunge?

I do. Not that much nowadays but I listen to a fair share...
If you're just getting started, here's a few essential bands to kick it up.
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Alice in Chains
Jane's Addiction
Blur
Foo Fighters
I grew out of grunge/alternative a while ago...for some reason, heavier stuff attracts me more.

What Alice in Chains CD? Check out Dirt, then get Soundgarden's Superunknown album.

Ah, Alternative radio of the 90's. Hmm, I listened to all those bands then (and just on occasion, now). I didn't know/think FF was classified as Grunge. I sort of feel that way about all of them ,minus Nirvana. I guess the early versions of those bands have that theme. They all seem to be more intricate in that respect. That's my opinion. I, too have gone heavier, darker, and even faster. :innocent:

Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains were the only grunge bands I enjoyed. 1990s American grunge Nirvana made me wish I was deaf.

I never got into Alice In Chains. It could very well be that the rock station here chooses the WORST times to play their music and it never fits....waking up early to drive a long distance Sunday Morning or everytime I drive early to work Mon-Fri. I end up turning down and tuning out.
The only part of that list I listen to now is Nirvana (occasionally), Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, and Sound Garden.
Hey Citizen, you should list a few of those prog bands.
Dirt is possibly one of the best CDs of any time, in any genre. Closely followed by Nevermind.
And STP could have done so much more if they didn't fuck themselves all up. That said, Scott Weiland has another project going at the moment - Velvet Revolver.
For fans of grunge - looking at you, Fish - check out Revolver. They're a mix of grunge and moody blues. Excellent stuff.

I got Jar of Flies. I got it from my Uncle who lives here in Long Island.

I've heard of the 60's band of the same name, but I never really heard their songs. It would be hard to look them up since if you look up "Nirvana" you'd usually find the newer Grunge band.

I think I've heard a song or two from them before, just can't remember their names. Oh well, gonna check 'em out when I have time. When I have time.

I hope it won't take ten years like last time. Besides, finding postage stamps for catapults is IMPOSSIBLE.

I'd add Temple of the Dog to that list, whose members eventually split to form Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.

I was never big into grunge, but I'm learning some Nirvana songs to play on my bass. Now I'm starting to get hooked.

Well I guess Foos are more alternative than anything, but I figured they should be there just cuz Grohl was in Nirvana.
Crappy reasoning now that I think about it, since by that logic, Audioslave (whose vocalist, Chris Cornell was in Soundgarden) should be grunge and that band is definitely not grunge.
I love Slash, but tbh Velvet Revolver really doesn't cut it for me.

I listened to all of those groups back in the 90s and still play their songs once in a while.
# of songs on my iTunes
Nirvana = 14
Pearl Jam = 17
Soundgarden = 16
Alice in Chains = 13
Mother Love Bone - 4
Temple of the Dog = 3
STP = 20
Silverchair = 6
L7 = 2
Of course, there are plenty more groups if you want to open it up to alternative rather than just grunge. I wouldn't really include Jane's Addiction, Foo Fighters or Blur in the grunge movement, though I have a number of songs from each of them as well.

L7 eh? I have some of those as well. Yeh, I found them on accident. It was a nice find.
Yeh, since Grohl came after that initial scene, I never put that band with that scene. I agree with taking Blur and Jane's Addiction out as well. However, I would put FF and those two together in the Alt scene and just in case people need some idea on alt, try Smashing Pumpkins before they went electronica (well back to, since they started with drum machines).
Alternative is a pretty wide spectrum. Though doing that would be better than trying to go through all the sub-sub genres (metalxcore, forest, math, white, black, heart, screamo, etc) and I am against the breaking up of sub-genres into sub-genres. It would be forever....but I digress...

Pretend We're Dead was my favorite song for a while and I still love it. I've got it cranked up right now.

Ha, yep. I have that one. Actually, that's the one I accidentally found and got into them with. It was on at 4am, on the radio, on my way back home from band practice.

Yeah, you have to look up specific album titles, otherwise you get the wrong band. They're a good prog. band. They made the first true rock opera, The Story of Simon Simopath.
I forgot that Silverchair back in the day toyed with that style, because their new work is so completely different. And I wasn't aware that Temple Of The Dog became Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. How excellent is that!

Yeah, grunge is great. Nirvana of course is dominant, but I like them all to some extent. Jar of Flies is an awesome cd. I also love Hum and Veruca Salt, though they might not be considered grunge, but their from the same time.
Oh and Audioslave's first album was pretty grungy, but the follow-ups were pretty shitty.

Silverchair is the best by far i think. Don't forget Collective Soul... and i think you can throw Bush in there too.

I found Audioslave's 2nd and 3rd albums better than the first. Other than Cochise, the band sounded sloppy, the songs were lackluster and the overall feel wasn't there.
My fave Grunge is probably Soundgarden. I started with Nirvana and Pearl Jam (who didn't lol), but I found that Cobaine and Vedder are no where near the level of Cornell as far as vocals go.
IMO...
Superunknown > Ten > Nevermind.
Black Hole Sun > Smells like Teen Spirit > Jeremy.

Hmm, in hindsight when I look back at that era I feel that Soundgarden should have had more time in the limelight than Nirvana (damn the MTv brain). I mean everyone has heard Nirvana; I feel Soundgarden is more sound lyrically and musically. I dug them both, but in accordance to what I listen to now, I think Soundgarden takes the cake.
Also, they should have a)not broken up and b) had equal if not more of a support and following. Eh, also the unfortunate event to Cobain didn't help matters. That blew them up enormous (moreso than they were). I wonder how the events would turn out if he didn't. Would they be KoRn, still releasing albums even after their "expiration" or what.

Soundgarden is my all time favorite band...But I prefer the term "Seattle Sound" to grunge. I hate that term, because I think the 'big four' (Pearl Jam, 'garden, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana) all had distinct styles, and vastly different ones at that. Temple of the Dog is also one of my favorite albums of all time...I don't care for STP. Audioslave was decent, but I found a lot of their tracks repetitive, and I've never gotten into Velvet Revolver.
