While "going to hell" might have been pushing it, I think it was a good idea. :D

Yes it was.

When I was a sophmore (soooo long ago it seems :() One of the teachers started choking a kid cuz he was late for the 4th time.

I think the Japanese idea was better.

Maybe this is an off guess, but I'm going to go ahead and say you just do not shit on someone's image like that. I think the worst thing he did was posting the thing with the kid's names on the hallway where everyone could see.

Maybe that's what made it a big deal. Then again, it doesn't mention if the guy was Japanese or foreign, but even native folk make cultural mistakes.

trueness, but they would probably ntoe if he was a foreigner. it would be a bigger deal.
I guess your right though about it being in Japan. i could definitely see it work in America though. Unless the wave of "dont do that cause it will ruin the childs psyche!!!!!!" wave has risen that far.
If thats the case, kill me now, cause if i ever have a child, i dont wanna think of what he'll grow into. sorry trailing off......

I thought it was odd that the complaint came from another teacher - I guess I am assuming the other teachers would be sympathetic to the problems caused by late students

But isn't that the point? You crap on their image so that the negative behavior will change, especially in Japan where peer pressure rules all.

I also see no problem with this. Does anyone know what the complaint was regarding his actions? Was it the fact that the teacher posted it or was it because it was posted in the hallway, etc.?

I really liked the idea of it all. But yeah, ridiculing your students like that really shouldn't be allowed.

The scale was genius, though.

My guess is crapping on someone's image in that public of a way, is bigger "no-no" than students being late (I don't know if he really called the parents but that's even worse). It's just a conflict of values. Maybe Americans are quicker to value change in students' behavior over a little humiliation? Perhaps in Japan people work so hard for face value, that it's quite rude to post "look at these idiots kids and here are their names" out in the hallways where everyone else can read as they please.

Just my thoughts.

Interestingly enough, if you did this at a middle school or even high school here, I doubt you'd get much results. Students would probably just use it as a cock-war over who's cooler.

I'm agreeing with kokujin in that making it public is not a good idea, but reading that "the teacher had good relations with this students", I'd say that it would have worked out swell in spite of a few disgruntled co-workers/parents.

And add another "aye" for "going directly to hell". When said in Japanese, it's more comedic than anything else. At least more comedic than being choked.

As far as what he did, I personally don't have much of a problem with it. If he really did have a good relationship with his students, and the students themselves didn't find it as crushing, then I say veto the parents if it gets their kids to show up to class on time.

Maybe there's some crazy phsycological long-term effects or something. Japanese schools are precautious as hell; who didn't know that?

So, besides sending them to hell, this teacher was a frustrated referee?.

I guess my whole problem with those who oppose the idea is that you are defending a negative behaviour. Making it public is a huge humiliation and an extreme one at that, but it probably worked. When compared to losing your job or other adult-related consequences, a little public humiliation seems quite insignificant.

Isn't the point of school (and parenting) to prepare your kids for adult life rather than coddle them?

You're not supposed to be late to class. The chart being public was a form of punishment for those who did something wrong. I really don't see the problem.
