Hello all, you may remember my other post "A show of hands please". I'm now doing that homework and could use your help.

Q: Introduce yourself. Include your nationality, university, university year and major. You can write "Curtin (My uni) and your name and major in English if you don't know how to write them in Japanese.

My answer so far:
A: watashiwa Douglas desu. Dozo yuroshiku. Watashiwa Australiaginto daigakusei desu. watashiwa ichinensei to senkouwa ashiakenkyuu desu.

Could someone please tell me how to say "I attend curtin university? Would it go something like "Curtin daigakuno gakusei"?

Any general tips? Remember this is my third week of Japanese so I don't know any katakana or kanji.

You need one and only one watasi ha -- the topic is you and it probably won't change at all. Also, most of those 'to' would be better said with 'de'.

To elaborate on the above: "to" is the equivalent of "and" when listing items and so on, but *not* when linking sentences. To link sentences, you use the "te" form of verbs, which is of course "de" in the case of "da"/"desu".

Suggestions are in bold. Words you need to check the spelling on are in red.

Hurry up and learn katakana and kanji.

Hiragana are the "squiggly shapes" written below the part where he "wrote it himself" as he "normally" would.

I'm going to highjack this thread! Any tips on a free good hiragana/katakana/kanji font that is easily readable in this forum in 1280x1024 resolution?
My current one is pretty unreadable due to pixelgoofication and "ni" looks like a "mu" at best and "mu" reminds me of a "hu" (was it a "fu" in hepburn? My Japanese teacher translated the syllables to Finnish himself and he did loads of "we Japanese don't use this or this anymore"). Also all the left sides in "re", "a", "o" and right sides in "ga", "ka" etc. are just horrible so I have to guess.

hold ctrl and scroll your mouse wheel so you can read it better, this will increase the font size.

はじめまして、 わたし は Aaron です、 どうぞよろしく。 オーストラリアじん です。 モナシュ だいがく の がくせい です。 せん こう は ヂジタル ムルチミヂア です。

Hajimemashite, watashi wa Aaron desu, douzoyoroshiku. Oosutorariajin desu. Monashyu daigaku no gakusei desu. Senkoo wa digitaru maruchimidia desu.

Doug, you need to pay much more attention to the correct spelling of words, you're only in week three but don't let any bad spelling habbits start now

meh. Spelling only matters for katakana gairaigo (read: total bullshit) because in most cases once you learn the kanji you need, your use of kana for anything but okurigana will diminish significantly

Is this a full time course? do you major in Japanese?

What have you learned in three weeks?

Stop now and learn hiragana and katakana, just incase you missed it STOP NOW AND LEARN HIRAGANA AND KATAKANA!

And because a mess of hiragana is worse than a mess of Romaji, learn some Kanji too.

Thanks Intense, as I don't have a wheel mouse, I used my fancy media keyboard elite's zoom button and found out that it's just a font size/resolution problem.

Plus it doesn't work for all browsers.

Turn cleartype on/off and find out which one you like more. Raise the font size in your browser's setting. Getting a new font would be kind of pointless, since you don't really want to override every webpage's font settings with yours.

Personally, though, in places like IRC, where I can select the font, I use Kochi Gothic.

Pot calling the kettle African American.

aha, i didn't want to write it in English, so phonetically based katakana was the closest i could do.

just out of curiosity, what coarse do you think i do based on that katakana description?

You could use JWPce! It's a really cool software!

http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html

very bottom dowload it and you can basically use it as a pretty cool dictionary.

It's しゅっしん (http://dict.regex.info/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/dosearch?sDict=on&H=PS&L=J&T=%1B%24B%247%24e%24C%247%24s%1B%28B&WC=none&LI=on)。 しゅしん (http://dict.regex.info/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/dosearch?sDict=on&H=PS&L=J&T=%1B%24B%247%24e%247%24s%1B%28B&WC=none&LI=on) can mean several other things.

And Vic, the word you want for "edit" is 編集(へんしゅう), and though ポスト is ... acceptable, 投稿(とうこう) or even カキコ (short for 書き込む(かきこむ)) might be better. If you hate katakana as much as I do, anyway :)

Edit: 9:30 AM in Japan!

The IME comes with documentation in English BTW. Don't be a wanker.

Scott
03-20-2007, 01:41 PM
As far as the small y goes, just type 'sha' or 'ja' or whatever you want and it'll do it automatically.

Don't make the IME harder than it has to be... you just type the thing however you'd normally type the romaji, and 99% of the time it'll work.
