Sometimes I feel as if I'm floating through a world void of linear music with no open improv. The I discovered its mostly true. I turned to jazz and bebop. Its a way of life which needs to be nutured with music and knowledge. Whos with me?

Name your favorite musicians. I'll lay down some of the basics.
Parker and dizzy
Itchy Fingers
Mingus
Miles Davis
Seatbelts
Sonny Rollins
I could list hundreds if not thousands of artists.
please contribute your love of jazz.

Some of my favorites have already been mentioned so I wont bother repeating them:

Archie Shepp
James Blood Ulmer
Charlie Hunter
Ornette Coleman
Gene Ammons
The Skatalites ( Ok, so they are ska, but tell me those mother fucking break-downs are not jazz through and through.)

I love ska. I don't care if you add them. I'm looking for expansion to my play list. I'm already up to a week of continous music.

You guys pretty much narrowed it down, but I will make this tiny contribution...

The soundtrack for Cowboy Bebop has some nice jazz and bebop. It deserves mentioning.

It is. The intro is great, of course. Then I like to relax to that Cat Blues one (might be the wrong name).

The Rippingtons
Herb Alpert
Keiko Matsui, though, she's a little more "smooth" jazz, not for everyone...
Lawrence Juber
Echo on the Thelonius...

Have a couple of them on scattered sharings from back when.

The intro is tank! I have the sheet for that and can point you to it. Cat blues is good but rushis awesome.

Oh yeah Rush. That's the chase scene one, right? And I knew Tank!

What instrument is the sheet for though?

A good amount of the music from CB is from Yoko Kanno + The Seatbelts. Just thought I'd toss that out there.

That is true. And they are great, aren't they?

The Seatbelts own my soul.

If you like ska/semi-ska, check out The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

The Rascal King is one of their best songs, though Royal Oil and ya know, everything else they right, is pretty kick ass too.

Re: Cowboy Bebop OST...

Anyone ever hear the song "Is It Real?" from the movie soundtrack? Actually, it's not on the full soundtrack, but it's the B-track on the single released for it. I love that song (and it's perfectly in my range, so I sing it all the time).

But man, Kanno Yoko is such a great musician.

Nevertheless, I can't believe nobody's mentioned Dave Brubeck!!!

Hmm I'm not too sure which genre he goes under but the KOS songs I've heard have all been jazzy, he makes every part of the music too, all the instruments and that.

Miles Davis ("Someday My Prince Will Come" and "All Blues" are great songs)
John Coltrane ("Giant Steps" and "Syeda's Song Flute" are my faves)
Dizzy Gillespie ("Night in Tunisia" and "Manteca" are my faves)
Duke Ellington ("Satin Doll" and "Perdido" are great, but more of a big band sound)
Wynton Marsalis (I like his Standards of Time series)

And of course since everyone's mentioned her, Yoko Kanno. I like her Cowboy Bebop soundtracks ("Tank!", "Farewell Blues", "Sax Quartet", "The Singing Sea", "Clutch", "Piano Black", "Road to the West", and "NY Rush" all are great jazz songs). There's one jazz song on Macross Plus that Yoko Kanno did called "Nomad Soul" that is also a noteworthy tune.

Not to rant or take us off subject, but in general any soundtrack Yoko Kanno does rules. Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus, Tenku no Escaflowne: 'nuff said.

full band score. Nice arrangement. You might of missed it though and he could of taken it down. If you want to play melody you could always transpose it.

I agree with you. Screw passive listening with jazz. You have to be active. keep it exciting. move dive.
