They call it "Can You Pass Third Grade?" It really is kind of fun, but I am curious how many Americans can actually place all 48 of the contiguous states, let alone do it within the time limit.

So can you pass third grade? (http://www.pibmug.com/files/map_test.swf)

Easy peasy stuff. Although for some reason it didn't seem to count the upper peninsula of Michigan.

Why aren't Alaska and Hawaii included on this quiz?

Kass
01-31-2007, 05:10 PM
Because those are easy to identify. The problems people have are with the contiguous states.

Yeah, I got Michigan wrong, I dragged it to the upper penninsula =(

I did it pretty quickly, though I was hazy about a couple, mainly because I haven't looked at a map of the US for quite some time.

I passed.

I always get AZ, NM, CO, and that other one in the square mixed up.

But I got all the states in the right places before time ran out. Winning FTW!

I got 20/48

LMAO fuck. Oh well, those 20 sates are the only one that matters anyways.

I got 10 ;P

But hey, I've never seen a map that shows states in any detail, not to mention never took "third grade".

Wow things sure have changed because I never learned to identify the 50 states until I was in the fifth grade.

I failed the test!

Okay I beat it the second time, but fitting the upper states took forever!

heh, I got washington and oregon mixed up, but other than that, I stilll remember where everything goes. It'd be harder if you had a map of canada and had to identify all the ... whatever they call em up there.

And Utah.

I just remember Arizona is closest to California and Utah is above it. After that it's easy to remember New Mexico bordering Mexico and Colorado is the one that looks like a horizontal rectangle.

I'll do this as soon as my batteries for my mouse finish charging.

I can place pretty much every country in the world where it belongs except for the African ones and those stupid Pacific island countries.

edit: Stupid Kansas and Nebraska. I did it with over half the time left but I will admit to placing Nebraska in Kansas' place. >_>

Your far from the first person to do that...

I got them all right except that I missed Delaware twice because I was in a hurry and I kept missing that damn little state.

I might have gotten more if it didn't take me so long to figure out how to do it.

In all my years at school, I've never ever been required to know all the states. ^_^ I still get confused if there are 50, 51, or 52. I always forget.

I worked from Virginia up and down the coast all the way over to the place where the Mississippi would be, then started on the West Coast.

Its not all that hard to do as long as you can remember a few key state locations.

I got all 50 states! yay! Er...the 48 on the quiz...I do know where Alaska and Hawaii are too thoguh:P
Had to think a minute about which was which with New Hampshire and Vermont though >_>
We had to know all 50 states and all the provinces of Canada by 6th grade. I have to think really hard to remember how Canada is laid out though ><

Rhode Island took the longest to place, only because it was so tiny. But, I guess being drilled in geography during elementary school helped, even over a decade later.

Tiny areas made me lose. Stupid East coast and their tiny ness! (lives in Ma. >_>; ) it was hard to place the thingy!

I couldn't do it within the time limit. But I know at least where 40 or more are. The middle area got me stuck for a bit. ;(

02-01-2007, 01:07 AM
I don't even remember half those states. I don't think I've ever met someone from Wyoming >_>; Jesus. I somehow, magically, knew Montana. I got 20 something the first time. The 6th time I got them all >_>; barely.

Daishikaze
02-01-2007, 01:10 AM
One of my old Middle school teachers liked to say "Wyoming doesn't exist". We'd ask him why he said that and his answer was "Have you ever met anyone from Wyoming?" the answer would always be "No", so maybe he was right? because I still haven't met anyone from there, nor do I know anyone who has. ;)

There was a test out there, perhaps posted here, which was a map of the US without outlines, and you had to drop all the states in. It would give you the distance you were wrong by, and a score at the end. Now THAT was hard.

Plekto
02-01-2007, 01:25 AM
Feh. As usual, the test is U.S. biased.

How about an adult test placing the provinces in China or even the countries in Europe? It's a pet peeve of mine about education in general - that it's always incredibly myopic in the areas of geography, politics, and history, no matter where you seem to grow up.

Find it. Now I am really interested in it and I'm afraid I will not be able to function until I try it.

I imagine it would be significantly easier if there were rivers, mountain ranges and lakes (well, more specifically Salt Lake so we can have an easy marker for the 4 corners states).

I took the one at sheppardsoftware.com and got a 90% with an average distance of 26 miles and it took me about 7 minutes. Not too shabby if I do say so myself but its probably because I took the original test Kass put up like 7 times trying to push the state locations into my head again.

seiji

I got 90% first try on the sheppardsoftware one too! But my average error was 31 miles, partly because I was a total idiot and tried to stick South Dakota on the Canadian border. :box:

And people wonder why Americans are so clueless about the world... We don't teach it anymore. :( This makes me VERY sad.

I had to know all the states, their postal abbreviations (old and new), their capitals and the major rivers byt fourth grade. By high school I had to be able to place all the European countries and their capitals as well. In college, I had to be able to place the states in Europe, the USSR (the wall fell that year), Africa and Asia as well as the capitals and major river systems for each.

I can still do pretty well on the rest of the world, but all the new countries that have formed since I had to learn them throw me off sometimes.

As for my World Geography skills, I like to think im pretty good at it. Elementary school was North America. Middle school was Africa, Asia, South America, and Oceania. Then in high school back to the US but more in depth and then extremely in depth on Europe. I can place each country in Europe as well as their capitals and major rivers. Not even the Balkans mess me up anymore. Do believe me when I say that the Balkans took me forever to get down.

Yeah, about the 5th time I did it, I got like 42 and it still said I failed XD. Mainly because the last 10 of them, I kept guessing :p. So originally, I know where about 30 of the states are. Geography was never taught to me in school except for a couple months in 7th grade when we had map quizzes for most major continents. Never a US one though.... I've never been taught US geography!

Apparently you can zoom in, but then there's the risk of dragging the map to the area you want to click without clicking on one of the countries.

Eastern Europe, the Russian non-Baltic Satellite States (created post-Geography for me, unfortunately), and f'ing islands in the middle of nowhere (I'm looking at YOU maldives!) are my weakness.

Most of which are either not studied in Geography, or have changed since I learned 'em.

Where the fuck did Western Sahara go? It used to be right next to Morocco!

And the Czech Republic vs. Slovakia? Which is which half of Czechoslovakia anyway?!

~stan (that means Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and whatever other ~stans there are down there), like I know the difference? You're all Soviets to this boy of the Cold War Geography era!
