Not sure if this belongs here or in ATJ, but I thought it was a bit ironic when I came across this story while I was eating a cup of instant ramen =/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6237013.stm

I don't know what college kids would have done without his invention.

Thats funny, I just heard that on the radio a couple minutes ago. To bad. He was such a genius. Instant noodles, every broke college students food.

I always have some ramen in my cupboard just in case. Cool that the inventors motivation was to produce cheap food for the masses.

It comes in threes
=/ I learned that the hard way. I lost 3 close family members in 8 months once. My Great Grandma, my Grandma, and my Uncle Steve.

R.I.P. Ramen guy, may your soul forever float along in a noodly fashion in which you would have wanted it.

Aww, :( 93 though, wow.. I wonder if he ate the noodles often?

I've been betraying the noodles as of late since I can get spaghettios for nearly the same price :( I'm a bad person.

From the article:

Mr Ando remained active until just days before his death, giving a New Year's speech to Nissin employees and having a lunch of Chicken Ramen with company executives.

I thought it was so cool that even though he was rich as hell, he still ate instant ramen.

Wow, I just found from those links that instant ramen didn't magically/chemically heat up when you opened the cup. Yeah, not many ramen eaters here in Finland :P

That was a very interesting article. It's great to know that he lived to such an old age. I'm eating a pork Maruchan cup of noodles right now in his honor! It's quite ironic. When I went grocery shopping the other day, I picked up some cup of noodles. I haven't done that in a long long while because I ate them too much when I lived in the dorms and got very sick of them for a couple years. How ironic.

Rest in peace, Ando-san.

Josh

Im not in college yet and instant noodles are still a staple of my diet lol. I buy them in bulk boxes of 36 packs. :D

So... how do the instant noodles work?

Boil water. Add to noodles. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Stir in spice packet that comes with the noodles. Eat.

A very easy and cheap meal.

So ramen works the same way as rice-a-roni and Pasta-roni? >_>
I make Pasta-roni a lot. ^_^

cup of noodles works like that too, but even easier. You just put in boiling water into the styrofoam cup (and it has to be boiling, or VERY HOT to work), keep the lid closed(I usually use a fork), and let them cook for several mins. The instant noodles that come in the plastic can be used as a snack to eat without cooking it. Several asian snacks are pieces of salty instant noodles. they're yum too.

Ando's creation allowed me to get through University without selling my body to pay for food. Cheap and easy Instant noodles saved me!
And for that, I will always be grateful.

Uh, Maruchan != Nissin.

You're eating noodles not created by the dead man in question. Noodle traitor.

Sad. OTOH, that his food saves a lot of starving students and such... That was *exactly* his idea.

After WWII, during the reconstruction, there were massive food lines(soup kitchens, but serving ramen instead of something liek we have in the U.S.). So he had the idea of making cheap food that you could make anywhere.

Good for him! :) And, yes, short of the stuff you get at a Chinese market(look for the *big* paper cup/bowl ones the size of about 4 Cup Noodles), the best is Nissin.

Btw - get the ones from the Chinese markets if you can. Paper won't rot your brain like styrofoam will.(some leeches out due to the hot water, but not NEARLY what it originally did).

Well, that's instant. Japan makes some amazing packaged stuff, though. This requires a stove, though, but it tastes much better. About $1 a package.(still drit cheap)

http://www.americanspice.com/
Do a search for "soup greens"
This is a super easy way to turn normal ramen into something better in a few seconds.(simmilar to what you get in a typical $1-2 large bowl noodles form the Chinese market)

Best Ramen in Los Angeles is right across from the Kinokuniya bookstore in Little Tokyo - up a level on the south side of the complex. Word of wrning - Cheff's Special #2 is no fun. It literally stained the bowl it came in it was so hot. But best ramen, to be sure.(good beer, too)

Fantastic place!

Gotta love Ramen. We'll miss you, Ando.

Recipe for cheesy ramen:

Prepare ramen as usual but do not add the seasoning packet. Instead drain the water and lay a slice or two of american cheese on top. once it has melted some, stir and enjoy.

I have a different version of cheesy ramen... it involves some more things.

Drain water, add milk in and let set on side (don't cook the milk)... melt two or three slices of cheese in the microwave, mix with some ranch dressing in a bowl, add back to the milk-ramen, and then let THAT sit. Add parmesan cheese if you wanna be really creative. xD

That cheesy ramen recipe actually sounds pretty good Riinuka! I might have to try it.
