American 28 years old woman takes part in "Hold your wee for Wii"-competition and dies of water intoxication at home.
Let's talk about who will get sued because of this death and also about why do radio shows need to hold rather dangerous and stupid competitions.
Personally I think the radio station is a little responsible as they encouraged people to consume a a potentially fatal liquid(wikipedia's deadly rate is on low sodium diet 1.8 litres/hour, normal diet 3 litres/hour), but the woman did drink it voluntarily.
Nintendo shouldn't be sued as it isn't their fault that the radio station was so childish ("wii is almost like wee! teeheehee!!").

hyponatremia i believe it's called eh... can be a common problem for endurance athletes - hence the introduction of salt tablets...
on a side note - probably wouldn't have happened if it were gatorade or something... heh.. sucks tho...
:( It said in the end she was doing it for her kids. This was a stupid contest. >.<
"Jennifer Strange died for 'Hold Your Wee For Wii'".....
Sorry, but that sounds like a hell of an epitaph.
The radio station gave an 8 ounce bottle for every 15 minutes, and even larger ones later on- if they were doing a contest like this, they should've thought that there might be some consequences, and at least consult a doctor or something. Of course, can't expect it for a station that came up with "Hold your wee for Wii".
I propose mandatory classes to educate people about water intoxications. Both the radio show and the participants are morons to partake in this sort of activity.

Of course, if they had been aware of this, they would have changed it to a sportsdrink(good sponsorship op?) or given her 3-4 tablespoons of salt afterwards. Your body will re-equalize its salt levels in minutes and it's easy to tell when you have had enough - you can't stand it anymore.
Well, this definately is going to be in this years Darwin Awards I think. Sad way to die. OTOH, it will help to raise awareness.
Also - yes - Gatorade wasn't made with this in mind, but it was changed over the years to be saltier for this reason. Drink as much as you want - you'll not die due to excess fluid intake.(though other side effects might happen - lol) Even many fitness waters nowadays have some salt added. They probably chose distilled water in addition, which makes the problem worse.
P.S. masive migranes not caused by stress or exertion(blood pressure) are almost always a sign that your electrolyte levels are way off.(or water levels, but it's rare for people to die of dehydration while going about their normal daily activities these days)
Never knew there was an opposite to salt poisoning before (though I know from experience that the only difference between it and alcohol poisoning is that the former burns like hell...hehehe...).
Would it be too morbid to wonder if her kids got the Wii in the end?

My local radio station does dangerous stunts all the time. >_>; But never with the listeners. Only with the radio show staff. Last year they even called their stunt week "Kill Casey".

Dammit, now they are going to need warning labels on water.

:bang: Oh come on, now this is getting a little ridiculous (as if it wasn't enough already).
Look, these people were consuming a lot of water, THAT'S IT. While their intention might not have been killing someone, they did. Regardless, you're gonna ask for a class about WATER CONSUMPTION now?
Look, a woman died for a stupid reason and in a rather odd way. Just because ONE did doesn't mean people have to start freaking out about WATER CONSUMPTION now :duh:
Maybe I'm choosing to be ignorant on it, but I for one wont let one little freak case like this make me paranoid about something so trivial. :hphone:

Most people are unaware that drinking so much water, so fast, without evacuation, can be deadly. They just think it would be hugely uncomfortable.
However, I do blame the radio station for their ignorance about the dangers. Considering they are a business, part of a company, and conducting the contest, they should research all possible dangers around their competitions--if only to prevent any damage to themselves.

Radio stations are supposed to have lawyers that look at all of their contests. At least I think they are.

I'm pretty sure these hosts knew about the danger of water intoxication. I'm willing to bet on it. Why else would they warn the contestants to stop if they felt their health was at risk?
They should be charged with involuntary manslaughter and jailed.

I guess those hippies on the show "Bullshit" that signed the petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide were right on the money.
Even if you don't die, drinking a lot and not peeing is bad for your bladder and kidneys.
I can't think of a more humiliating way to die--water intoxication for a stupid video game console.
