Hello!
I have received my first piece of assessed homework and I was wondering if you people could help me a bit. I'm not asking for you to do it for me, but to kind of "spell check" it.
The homework is to:
1. Introduce yourself. Include your nationality, university, university year and major. You can write "Curtin" and your name and major in English if you don't know how to write them in Japanese.
2. Write about 3 of your friends including the same information above. Compare the information by using と も and じやないだす / じやありません. Write at least 8 sentences.
So once I have completed it I will post it here in hiragana and English translation, and ou guys can correct me or help me improve.
Anyone interested?
EDIT: Right to Write
Hello!
I have received my first piece of assessed homework and I was wondering if you people could help me a bit. I'm not asking for you to do it for me, but to kind of "spell check" it.
The homework is to:
1. Introduce yourself. Include your nationality, university, university year and major. You can write "Curtin" and your name and major in English if you don't know how to right (write) them in Japanese.
2. Write about 3 of your friends including the same information above. Compare the information by using と も and どやないだす (じゃないです)/ じや (じゃ)ありません. Write at least 8 sentences.
So once I have completed it I will post it here in hiragana and English translation, and ou (you) guys can correct me or help me improve.
Anyone interested?
My suggestions are in red.
Oh, and じゃ is written by typing "ja".
By the way, are you writing in hiragana because you're not allowed to use kanji or your teacher thinks it's "too difficult"? If you really *must* write in hiragana, make it legible by writing word+particle, space, word+particle. Like this:
まいにち ほっかいどうで ゆきが ふると ききました。
It's also nearly impossible to misspell something in Japanese, but you're doing a good job so far.

You didn't need to correct me, I have only slept 4 hours in the last 30 or so.
I'm only in week 3 of University so my Japanese is extremely limited, the curriculum has only just finished the hiragana and today we did some particles.
btw, in a previous mini-test there was a word that sounded like echi (えち?) Is that any relation to ecchi?
Scott

ecchi would be e(little tsu)chi. Maybe eki? That's a pretty common early word.
do ya nai? Did you mean de wa nai?
I dare say どやないだす needed correction, as it makes absolutely no sense and it is only by a great stretch of imagination that I assumed you meant じゃないです。Being half-asleep also does not help, and is not an excuse to use on a test or exam either.
えち could be 愛知, but I seriously doubt it would be on any mini-test for beginning Japanese. It's most likely 駅 (えき)。

This just proves how little you know about Japanese. You must relearn your lessons! do ya nai desu is one of 573 grammar points on the Level 0 proficiency exam...
(perhaps he means echi as in echizen?)

I copied the hiragana exactly as it appeared on the assessment sheet.

I was drunk in a bar in Kabukicho last night with two of my friends from back home who are visiting. My friend's girlfriend has never been to Japan, so with help from the bartender we agreed to help her learn Japanese.
After some careful drunken thinking I said:
"Let's start with さんピー!"
The bartender started laughing so hard that he dropped the dart he was holding in his hand instead of actually throwing it at the board. Luckily I didn't have to explain what was so funny ...

should I be ashamed if I don't know what さんピー means?
No. You should just say it as often as possible in Kabukicho until someone offers you a price.
Why's half of it in katakana? I'm already intruiged by the way it's written. Of course I'm going to want to know what it means. Any relation to "manko"?
Any relation to "manko"?
:D
Perhaps if you wrote it as 3P ... and it's not an emoticon of a nose and tongue sticking out.
mikem
03-12-2007, 06:04 AM
Wasn't really sure how I should type it. Any Japanese native speaker would read 3P correctly, but most English speakers only see three-pee.
Anyway, it means three-some. Just before that we were discussing how sixty-nine was sixty-nine in both Japanese and English. (It had come up as my friend's score on her last throw of darts.) The bartender was actually surprised that we said "sixty-nine" too.

Well I think that "chin" refers to penis, so perhaps that phrase is "blowjob" or "sex."

That's the first I've heard of that....
3 people? 3P San/3 P?
And yeah, as far as I know Chin means penis too. Hello Penis Pokemon. What are your powers?

I think your self introduction should include the phrase ちんちんだいすき. It's a very very Japanese thing to say. (Though my experiences might be a little skewed.)

Its written in Hiragana in the work I'm doing but it doesn't have an english translation next to it, just a "?"
Nice try, but

八十年代 = 80's

訓令式(くんれいしき) it's faster to type. Better get used to the billion different romaji styles.
As for si/shi ti/chi - the japanese sound is neither. The romaji is irrelevant since the sound doesn't exist in english to begin with.

There is zero difference between si/shi and ti/chi. I must admit though that reading zi in romaji always messes with my brain in evil ways.
I love seeing people write this kind of stuff though:
choxtuto
I personally find chotto much easier to do, but some of my friends swear by the x+ mangling. :eyepop:
Tyoxtuto maxtute! Hepburn! Hepburn! HEPBUUUUUUUURN!

When I was in High School, one of my teachers joked around about the 'alternative' comments the teachers wished they could put on report cards rather than the generic 'needs more effort' and whatnot.
My personal favorite? "Too late for planned parenthood."

It's a girl named Maria whose ancestry is French-Canadian/Japanese/Scot and here is some trivia:
She plays the guitar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar).
Maria plays field hockey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_hockey).
She still has family and relatives in Canada.
She has a small scar near her right eyebrow.
She speaks, reads and writes fluent English.
She plays the online video game "Guild Wars".
She is a graduate of Christian Academy in Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Academy_in_Japan) (CAJ)

I learned Japanese originally from the JSL/JWL books by Eleanor Jordan... she uses the same screwed up romanization system mentioned a couple of times here, where ti is chi, si is shi, and zi is ji. Her argument is that it keeps it consistent with the rest of the table in romaji. Also, chotto is tyotto in her system.
Ugly.
