So that time of year is upon us again. Snow is falling, new years resolutions are already being forgotten, and those legendary, hilarious comercials that air during the superbowl are about to make their debut. Of course, anybody who calls him/herself an American knows that the Super Bowl host some of the best comercials on earth.

So, I found an interesting site- http://promotions.yahoo.com/doritos/index.php
- which not only gives us a preview for some of these grandiose comercials (this time affiliated with Doritos), but also allows us to vote for them and influence what we will see on game day.

I personally thought the first one on the far left, "check out girl" was the best. They are all really great, though.

Um...its not "comercial(s)" its commercial(s).

Hm...the states have pretty good commercials but other countries get to have the weirdest. I haven't checked out the site out yet. Cause I don't what to spoil the only time I watch the superbowl.

Wiki to the rescue!

One of the conditions of the AFL-NFL Merger was that the winners of each league's championship game would meet in a contest to determine the "world champion of football". According to NFL Films President Steve Sabol, then NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle wanted to call the game "The Big One". [citation needed] During the discussions to iron out the details, AFL founder and Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt had jokingly referred to the proposed interleague championship as the "Super Bowl." Hunt thought of the name after seeing his daughter playing with a toy called a Super Ball. The ball is now on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The name was feasible because postseason college football games had long been known as "bowl games" (the term originates from the Rose Bowl Game, which was in turn named for the bowl-shaped stadium in which it is played). Hunt only meant his suggested name to be a stopgap until a better one could be found. Not having thought of one, the owners named the contest the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Not surprisingly, fans and media tended to use the shorter, unofficial name. Starting with the third contest in January 1969, the name "Super Bowl" became official. (The previous two games were retroactively re-christened as Super Bowls I and II.)

And very few Americans know this, in case you're wondering. At least I didn't.

Yeah, Lamar Hunt was in the news a while back because he passed away.... I never watch the Super Bowl because football has never interested me.

The reported cost of a 30 second commercial during this year's super bowl will be $2.6 million.

I always thought that the Super Bowl was named after a bowl shaped stadium XD My bad, must have been confused with the Rose Bowl...

But yeah. I love superbowl commercials, but I think Lewis Black said it best...

"These super bowl commercials are ridiculous! They have no meaning to them whatsoever! Three bunnies are sitting on a log. One goes home and hangs himself. Buy a bike!"

World champion of football?

Ridiculous. U.S. of A & Canada are not "the world".. and it's big deal having world championship in a sport no one else plays... ( almost. According to wiki, there 6 teams in Europe. Some in Japan.. )

It's like how the "world series" is only the USA and Canada... even though Japan and PR have some of the best players XD

In those leagues, they also feature Americans/Canadians who play to get fundamentals down (or another reason that would prevent them from playing MLB or NFL), just to come back here. Those who play, play to get here, not to go over there. It's understandable though, because these are American based games. That isn't always the case, but I would say a majority of the players do if given the opportunity. After all, the big money to play would be here.

Super Bowl commercials are pretty good for the most part. I enjoy them. The price tag for some of them is ridiculous. I watch the actual game if it's a team I am rooting for or a team I really hate (hoping they lose).
