View Full Version : Recommend me some good music

I'm pretty much tired of everything in my iTunes. I want some different music but can't really think of anything. So I'm asking for some recommendations you all may have. Help me expand my musical boundaries, or something like that.

My tastes...

I like alternative, and some rock. Nothing heavy. NO EMO. Some pop is tolerable. For example, I like Christina Aguilera's "What a Girl Wants"...but that's just about the only song of hers I like.

I like R&B, and some rap. Anything with a really good beat. My R&B/rap collection is pathetically small, so recommendations here would be highly appreciated.

I like Japanese music. ...Somewhat. NO ANIME MUSIC, WHATSOEVER. I'm not talking about a regular song that was used for an anime, like Pornograffiti's "Melissa" (Full Metal Alchemist), I mean the stuff that is blatantly anime. I don't like Ayumi Hamasaki, Ai Otsuka, Orange Range, Glay, Koda Kumi, or anyone along those lines so save those recommendations.

I'm especially interested in 90's music. I know there were a lot of great tunes but I just can't seem to remember them. Any good 90's music recommendations would also be awesome.

REM strikes me as a great 90's alternative band. I've got their CD "Automatic for the People (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_for_the_People)", it's consistently good all the way through.
Smashing Pumpkins are great as well. Their specific sound changes song to song, and they can be considering borderline emo, but they don't fit the typical musical style of most emo music. The album of theirs I recommend is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellon_Collie_and_the_Infinite_Sadness) (the name does not reflect the music within).
The Pillows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pillows) are a japanese band that were in an anime (they made the soundtrack to FLCL) but they're a great band on their own merits. http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/2205
Bush- Sixteen Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixteen_Stone). Lithium and Machine Head stand out as the best from this CD.
Filter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_%28band%29)- Title of Album. I don't really know the song names for this one. :P It's a good listen, though.
Finally, here's an indie music label that publishes their music online: http://magnatune.com/ They've got a great business style and additude compared to most labels, even other indie labels. Lots of music, too.

I hope my recommendations aren't totally off, but you expressed the desire to expand your musical boundaries, so here goes:

Jazz: I can recommend the new CD by Diana Krall 'From this moment on' and 'The girl in the other room'. She has a great voice.
http://www.amazon.com/This-Moment-Diana-Krall/dp/B000GG4KTU/sr=1-1/qid=1169386508/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7394870-2560963?ie=UTF8&s=music

Pop, soft jazz: Might be too mellow for what you stated, but I like Norah Jones. On tuesday a new Album of hers will be out here in Japan (rest of the world one week later...) 'Come away with me' and 'Feels like home' are very nice.

As a Swiss, I should also mention a recent CD by the godfathers of Techno, Yello:
http://www.amazon.com/Eye-Yello/dp/B00070Q7X2/sr=1-1/qid=1169386712/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7394870-2560963?ie=UTF8&s=music

You can listen to some of their music on their homepage http://yello.ch/

90's music: Queen- Innuendo

This century: Diana Anaid - 'Beautiful obscene'

Personally I listen to classical music a lot (Mostly Bach, Beethoven, Haendel, Mozart...) ,
I don't know wheter some suggestions there could interest you...

A CD I'm listening to very often since I bought it a few weeks ago is Hilary Hahn, Violin Concertos by Paganini and Spohr. Her play on the violin is really virtuous, the CD is a real joy to listen to.
http://www.amazon.com/Paganini-Violin-Concerto-No-Spohr/dp/B000G04RKS/sr=8-1/qid=1169386434/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7394870-2560963?ie=UTF8&s=music

If you are interested in more suggestions of classical music, I can post them, but won't put any more here, if that's too far out from your intended field of discovery ;-) ;-) ;-)

theres plenty of great 90s hiphop out there. think of groups like public enemy and shit like that, and youve got great stuff to work with. 90s beastie boys is great stuff, if you like a bit of a rock edge to your rap. hiphop tends have some real gems that are never really known. i'm a big fan of team rezofficial, which happens to be a native hiphop group in canada. good stuff, but not exactly the most popular genre. i also listen to some korean hiphop, but that's mostly limited to drunken tiger and their crew, like cb mass and dynamic duo. jurassic five is a great group with classic hiphop style. i really like jamiroquai, as i'm a huge fan of funk. his last two albums are really good, imho. he really starts to take a turn to funk in those albums.

Captain Jack, Scooter, e-type are good, Azrael. They are 90s and have lots of bass beat. and they will totally widen your music taste.

Btw. isn't Queen 70s/80s? Freddie Mercury died 1991?

Ill list a few that i like. Have you tried the Nujabes? most people will know them as the guys who did the samurai champloo anime music, but i think its an exception from what you listed in your first post. their cd, metaphorical music, is pretty good. heres a sample(dont mind the video part). LAdy Brown (http://youtube.com/watch?v=QxHQKUNxzsA&mode=related&search=)
their music for samurai champloo is pretty good also. its just their beats and no singing. very mellow and a good listen. Example here: Aruarian Dance (http://youtube.com/watch?v=T2w-SMW_nSE&mode=related&search=)
another is くるり. here's one of their earlier song. Sadly, i cant find it on any of theri cd's i have. also, the american drummer left. すけべな女の子 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fTrc46AYn8E)
they're not so rock any more. their team rock album is my favorite, cause its more mellow.

the last band ill recommend is Going Under Ground.
Twilight (http://youtube.com/watch?v=0e4EdbWO-os)
if you watch the video, you'll notice that they dont really repeat their music much. their song constantly changes, even if only a little. their h.o.p.s. cd is pretty good, but all their cds have parts.
thats all i have for now. btw i will second fort minor's the rising tied cd.
hope it helps, bud.

Edited for neatness :hphone:

90's...alternative?

-Nirvana: Nevermind, In Utero
-Pearl Jam: Ten
-REM: Out of Time
-U2: War, Joshua Tree, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
-Radiohead: Kid A, Amnesiac. Creep may be a bit too emo for ya ;)

I'm sure you have their music already but juuuust in case.

I guess you could also try the later Guns n' Roses. Though Appetite for Destruction is their biggest album, Use Your Illusion 1&2(double album) has some great melodic stuff like Don't Cry, November Rain and Knockin' on Heaven's Door(best cover of Dylan's imo).

I like Pink Floyd but you may not.

First, here's a russian website that gives you all 2 "Free legal mp3 downloads a day per email account" for you all to get music from (you have to copy the promo codes and click a link to get to the download page).

It's as "legal" as a russian MP3 site can be, so use it as you all think you should and mods please remove if you don't think it's appropriate:

www.delit.net

ANYONE ELSE WHO KNOWS A SITE LIKE THIS PLEASE LIST IT, as long as it's of the "legal" kind.

ALSO, you should really try Pandora out Az, you put in one song you like and they play a lot of similar songs they think you might like. You can surprise yourself a lot.

How recent of music do you have Az? That's what we really need to know to recommend you "new" music :gloomy:

Now I went through my mp3 collection for this, so nobody give me to much of a hard time, k? :box:

I like alternative, and some rock. Nothing heavy. NO EMO. Some pop is tolerable. For example, I like Christina Aguilera's "What a Girl Wants"...but that's just about the only song of hers I like.

4) Dexter Freebish - "Leaving Town"
5) Jason Mraz - "The Remedy"

16) Weezer - "Island in the sun," "Gone Fishing," "Hash Pipe," "Beverly Hills"
17) Yellow Card - "Ocean Avenue"
18) Dashboard Confessional - "Vindicated"
19) Jimmy Eat World - "In the middle"
20) Santana - "Smooth"

I like R&B, and some rap. Anything with a really good beat. My R&B/rap collection is pathetically small, so recommendations here would be highly appreciated.

CHINGY! Sorry, I JUST read that editorial and had to throw it in for laughs.

1) Jay-Z- "Show me what you got"
2) Nelly Furtado- "Say it right" (Almost anything with Nelly Furtado is hot right now)
3) Usher - You make me wanna REMIX ft. Timberland (honestly, one of the hottest tracks I've heard in a LONG while)
4) Common - "Testify"
5) Eric Serman ft. Marvin Gaye - "Music"
6) Fort Minor - "Remember the name" and "Where'd you go?"
7) Jellestone - "Money."
8) Joe Ft. Mystikal - "Studder"
9) Knoc-turn'al - "Muzik" (that is, if you can stand to listen to it again after "the trasnporter")
10) Ludacris ft. Bobby Valentino - "Pimpin all over the world" (come on, any abroad guy has to get this song)
11) Mary J Blige - "Be Without You."
12) Matisyahu - "King without a crown" (although this is more reggae)
13) Mos Def - "OH NO"

20) Outkast - "I like the way you move"
21) R Kelly - "Ignition REMIX" (still a chill song...from a pee freak)
22) Rhianna - "SOS" and "Break it off" ft. Sean Paul
23) Talib Kweli - "Get By." and the remix
24) Wyclef Jean - "Gone to November"

27) Baby Bash - "Sugar Sugar" and "Baby I'm Back."
28) Big Pun - "I'm not a playa"
29) Cypruss Hill - "Rock Superstar"
30) Snoop - "Beautiful"

I'm especially interested in 90's music. I know there were a lot of great tunes but I just can't seem to remember them. Any good 90's music recommendations would also be awesome.

1) Blues Traveler - "Runaround."
2) Counting Crows - "Big Yellow Taxi"
3) Craig David - "Seven Days" and "Fill me in REMIX"
4) Eagle Eye Cherry - "Save Tonight" (was this in the 90s?)

9) Michael Jackson (back in the day, he was King) - "Bad" "Billy Jean" "Smooth Criminal" "The way you make me feel" "SCREAM" "You rock my world" (granted most of these are NOT from the 90s)
10) Oasis - "Wonderwall"
11) Seal - "Kissed by a rose on the grave"
12) Smashmouth - "Allstar"
13) Sublime - "Wrong Way."
14) The Proclaimers - "I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)"
15) Verticle Horizon - "Everything you want"
16) Will Smith - "Miami."
17) Aerosmith - "Crazy," "Dude looks like a lady," "Walk this way" (and the remix)," "I don't wanna miss a thing) [Again, some of this may not actually be from the 90s)
18) Blessid Union of Souls - "I believe"
19) Marc Cohn - "Walking in Memphis"
20) REM - "It's the end of the world as we know it"

CLASSICS

The movie is great too.

Also, I Suggest The Beatles. (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_m/104-7221123-7337518?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=the+beatles&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go) You can pick about any cd. 3 of them on are currently on Amazon's bestseller's list (if you don't count the Cirque du Soliel mix, then it would be 5).

If you like to dance or maybe your girl does, Basement jaxx (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_m/104-7221123-7337518?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=basement+jaxx&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go) will always do the trick.

I've gotta throw in my support for R.E.M. and Smashing Pumpkins. "Drive" by R.E.M. and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins are both great songs.

Damien Rice isn't bad.. he has some mainly chill music, but I like it a lot. Another band I love are The Flaming Lips. They're probably a little odd by most people's tastes, but if you listen to their stuff it realy isn't bad. I would avoid their first few CDs they ever made, though. Yoshimi Batles the Pink Robots and The Soft Bulletin are two of their better CDs, in my opinion.

Off the top of my head I'm too lazy to come up with anything else so I'll leave it at that.

But not without a plug for Dave Matthews Band, Dispatch, and State Radio :p The first two are my two favorite bands, and the third is a band formed by the leader of Dispatch after they broke up. Anything by Dispatch is good [but the Gut the Van CD is a good one to have], and all of Dave's stuff as well... but I prefer Before These Crowded Streets, Crash, etc. Weekend on the Rocks is a great CD of theirs, too.

I will recommend from Rock and Roll....FROM AUSTRALIA!!!!

I didnt see WOLFMOTHER mentioned once in this thread.

Wolf Mother is a new Australian rock band that is taking the entire rock and roll world by storm, like AC/DC (Another Aussy and World Icon) they are amazing.

What else from Australia is good?

Silverchair
Powderfinger
Grinspoon
The Vines
The Whitlams (They named themselves after Gough Whitlam a former PM)
Bee Gees (THATS RIGHT WIKIPEDIA IT!)
INXS
Kisschasey (Maybe a lil Emocore though for the all mighty Az)
and defo's AC/DC

Australian Rock is great, always has been.

I would slap some other band names in there but meh.

Somehow aquire this song please

"OPM - Heaven is a Halfpipe"

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - Redhead Kelly

They're an alterantive J-Rock band, relativley good; they are somewhat borderline grunge. Redhead Kelly will give you an idea of what their music is like.

Muse - City of Delusion

They can be considered a little alt rock with a mix of emo. They have some great songs but they do also have tracks that sound borderline emo, but also not really. It's hard to explain, check out City of Delusion, like as above, it'll give you an idea of what their style is like.

I can't recommend much more then that as my tastes are different from what you're looking for and everyone already mentioned some really great bands. I'm not sure how you are on german rock, but if you want to give it a chance.

Rammstein - Heirate Mich

Enjoy, if you like, I'll list some more great tracks from them.

My Bay Area hip-hop recommendations: (Yes, they get thier own category)

Go to http://www.music-map.com/ and type in an artist you like. Click "Continue" and you're off to a world of enlightenment. The closer the bands are to the one you typed in, the more similar are they. I've discovered several great bands thanks to this nifty site.

Or alternatively go to http://www.pandora.com/ and listen to music that is similar to what you like. You have to create an account though (not very complicated), and you can only skip a certain amount of songs within an hour or something like that, but you can rate the songs, improving your online stations as time goes on.

SIAM SHADE! 90's j-rock. They did 「1/3の純情な感情」 from the 「るろうに剣心」 soundtrack. Broke up a few years ago, so now it's almost impossible to find anything but their singles collection "Siam Shade IX A-side collection", but I'd be glad to send you a copy of whatever I have. The members have gone on to individual projects, which are worth a listen if you like the band.

Reading comprehension ftl, eh?:duh: I'm not getting into this, but if you don't consider some of Muse's music borderline Emotional Rock, that is your own world you wish to live in, I still like them regardless of what stereotype they fit or don't.

Anyway, I almost forgot about mentioning Mars Volta. Great band, De-Loused In The Comatorium is one of their better Albums, A Missing Chromosome is also rather good if you decide you like the former.

Dude, wtf? Chill.
You're not even insulting me correctly.

I had no problem comprehending what you wrote.
I just don't understand how you came to that conclusion.

I love Muse and I'm quite familiar with their music. If you look above, you can see I reccomneded them as well. Having listened to them and reading as many articles as I can about them, I've never thought or seen them described as such.

So I'm asking you--the one who described as a bit emo--why you think so. That idea is a bit puzzling to me. I was wondering if you might explain it.

I'm quite chilled, especially today since it snowed quite a bit. Anyway, my bad if I came off a bit strong or insulting, wasn't my intention at all honestly, it was more of an apathetic response as I didn't feel like straying off-topic, and I'm scared of Az.

As to why I called them somewhat Emo, it's like I said, some of their tracks just come off as such. Emo music today has lost it's meaning anyway, what exactly does define a song or band as Emo? I sure as hell can't explain it, but going by the term Emo as in the style kids seem to have picked up today, whining and crying on a song? I don't know, a lot of Rock bands do that today, but they're still not classified as such. Micro Cuts from Muse would be my example of a somewhat Emo style that I'm used to hearing, Endlessly is also another one. They're just mellowed out songs that convey a lot of Emotion to me, and as such; I classified it as somewhat Emo.

I probably have a skewed idea of what really is Emo music because I seriously never took the term seriously, I pretty much still love every single thing done by Muse :hphone:

I like R&B, and some rap. Anything with a really good beat. My R&B/rap collection is pathetically small, so recommendations here would be highly appreciated.

This is a very wide category and subject to a lot of interpretation. I, for example, like 'rap'. Having said that, I haven't liked the vast majority of the stuff that's come out in the last few years - it's a completely different sound than the stuff that got me into the genre (even leaving aside the issue of whether you think rap should have some kind of real meaning other than "I have lots of money, cars and women...yo.")(see Public Enemy, Ice-T, Ice Cube, etc.)

But hey, it doesn't all have to be politics. For some nice, easy listening stuff, I heartily recommend Cypress Hill's 'Black Sunday'.

Uh, all music could be considered Emo, since most artists sing with EMOTION, yes?

however, Muse doesn't fit in the genre of Emo. At all.

I recommend Muse, the Strokes, and The Shins. You went to UC Davis, you'll like the Strokes. /end generalization

If you want to expand your boundaries, try Haggard. It's symphonic metal.... very good music. Symphonic as the band has > 15 members and uses a lot of musical instruments.

Haggard is a German symphonic metal band founded in 1991. Haggard combines folk, classical, renaissance and medieval music with modern doom metal.

I have heard that the Cardigans are labeled as 'alternative' rock .. so you might give them a try.

But, heres a pretty good sounding group. three big brazilian singers got together to make an album as the Tribalistas. its a self titled album. the only place i could find this was online, but after listening to the following song while watching a Kaka(the soccer player) montage, i needed the cd. Heres one of their songs called Ja Sei Namorar

Alternative, some rock, Japanese, some pop, 90's music and R&B/rap, huh?

Well, I can suggest a few classic rock, pop rock and alt. bands/artists. Gunna take a little bit of a liberty and toss some progressive and experimental rock in, as well.

Alan Parson Project
Nirvana (the good, UK Nirvana from the 60's)
Badfinger
The Edgar Winter Group
Faces
Golden Earring
Captain Beefheart - Very experimental. Try at your own risk. =0
Procol Harum
Uriah Heep
R.E.M.
Talking Heads
Sugarloaf
Supertramp

Hope that helps.

"Ohhhh baby I wanna get witcha'

But that butt you got makes me so horny!
OOH rubber smooth skin, you say you wanna get in my benz?
Well use me, use me, 'cause you ain't that average groupie!

Well, here's what I came up with after exploring my iTunes, which tends to be a rather scary place.

The All-American Rejects
The Allman Brothers Band (Southern rock okay?)
Anna Nalick
Avenue Q (It's Broadway, but hilarious.)
Bastard Fairies
Beck
Blues Traveler (I know you didn't mention the blues, but I'm too in love with them to not mention it.)
Bree Sharp
Brownsville Station
Buck Tick (This doesn't count as anime, does it? If it does, I'm sorry.)
Christian Kjellvander
Cross Canadian Ragweed (More rock than country. They have a great tribute song to Dimebag Darrell, too.)
Damien Rice ("Rootless Tree" is a good 'you done pissed me off for the last time' song.)
Dropkick Murphys
Editors
Ghost of the Robot
Gov't Mule
Grinspoon
Head Automatica
Heather Nova
Iggy Pop (How can you not love this guy? If not him, at least "Lust For Life".)
Jack Off Jill
James Marsters (Good singer, so don't write him off.)
Jim Byrnes
Joe Bonamassa
Joe Walsh
Johnny Cash
Jonny Lang
Juanes
Kenna
Los Lonely Boys (More rock than country again, so I'll leave it up to you.)
Love Spit Love
Mr. Big
The Offspring
Placebo
Powederfinger
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Though you're probably sick of "Dani California".)
Ryan Adams
Scissor Sisters (Check out "I Can't Decide" especially. Hilarious.)
Spiderbait
Thrice
Tonic
The Von Bondies
Wolfmother

Hope that helps. :) If nothing else, research the bands on Wikipedia, most of 'em have pages.

Metallica, not as metal as a lot of bands, but definately enough rock to keep you awake.

Shine Down, I just like their music, I don't know why.

Billy Joel, Classic great

Jimmy Buffet, talk about care free music, I can just sit and listen to it for a while and it makes me feel happier.

None of those are emo in the least (at least the songs I have heard)

the list goes on....

This is the kind of thread I always end up discovering new music from.... it's the best thing about the "long tail" and music.... before u had to read in a magazine or hunt around in a record store to find something cool -- which made the choices always subject to the "gatekeeping" of editors and music store buyers and etc... -- which would lead inevitably to mediocrity and the prevalence of "poser music" -- i.e. stuff that you want to like because you think it's cool, not because you really like it. Music journalism especially creates high-profiles for really lame stuff, because journalists are always looking behind their backs, trying to profile something that they think in 2 years people will think they were cool for liking "way back when".... I GREATLY prefer the democratic nature of threads like these, where people simply list their tastes and you can just look something up on itunes or youtube and check it out for yourself....

These days I'm really into techno and techno/rock and stuff like that -- try searching for these songs:

Thomas Falke "Revolution On The Dance Floor"
Groove Cutter "My Shooter"
Control One "Just A Little Bit"
Ian Carey "Redlight"
Kevin Weg "Dead Radio"

I don't usually go for techno but these are sort of like a weird crossover between rock and techno/trance.
