A few hours a day? I'm not too surprised. I guess they keep the eyes "in shape", for lack of a better term.

I believe the problem has mainly been associated with repeated overdose of video games over a short period of time. That'll wear your eyes out and probably isn't too good for ya.

The title of the article is misleading.

Staring into any monitor or TV screen is not good for your eyes, no matter what is going on onscreen. There's a good reason they recommend that you take a 15 minute break every hour playing games on being on the computer in every single videogame manual EVER. I take a... "walk around the house a couple of seconds" break. My little sister tends to look at me like a freak for randomly getting up and wandering around when I was just typing or playing a game. *shrug*

It doesn't seem to be good for your eyes so much as it seems to be good for your visual cortex and associated areas.
