Every winter, I send gifts to troops overseas. Some of them write back, and I've met a few in person.

There was a Marine that asked for a Rubik's cube for Christmas, so I sent him one... I found out yesterday that he had died last week.

...I dunno. I just wanted to say it.

This is one of those times when an old cliché like, "It's the thought that counts" just doesn't cut it. That's a horribly depressing Christmas story, but at the same time, there are many troops who are having shitty Christmases away from home and at risk of death (or grievous wounds). I'm glad you're helping out, but my God, that's a horrible thing to learn about.

Perhaps you should try to send a letter to his parents saying that you're sorry for their loss? Perhaps they need that letter now more than the soldier who died needed a Rubik's cube...

in order to brighten the thread a bit.
here's how houston made a local marine's christmas a little brighter after he returned from iraq losing control of half of his body due to a mine.

Damn....

RIP Marine.

Fixed. And I agree.
