View Full Version : Mittens fucks up his sleeping pattern.

In light of new years, I attempted an all nighter and failed miserably. I ended up goin to sleep at 3pm, and I've woken up now at 10pm. Throughout december, I would be goin to sleep at REALLY stupid times (Depending on what I was doing the next day).
If I had school the next day, I'd end up goin to sleep at about 3am (school for me is at 8:50, but it takes an hour to get there). If I had nothin the next day, I'd be goin to sleep at 6 or 7am and wake up at 4 or 5pm.
I wanna know if anyone can give me any tips to set my sleeping pattern straight, cos this is really takin the piss. In b4 barrel roll, pooper, tits etc
The only way I've ever been able to break my terrible sleeping habits is by staying up all night and staying up well into the next evening.
Like yesterday, I woke up at about 2:30pm and stayed up until about 5pm today. I mean, its not a fun method to do and can be somewhat hard if you arent used to it, but it always works.
Unless you are like me and you can go forver on a couple hours sleep and your dog loves to bark its friggin head off like crazy. I went to sleep at 5pm and now its 8pm. But yeah, just make sure there isnt anything that will wake you up and it will work.
EDIT: Yeah, I notice if I fall asleep before a certain time, I cant sleep through the night and end up waking up at like 9 or 10 and that blows. You just have to put in the effort to stay up until at least 5 or 6pm.

Why don't you try keeping a more steady sleep schedule. Set an alarm clock for one time and get up at that time every day. If you're still dead tired when you get up, then go to bed a little earlier. You don't need a bed time like a little child, but you do need to make sure you're getting enough sleep to function properly.

yeah, I'd do Josh's method. or else you can fall into your normal sleeping patterns when school comes back, however this is a more slow method. If you stay up all night , when you finally go to bed, you'll be all tired out and voila you should be back to normal. It's always worked for me... I just never do it on purpose >_<. I have a chance of getting REALLY depressed if I stay up too much :p.

1 Unisom at 9 pm.
And hope that it doesn't fuck up your tomorrow if you slept till mid afternoon.
29th: Wake up at 1pm. Listen to a friends radio show until 8am. Decide it's not worth sleeping and keep someone else up on Skype (Hah.)
30th: Listen to another radio show until 4am. Try to sleep. Fail. End up sleeping much later from 2pm - 6pm and then stay up all night.
31st: Go to sleep at 10am. Wake up at 2pm. Stay up til 3am. Wake up at 7pm.
Do I win yet?

Have you tried the "Over The Counter" method? It usually consists of one of the two following choices. Drink some Nite Quill or pop the Benydrill!
*Use a direct, consult a doctor if you have heart of liver problems. Do not consume if you drink more than two serving of alcohol a day.

Alcohol is usually good for getting rid of insomnia.

Couldn't that possibley become a dependency/addition? Well so could Nite Quill & Benydrill, which reminds me, I need to put that on my shopping list since I am running low.

Only if you let it. Honestly, when I screw up my sleep schedule, the easiest way for me to fix is to take a few shots of liquor or glasses of wine an hour or two before I want to sleep.
Besides, the massive alcohol content of Nyquill is what makes it so damn effective. Might as well go straight to the source--at least it's cheaper and tastier.

I know how you feel... the past few days I've been going to bed later and later... or earlier, depending on how you look at it. It's 12:21PM here and I'm going to go to sleep in a few minutes. I went to bed at Noon or so yesterday, and woke up at 9:30PM. >_<

Angelyne's method is actually an old wive's cure from my family...only we used warm sake. It doesn't work on me anymore, though.
Mittens, I have the exact same sleep pattern as you. As of now, I'm fighting the melatonin so that I do not slumber at noon; school starts in a week for me, and so does work (on campus, so I don't have to drive as often). But I know your problem and it's solution.
Get off of the computer.
You and I are what some call "photosensitive"; artificial light activates our brains and keeps us awake, and knowing how we both lurv the internets, the addictivity is in our desire to keep entertained.
It gets boring to be up late without something stimulating the mind, be it television or the computer, and we trap ourselves from the get-go by staying up past 10pm, watching or playing games.
If you are truthfully concerned about your sleep patterns, ween yourself off of the computer for one week. Try it; you will probably feel mentally unstable for a while, and that alone prooves the seriousness of your issues. I did it last summer, and hooked myself again this fall. Needless to say, I'm in need of another rehab.

When I came to Japan I had no internet at home. It was liberating. I changed to alcohol. Now I am addicted to both. Shit.

That's what I thought, then I went three months without it, and I was fine.
But now I'm back in the loop of things D: Gah. I'm going to shoot the computer.
The thing that almost always puts me to sleep is either reading, masturbating, or both. And milk. Lots o' milk. Sometimes turkey. And tea. And showers.
If that doesn't work, I just watch David Letterman until he makes me bored.

I go to sleep by going to bed, turning out all the lights, and pulling the covers over me. It's amazing how well of a sleep aid lying in a dark room with little to no light or sound (hopefully) helps to put you to sleep. ^_^
Of course, this is when I can drag myself away from whatever it is I was doing that kept me up.
Sleep is good! But some people are so picky about it. I know my sister can't sleep unless it's completely dark, and my brother can't sleep without his window open.
I can fall asleep anywhere as long as there's room for me to strech my legs out. Most nights I forget to turn off the light so I fall asleep that way and my sister has to turn it off when she goes to bed.

I've started my no-computer-past-evenings gig.
So far it has not been bad; morning runs/light strength training/iso-stretches to rev up the engine for the day, then another cool-down mile run before 6pm.
One thing that's plaguing me (and will be for the next 2 weeks) is that I'm only capable of sleeping for 5-6 hours on normal time, which is why I'm awake right now (as I fell asleep at 10pm). If it works out for me (the no computer time-period), maybe you could adopt it as well, Mittens.
It's too fricken freezing to run atm...another 2 hours and the beast and I will be good to go :-)

I think I fixed my schedule, we'll see tonight. I stayed up from 9:30PM Friday, to 6:30PM Saturday, slept til midnight, and then went to bed at 6AM today since I was still tired. I woke up at 10AM, so that's good.

I can't fall asleep if the room isn't completely dark and completely quiet. The green lights from my computer area actually bother me when I'm trying to sleep, so have to make sure the computer chair blocks out all those lights. I also can't sleep if I'm too cold. Sucks now because it'll be cold season around here till April -_-. I can't leave the heater on if I'm sleeping because of the noise issue. I sleep with earplugs most days. Often it's very quiet when I go to sleep, so I don't have to have them in. But early in the morning, usually the crazy mofos upstairs wake me up with their walking or screaming at each other, so I have to put the earplugs in anyway... I can usually go back to sleep. I can't wear the earplugs too much because my after a while, my ears will hurt and one of these days I'm worried i'll give myself an ear infection.
I'm what you call a "picky sleeper", I guess. I'm also a very light sleeper. I could never be like some people who fall asleep anywhere. I used to be able to sleep on the floor, but I can't anymore. I have to at least have a mattress or a couch. Sucks to be me : p. I'm sure I missed some other sleeping habits that I have too . haha.

My body clock during school is good, during the holidays it takes acid and doesnt work right.
Holiday period bed is anytime between 11pm and 2am and i awake any time between 5am and 10am.
School periods i sleep form 11pm until 6-7am
Weekends School 12am - 9am (7am on a saturday cause of sport)
I got back on my normal sleep cycle once school started back up, but for some retarded reason, my body decided it needed a hell of a lot more sleep today.
Usually I go to sleep around 1am on saturday nights and wake up at like 9 or 10am. I went to sleep at 1am and woke up at 5:30pm. Now im screwed up again until tomorrow night. Sheesh. And I don't believe we have any Nite Quill. >.<
My sleep pattern is currently fucked up. its like midnight now and I'l prolly go to bed at 4 am.. I blame my love for caffiene.
I used to try that staying up thing.. aided with redbull, and I still cant last. You be amazed under what conditions you can sleep when you really feel the need. Like full sunlight; dog barking; TV on; random day sounds..
My personal solution is to have something to do the next day.
Oh and dont drink caffiene or use the interenet or electricity.

Exactly. People have different triggers for their sleep, but I still firmly believe that the main culprits are bad habits that interact with energy/brain function. It's usually caffiene OR the internet from what I've seen, but then there are the unlucky folk who have addictions to both (or alcohol =\ ).
@Ninja: The reason for this is the thought-pattern you've trained your brain to use; for most people, they CAN get up and at least sleep for 6-7 hours, because if you don't, you're going to miss class. A sort of survivalistic alarm-clock that's subconciously switched on during the semester. This has happened to me for as long as I can remember, post-kindergarten.

I'm usually a good sleeper, but if I get stressed out then sleeping is really hard. I'm prescribed Sonata, which is a sleep aid and it is WONDERFUL. I take 1 an hour before I want to go to sleep, and as soon as I lie down and shut my eyes, it knocks me out. I don't take it very often, only if I'm really stressed out and don't think I'll be able to sleep without it. I take it maybe once every other week or so. I also buy Tylenol's SIMPLY SLEEP, which is an over the counter sleep aid, that I take maybe twice a week. It isn't as effective as prescription sleep aids, but it definitely helps when I need it. Sleep is important!
man I'm still up. 5 am now.. maybe I can survive the day...

Jeez Yogi, it's only 2 pm here DX
And ellie, is taking that much sleep aid bad for you? Maybe I'm just skeptic because I'm scared of medicine. Unless it's in a shot, or I need it, I won't take it. (And by need it, I mean my life depends on it... like penicillin or something)
ellie
01-09-2007, 10:17 PM
I don't think its bad. Sonata is approved for daily use; I only need it once every other week or so. And the SIMPLY SLEEP is also non-habit forming, but I don't use it too often, either. I'll probably have to take something tonight, because classes start tomorrow, and that always makes me nervous and stressed out so sleeping is hard.
Whats weird, is that whenever my alarm clock goes off in the morning, as soon as I press the snooze button I go back to sleep. The only time I can go instantly to sleep is when I need to wake up! Bummer!

You have my sympathies.
Last week I kept staying up till 4am and sleeping till 3pm for no reason. On Sunday I stayed up all night to reset my sleeping pattern. I have just gone back to my old job, which puts me on the night shift ( 8pm - 12am and 8pm - 6am) starting next Monday.
I have to work nights again because I have lectures at uni during the day now.
This means my sleep pattern will be a new level of 'fucked up'.
:gloomy:
I'll only have to put up with it for a few weeks for extra spending money in Japan, thank goodness .:innocent:

All sleep meds have a risk of addiction from the use itself; it doesn't have to habit-forming to give withdrawl effects when stopping after months of use. Instead of relying on your own melatonin to do the job, you've got a sub that will cripple it some because your receptors are now switched to "pill mode".
At least this is what my physician told me when I asked firmly about worst-case scenarios...
Pangloss, I'm wishing you good luck and suggest you try and find a non-night shift job when you have the time. It's going to be tough, but your kidneys will thank you when you're not fighting natural cycles.

I slept for like, a half hour last night. Today was the first day of class for the semester, so last night I was all riled up and anxious, so I just could not sleep. I was tossing and turning and fidgetting all night. At like 2:30, my boyfriend was like, "ellie, please just take a sleeping pill so we BOTH can sleep," but by that point, it was too late because I would never have been able to wake up in the morning for my class. I finally fell asleep around 4:30am, and then the alarm clock went off at 7, and I fell back asleep until 8:30. That was a rough night :( Then this morning I drank almost an entire 10 cup pot of coffee by myself, so now I am all jacked up on caffiene so I can't even take a nap yet. I guess it's better that way, though, so I can go to bed early tonight and get a good night's sleep!

What always works for me is some nice herbal tea or failing that, reading online forums. Seriosuly - I've fallen asleep reading flamewars more times than I can count(though the asleep at my desk part sucks as I usually end up with an imprint of my keyboard)
But for aking up... yeah, Coffee is us old persons' elixir and how we manage to keep up with the 20 year olds. :hat:
Gotta love this new version of "drug therapy"
