So I was watching the news and the local news lately and go so angry.

Here is the story, it wasn't written, but told.

Refugees from New Orleans went to a town (I forget the name) in Louisiana. When they reached the bridge of the town the Sheriff stood there with some police officers refusing refugees inside of their town.

He said "We aren't gonna let you [blacks] in our town. What happened to New Orleans isn't happening here."

They then proceeded to fire off their weapons and then TOOK THEIR FOOD AND WATER AWAY FROM THEN.

I seriously thought about driving down there and yelling at the governor.

Well, that would be pretty messed up if it is true. What news station was it on....I'd like to investigate further...

Personally, I wouldn't want any of the ghetto-ass people from NO in my town either. He didn't turn them away because they're black per se, but because NO is one of the ghettoest cities anywhere, and most of the people in it are themselves as ghetto as hell.

Taking away their supplies, however, was a horrible, awful thing to do. Everybody involved should lose their jobs for that one.

If thats true, I doubt it though, its not so much a reason to hate the "south" but to hate a racist fuck with a badge. Not everyone in the south totes a shotgun, chews tobacco and has thier name on thier belt buckle.

Though I do have a shotgun.

God, what a shithead. The worst part of it was taking away the supplies THEY brought with them. I mean, considering nothing seems to be getting done about the current situation, you think they would be a bit more understanding. If I was one of the people looking for refuge and I was there, I would've gone up to that sheriff and punched his lights out.

In a semi-related story, my dad told me there was a fireman in New York that attacked an Arabic man for no reason. The fireman was arrested and he stated "He looked like he was part of Al-Quaida (sp?)". WHAT. THE. FUCK. God, racists piss me the hell off.

EDIT: Found the article on the fireman: http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/345655p-295069c.html

Okay it was the city of Gretna.

They said "We don't want a Superdome her or another New Orleans (referring to looting)."

The sad thing is there are alot of NO refugees that just want to start over and/or be able to go home. They don't want to cause trouble.
Unfortunately there are trouble makers and they've already started causing more trouble here in Dallas than we need (we have a enough crap going as it is in South Dallas/Oak Cliff).
A story on the news tonight was that there was an attempted kidnapping of a 14 year old girl by an NO refugee in Forth Worth. That's the kind of trouble we don't want.
Not saying that the other town was right to turn them away and taking their supplies is inhumane (and makes me want to kick their asses) but NO was not known for its low rate of crime that's for sure.

What a sick incident! It such a shame that some people can't show a little compassion.

I sense some civil rights violations prosecutions in the air. The town of Gretna might be in the market for new law enforcement officers shortly.

What a sick incident! It such a shame that some people can't show a little compassion.

First, there are plenty of people showing compasion. How many millions of dollars are going to flood relief from around the country (yet I see those canadians and french doing NOTHING, just like when the tsunami hit!)? In fact, so much money is being siphoned into helping new orleans and the south that other charity's are hurting for some cash.

Second, that isn't a reason to hate the south, that's a reason to hate some pinpricks who think that they're big and bad because they have badges to hide behind.

Third, despite points 1 and 2, that' still a disgusting thing to here.

Ummm... Those Canadians have sent money, supplies and personnel already and were one of the FIRST countries to do so.

I hadn't heard anything about that, but I don't think you'd be an idiot and lie about something that is easy to find out about so I'll believe you. Meh, the french still suck.

Other countries DON'T HAVE to give the U.S money, so even if your facts were right , I do not believe that argument counts.

Zell -> Making a blanket statement like All law enforcment down there needs to have a supreme ass beating is the same as having this thread labeled "Another reason to hate the south." While the cops in one city are pulling the assinine crap in the article, many N.O. cops are working out there despite thier own families being caught up in everything thats going on.

I'm assuming that they took the food and water thinking that they looted it or something like that.

GTARob
09-14-2005, 01:53 AM
I have nothing against anyone "looting" food or water. To me that's not looting. That is surviving in the absence of aid. Looting to me is the assholes riding a bike out of Walmart holding a shotgun. Looting is walking out of a store with a tv and 6 pairs of shoes. Those guys are pricks.

Whatever the cops reasons for taking thier food and water. Those reasons were wrong. And the "individuals" responsible need to be punished. Disasters like this, I think, just bring to the forefront what kind of a person someone really is.

Well, the French did react by sending supplies and personnel very soon, on the 1st of September to be precise, and some of them were on-site before the American rescue operations arrived...

It's all here if you can read it:
http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/.../ouragan-katrina-31-aout-2005_22046.html

What they sent:
- A first group of 35 specialists trained in hurricane relief located in the French Carribeans, followed by a detachement of 60 airborne disaster relief specialists.

- All the stocks available for disaster relief in the French Carribeans: 600 tents, 1000 beds, 60 power groups, 3 motopumps, 3 water-treatment stations, 1000 jerricans.

- 2 planes already on-site, 6 more sent from France, 2 navy carriers with one chopper, with 20 military medics

- in cooperation with the private sector, teams have been set up to assist in retablishing phone lines and pumping the water out.

And the French were by no means the only ones:
http://www9.sbs.com.au/theworldnews/region.php?id=120303&region=4

Don't make the world regret its generosity by being an ungrateful bastard...

Besides, looking back at the tsunami relief efforts, almost all countries gave money and sent relief teams to assist, many of them gave far more as a share of their GDP than the US did. If you seriously believe that Americans are the only charitable people in the world, you are quite unquestionably an idiot.

I'm from the South, a minority, even.

I figure that there's going to be pricks like that everywhere- the firefighter from New York, for example. Racism will exist as long as the society places certain group of people above others, which happens, both openly and subtly.

I read a lot about the world saying something about the racial tension in the States after Katrina, and trust me, it's not just us. And for the number of pricks who makes this world tough there's others who try to make it a better place.

lol kk my view being that i am a minority in the south but not originally is that we are bearable until its a hassle to deal with us. Then we become an annoyance. TO me the south is a congregation of two faced people that are nice to you one day then if by chance being nice isnt the in thing to do at the moment will give you the cold shoulder just liek tht. Im not saying everyone is liek that in the south becuz tht would be foolish but i will say without certainty that the majority of non minorities "white" people ar eliek that here...

Well, being in the south, I've met my fair share of pricks. I've also met my fair share of good people who are worth something. That said, I don't have high hopes for Louisiana right now. I know a lot of people around my city are grateful for any aid we're getting. Though there is the few exceptions... like this one lady bitching about how she didn't have Cable yet -_- Urge to stab... *cough* But yar, you're gonna find a lot of ungrateful pricks and you're also gonna find the good seeds that make any volunteer efforts worth it to some people. From what I gather, I believe most of our city's police force is gone and it's actually out of state aid doing the work here. Of course, that being a rumor I can't guarantee the authenticity of it.

It's just stupid arrogance and insecure superiority complexes. You'd think a storm like this would humble people. But no, people still want to complain about not having chicken or cable or steal shit they don't need that probably is going to be really water damaged anyway, and thus worthless. I was uncomfortable, but I never complained once without cable, or power. My first thoughts were to just stay alive and take care of myself and my family. It is true however that you don't know what you've lost until you don't have it anymore. And I'll be honest that I did find myself wishing we had electricity or cable, but it wasn't a top priority.

Disasters are either going to bring out the best in people or the worst in people, and understand that while the US is one nation, and one collective body, we are a bunch of people with a bunch of different views that only knows how to unite when our asses are in trouble generally. I'm sorry to say that this disaster has brought out the worst in a large number of people.

I don't agree with what happened in Gretna and everyone I've talked to about that incident agrees on this: We can understand turning back the refugees, because that's a lot of people to handle at once, especially on foot. But stealing their food and water is fucked up.

I dont feel that it was racism, as much as the fear of too little enforcement for people that they dont know. As for the supplies taking and shotgunning, I never saw that mentioned in the article. Wewt for being in the 10 percentile of Waveland that didnt get destroyed (wet, but not destroyed)

Kinda on the topic of the thread title... Another reason to hate the south.

Fleming senior wears racist T-shirt to school (http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/091505/met_19772830.shtml)

My favorite quote from this article. "I'm not racist or anything. It's just, some people I hate, some people I don't get along with. And black people just happen to be the ones because they think they're better than everyone else."

A close second. "I'm a redneck," he said. "But no, I'm not racist."

Wow... just wow.

The Netherlands currently has a navy warship with a crew helping 24/7 in New Orleans. Just saying, I've heard so many ignorant bullshit (not from this forum) from Americans saying we're not doing anything to help. Yet Dutch citizens have given a lot to your New Orleans relief already.
