View Full Version : What's your scale of "lol" what does it really mean?

It has been a long belief of mine that when people type lol they really aren't laughing at all. It's just paying respect to a comment that was amusing. Now...everyone has their own litlte way of telling you when they are really laughing and when their not. They have certian phrases and acronyms to reserve to when they find something really worth a hoot and a hollar.

And i'm sure everyone has their ladder of funny, so I ask...what's your ladder of funny?

Example, I will lead first and not go too much in detail.

at first

heh, or ha.: This is pretty saying "nice try asshole, mabye if you had some skill."

hmph.: It's just indifference. I recognize it was a joke, but wasn't sure what to do, so Hmph comes out.

lol.: Yeah...if you make me chuckle or smile on the inside, you get an lol. What you said could have even been funny, but I was too tired or I heard it before. But like my research proves, lol doesn't really mean I'm laughing outloud.

Get the pattern? I'll do my list of ones that I generally use and are conistant later, but first I will wait to see what others say. Let's also compare.

*but I think it's safe to say that when people type lol, their usually not actually laughing outloud no?*

Heh or Ha - Joke... yes...
Haha - 1-2 second Chuckle
lol - 3-5 second chuckle
LOL! - 10 second laugh
LMAO! - Real laughter
LOL! followed by another laugh LMAO! - Very rare. I only get this when I play a online computer games and something really stupid happens. For example: A guy in Counter-strike throws a grenade and it bounces off the wall back in front of his face and detonates or the grenade he threw ends up killing 2 of his teammates. HAHA!

KILL LOL.

Now, I am a giggler by nature, and enjoy laughing. There are a lot of funny people online.

Lol was fine and new when I was 11. Hey, wow. A way to show you think things are funny. Cool.
However, now I can have conversations of this variety:

Guy: hi. how r u lol Oh, great start. Why, oh why, are you laughing?
Helli: I am fine, but perhaps you should be worried about the mutated mouse about to eat your grandmother.
Guy: lol well u r nuts. lol. Oh yes, I garnered the honour of double lols. But what the fuck are you laughing at, bucko?
Helli: No. Just no. I am fully qualified.
Guy: so, wtf hav u been up 2? havnt seen u in ages. LOL. been somewhere?Ok,well I can deal with wtf. But then coming and using LOL as a standalone sentence? With no laughable context? arrrgh.
Helli: Well, I did have you blocked. I'm not sure why you can even see me now. You have 30 seconds to prove you are worthy.
Guy: lol u bitch. wat u want me to say? i am da shit. of course u wanna talk to me. every1 does. lol. come on and get some of this. u no u want 2. lol. Argh. Just Argh.
Helli: Congratulations, you are the missing link of the evolutionary chain. Please check into the nearest museum to claim your prize. Goodbye.
Guy: LOL

Meh. So I can't be bothered wasting my time talking to little shits who LOL their way from here to Timbucktoo, especially if they don't even take the most basic of steps for respect of English. I don't claim that all IM should be entirely formal. But still. LOL kills me. You aren't laughing. There was no humour in the comment you are responding to. It is an inane crutch on which one lets others know you are ready to be whacked. I can't even properly verbalise my hatred of it, there are no words. Same goes for WTFROTLMFAOOMGBBQ!!11uno!!!!!!elf!1111!1twelve.

What's worse is that someone actually used it in conversation. In real life. When I was standing right infront of them. WHEN THEY WEREN'T FREAKING LAUGHING.

For me, a hehe signifies that I am most probably giggling. Increasing capitalisation and repetitions indicate the intensity of laughter. There. Easy as pie.

heh: You tried being funny. Didn't really work
lol: Congrats, you made me smile. On the inside.
LOL or hahaha: You made me chuckle!

KILL LOL.

Marry me.

No, it's not that serious. Have a serious six week relationship which will leave me with a broken heart, fond memories and a stain on my carpet.

I don't think I've ever used LOL. If I want to laugh, I'll type out HAHAHAHAHAHA. The longer the line, the bigger the laugh.

There is also heh for smaller things, but I actually have a laugh that sounds like "heh," so I'm just imitating real life.

Usually what ever I feel like typing.
Ditto.

It really depends on my play field, too. If I go on random chat room (which I haven't done in years) I might melt my brain a little and bust out with an "lol" for laugh's sake. But usually it's a no. Especially on forums.

Casually with friends on instant messengers:
-ahh/ehh/um.../mugh/etc: I don't really mind of it.
-ha/heh: Mildly amusing.
-haha: I find it silly/funny.
-LMAO: Sarcasm for "I don't find it that funny", usually following, "um...".
-(when nothing is type for a while): Either I lost interest, or am laughing too hard to press the keys. I'll tell you if it's the latter :)

But those who IM with me normally know I love to use:

XD
Same here...but only it's (-_-)p

hmm
I don't have any set in stone, depends how I feel I guess, usually it's:

heh - little smile/laugh

lol - pretty broad, can mean I'm laughing a bit more than "heh" or nearly laughing as much as...

LOL - When I burst out laughing, usually lasts 5 - 30 seconds

ahahahaha...etc - When I laugh for a long time, usually as long as the haha's go :D

and of course XD which can be used for a variety of laughs, mostly LOL's and above though.

:D

Hmm... If there are so many varying ideas on what these mean to people, I better make mine clear.

If I put heh, hah, lol, heh heh, or hah hah, it pretty much means I'm chuckling. I don't display amusement unless I mean it. No meaningless lol's for me.

lmao usually means you have me laughing.

If none of these show up, you'll know if I am laughing if I tell you "That was funny" or any other words that could be related to that.

to be honest, i rarely laugh out loud anymore....i don't know. It's just the sad side effects of trying to be funny yourself.

I've noticed my friends who absoulutly have no wit in them laugh the hardest on the simplest things, probably because they can't go "oh i could have thought of that/better."

I use to make fun of them for it, but then I think, they laugh, I don't. I don't see me benefitting.

5 to 30 second laugh?? Holy jeez. The last time that happened when when i first discovred Az's edotiraisl and read some of the really good ones. HOnestly if you get a loud laugh/chuckle out of me you've made my day.

sounds sadder than it is really, but I envy people who find things funnier than I do. I guess i'm just some bitter lonely old man(at age 19 woooh what an accomplishment! 'm arleady ahead by 6 years on my plan!).

You're alright, trust me. I know a lot of people that laugh out at the oddest things and they are not popular outside of their groups of lemmings.

It just means you save your laughs for quality humor.

I'm glad this thread was made... because damn I always figured lol was lol. Seems it's become more complex than that.

heh - ah whatever i really dont care what you said.
ha - see i told you so, sarcastic
haha - that was pretty funny. I use this alot. That's the funny acknowledge. i'm going, haha for real.
hahaha - shit was funny as hell and i'm laughing. or if i'm eating or something and cant really laugh because i'll spit my food out but the funny is trying to bust out. The longer the "hahahahaha", or the more distorted it looks "hahhha" the harder i'm laughing if i'm actually typing the shit out.

lol - shit wasnt really funny and i'm just saying lol to fuck with you.
lolz - i'm really being sarcastic as fuck

lol is pretty dumb and ppl hate it and that's why it's good to use for that purpose to prove that whatever so and so said, wasnt really funny but they were obviously going for a laugh and failed(and if not then it's even better).

"lol", god what an annoying bugger that acronym is. I hate it and avoid using it. Here's a conversation with me and my friend we had a long time ago.

Me: 'Cause we don't get to talk much.
Friend: That's probably because we don't hang out!!
Me: Well, I'm thinking about it.
Friend: We must hang out! I went to that fair with you!
Friend: You owe me! lol

Two things, 1. "lol" makes you look stupid, and 2. It makes me think you're not serious. Mostly the former. I just don't think it makes good conversation. For some reason, when I see it, I try to imagine someone actually laughing when they type that. Just seems odd. I mean, try sending in a resumé with that on there. "I'm looking for a job at (place of employment) in (field) lol". Yeah, see how that job interview goes after that. I don't mind if people use it once in a while, but don't over do it. I guess I shouldn't worry about it too much, it's emoticons that really annoy more than anything else (as does a total disregard for good grammar on the internet).

Blah, despise using lol because it's overused, and rofl and its derivatives have never been my style. Smilies have always come off as girly/cutesy, and so I've always avoided using them myself as well.

In place of all of the above I use 'hehehe...' (very picky about making sure it's 3 h's, 3 e's, and 3 .'s, all lowercase).

I agree. When I get the ol' "lol" business I just want to say "hey, shorthand sucks and you should use real English". I'm more of the "haha" type myself.

My favorite "lol" scenario is when you say something that is actually relevant or interesting, i.e., "I read this article I think you should take a look at, it might help your research project a whole lot" and you get a pause for a couple minutes maybe, and then......."lol". I mean seriously, people. Why?!

lol- amused...or used during a story to let someone know that something was in jest or to let someone know I'm kidding.
lmao- a little more amused...or have just used "lol" too often.
rotflmao- that's a rare one, but pretty much the same as "lmao"

In all actuality, I hate "lol" with a passion. Probably because it reminds me of the AOL chatroom days...

Anyway, my internet laugh scale...

"heh" - Good job, you made a joke.
"lmao" - I'm actually laughing.
"LMAO" - That was fuckin' funny as hell!

And... that's it. Simple and plain; not too much of a laughing scale...

Thespis

Every once in a while I use "LoL", but I try not to. Usually a "LoL" is given when I'm slightly amused. I use "Heh" for a small chuckle, "hehe" for a more substantial chuckle, and a "haha" for an actual laugh. "ROFL" is a very energetic laugh, or I'll actually say, "I literally laughed out loud". I like my ass though, so I try not to laugh it off.

heh/hehe: okay, I guess, but I didn't really find it that funny
lol: made me smile/chuckle
lmao/rofl: congrats, you had me actually laughing
ROFLMAO: I'm grinning like hell, and maybe banging the desk
GYAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!: probably gloating, but I may must be finding this incredibly funny
combination of several (Especially the last two) + *dies laughing* I really can't breathe, I'm laughing so hard. I'm in PAIN. this usually happens when reading Az's editorials, or some of the quotes at bash.org. or when my pal is being a perv (you know who you are, you ero-gaki, you)

Dead Sexy Vocab

I never even USED the acronym in about a year or so.

My scale:

Heh = Manage a chuckle
Haha = Smiling
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAetcetc = Grinning broadly
And if I really am laughing out loud, I use IT. But in reality, it's hard to make me laugh out loud in the IntarWeb.
Basically, whenever they say something funny, they usually kill it when they type in, "LOL" after.
Therefore, I tell my friend(s), "SHUT UP, MAGGOT."
