MTV takes a lot of crap around here, but the channel responsible for two of the greatest tv shows and one of the greatest movies ever (The State, Beavis and Butthead, and Election, respectively) is A-ok in my book!

A resounding 'Nay' from me.

I voted nay. How is it "Music Television" if they dont play music? There's nothing entertaining about that channel. Everytime I flip on, there's a bunch of assholes bumping and grinding to NOISE (that's not music as far as I'm concerned) on a beach or in a beach house.
You want quality TV? Watch TV Land. C'mon, how can one not like great shows like Night Court and Sanford & Son?

Personally... MTV is a *meh* on my scale. I really wish that a lot of things weren't there, but if it weren't for Viva La Bam, or Andy Milonakis I'm pretty sure that I would have absolutely nothing to watch at times. On the other hand, all those dating shows make me want to reach into the TV screen and strangle those stupid bitches and the asshole guys. And let's not forget the suckiness of the "real world."... I hate reality TV soo much... and TRL. I don't like it, but only cause they never show the whole video, just like ten seconds of it. Which is a pain in the ass.
Also they helped produce a few sweet movies but I can't remember which ones>_<
I vote yay.
They do have a lot of crap on them but overall I like the channels. They have contributed a lot to the music industry, from what I know, I'm hardly an expert on it though.
Good channel to watch if you're housebound and bored...
big fat nay
there are so many better ways to kill your brain cells than watching that crap. most of its lower than a bad gerry springer show.

MTV has changed... the way it is now sucks. It's just a cesspool of people trying to make money off of passing fads and things that don't mean anything. It appeals to sex, fame, and false drama only to the end of making money. The way it used to be, when it was about music, expression, and something different was great but now they've made another channel for that called MTV2 (or something like that).

Actually, I think it's always been that way, just the marketing has changed =\

Ooh, Jerry Springer is a good show too. In high school or freshman year of colege I wrote an 8-piece collection of papers on the greatness that is Jerry Springer and his show.
Tssss..

when it comes to tv Mtv sucks but they make kick ass movies like coach carter and save the last dance to name a few, but then you also have to realise is Mtv,VH1,& CMT are all owned by paramount. so if anyone is to blame for the suck fest that Mtv has become blame paramount.
Everyone hates on it because it's become "cool" to hate on it. Or they think proclaiming their disgust for MTV makes them some upper class television watcher; SCREEEEEEEW THAT. Entertainment is entertainment; I'm not going to raise my nose at one if I enjoy it.
Everyone also blames it because it doesn't have much "music" Ya? And?
The shows on it are entertaining, to me atleast. I don't care, and I'm willing to tell the world.
I don't have cable TV, but when I'm around it, MTV is the channel of my choice. The reality tv shows like Real World amuse me and sometimes I wish I was there. What college bound student who enjoys socializing and partying woudln't want to see other college students socialize and party?
so :P, part of the 3 baby! Yay!
*obvouisly some people just sincerly hate it but some of people are just hopping on the bandwagon and not giving it a sincere chance*

Mainly because of Made, Pimp my Ride, Cribs and a few other shows.

Nay. They have some of the shittiest reality and sketch shows, they hardly ever play music, the music they play is horrid, the hosts are dipshits, waves of poseurs worship MTV like gospell, etc., etc., etc. until the end of time.

American MTV sucks... and no I don't hate it because its cool to hate it... I hate it because it sucks... MTV has a stranglehold over what many teens listen to and instead of putting that hold to some use and playing real decent music they fill their heads with crap and more crap reality shows.
MTV Japan, thats a pretty cool channel... I don't really understand whats going on most of the time but its quite a bit more interesting then american MTV the few times I've seen it.
MTV Singapore, worse than American MTV, but I haven't seen American MTV in around 2 years so its possible its gotten to that level too.

I just saw Election last night! What a great movie. My favourite part was the way Paul Metzler read his speech. That single part really took me back to my high school days. Also, I really liked Tammy's speech, and I really wonder if anyone has done that in real life. That would be brilliant.
I'm really out of the loop when it comes to what's on MTV/Much Music (Canadian equivalent) these days, mostly because I don't find those channels to be entertaining anymore. Daria was a good show though.

The answer would be a "Yay" for me. I happen to like MTV. I watch it once in a while. It's not a channel I watch all the time, it's just something I like to watch when I am bored.

I have seen only one decent MTV show - ever (acctually, I was just one episode of a show that was good, the rest of the episodes were crap).
And that show was only good because I was laughing AT the people in it for being such patheic idiots. Not quite what the producer had in mind, I suspect.
So, a resounding NAY from me.

I used to want to be on the mtv show "made"
or "becomming"
(mind you it was mtv CANADA)
MTV hasn't been about the music since 1992, when it was further devastated as part of Nirvana's quest to destroy all that was good about music at the time (something they were pretty successful at, I might add. I can only think of 2-3 bands since then that haven't been shit, and that's if I try hard...).
If I want a music channel I hit VH1. Sure, they're not showing music videos 24-7, but at least they stay focused on the subject they advertise, the music.
this MTV music arguement is old. It's been like that for years. The T in MTV also stands for Television :P
Some people(ie me) enjoy MTV for the shows and reality TV shows they host. My music tastes are different anyways. What 16-25 year old can't enjoy a little Real World?
Awwwwwww c'mon, you know you want to. PopCulturePooka does it.
Reality TV just ain't my deal, man. Besides, calling Cribs reality TV is like saying you're living the same lifestyle as Motley Crue back in 1984.
lol. Cribs is entertaining sometimes. I use to watch it.
I guess you can phrase that what ya like :P
Yes it's true that some people like you simply don't like reality tv shows(and cribs), but others step into this topic and say
"mtv doenst play any more music; so i'm leaving."
wait! That shoudln't be held against it. Perhaps if they added, "and I don't like the shows they do have." Then, I'd be fine with it. But holding something against iit that's been going on for so long(92?? I didn't think it was that prominent until later) is bit unfair!
but you may Nay. I still say Yay, in moderation perhaps.

If I want a music channel I hit VH1.
If I want a music channel, I turn on one of the Sirius channels. Sure, a blank screen sucks, but it's better than whatever crap you would see on MTV or VH1 anyways. Granted that when I want music what I actually do is pop in a CD. Better than turning on any channel.

See, I liked MTV when it was y'know, MTV. And actually *played* music (the mind- numbing dribble they play now isn't music, any sane person would agree), but now it's resorted to the nightmares that we call "The Real World" and "Pimp my Ride". So yeah, definite nay to MTV.

By showing The Surreal Life and Celebrity Fit Club 24/7?
Must have taken a nosedive since I last checked them out if that's the case. While it certainly wasn't 24/7 music videos last I watched regularly, the content was consistently about music and the people who made it. Behind the Music, Where Are They Now, and the various documentaries that they did were what kept me coming back to watch it up until I got to college and couldn't watch it anymore (got stuck with the worst offender of all...BET...)

Yes, because force feeding our generation manufactured music has really advanced music.
And hey, cookie cutter bands and singers are all obviously in it for the music!
I mean, look at INXS.
What artiste's! sarcasm

Granted that their show is retarded.

nay.
I'll watch if they are doing some of the rock stuff but that was only to see why people like it. I have to agree with some of it. I like the whitestripes and gorillaz but thats my extent of popular music. I'm big into the jazz blues and ska scene.
