What does 何とこんなに mean exactly?
Hell, even ちょう戦するの isn't so easy to put into english without taking a few liberties. "challenge thing"

Would be a decent way of translating it.

The 何とこんなに is very difficult to translate outside of the sentence (by itself, it means "what? this much..."), but you have to break the sentence down:

挑戦（ちょうせん）する　のは　何と　こんなに　かわいいらしい　娘サンだ！

Challenge (particle - "of the") what this much cute young girl!
...and to rearrange the words into Engrish...
(of) the one challenging, what? It is a young girl who is this cute?

Hmm　何と is listed as an adverb so I was thinking that it was modifying the こんなに. If you sepereate it like you did it makes sense.

Is the usage here the same as in "あなたは何と美しいのでしょう。" ? Here it seems to be just adding emphasis to "美しい".

nanto, in this case, means like "how" or "such". Not "how" as in "How do you do that?" but "how" as in "Awww, how cute!".

For ?????????????J???C?????????T???? you could say ... such a cute girl as your self.

But the whole sentence seems to be something like... The one that's going to fight is this cute looking girl here!

Something like that...it naturally doesn't go well into English...

Actually, I failed to mention that the "何と" can be interpreted two different ways. The way I put it, and the emphasis that you guys are talking about, depending on how the sentence is parsed.

I know exactly what you mean about it not being easy to put into english. When I'm reading japanese there are a lot of instances where I'm fairly certain I know what it means but have problems putting it into english.

I had a similar question, relating to something I came across in a Japanese game...does anyone know what's meant by "nattenai wa..."? Wa is just there as a particle, I'd assume, like usual... I've been unable to find a translation for it, the closest thing I found was "marudenattenai" in a japanese dictionary, meaning unarranged or all wrong (lit: not in a circle?), which is of no help, unless it means "this isn't...", which I don't think it does.

Lemme know if any of you guys have stumbled across it before....

Is it "は" at the end, or actually "わ"? If it's the latter, it's not a particle, simply a sentence ender that denotes either femininity, an older way of speaking, some types of kansai-ben, etc.

"Nattenai" can mean a lot of things, depending on the kanji used and the context. It can mean:

- it's not ringing/making a sound
- "it's not happening" would be a rough translation, but it means "it's not up to par/it's not good enough/they don't make 'em like they used to"

Also, even if you're not a huge fan of old school RPG's (classics!) it's a good way to learn some random ass japanese vocabulary.

If I'm not careful after playing a few of these games I'll be ending all my sentences with でござる and refering to my self as せっしゃ　 :D

Ah, thanks. The conext would be a female (as you mentioned), who is actually looking at a tarot card, and ostensibly gleaning some sort of information from it. It's in hiragana, so all I had to go on was that.

So, I'm guessing it would mean, in this context, that what's being seen in the card is inevitable (and, thus, dissapointing, it being a negative thing)? As opposed to it being unclear, or something similar. Or would it be that events can't be seen?

I'll toss another fragment of dialog in here for some feedback on my interpretation of it's meaning.

hmmm, I guess you've got potential.

you'll most likely be able to master "techniques".

Faumdano - Only a small mistake that doesn't change the meaning. "uchi" in the second line means "during/while." It's a reference of time.

TS- I'd have to see the overall conversation, but I'm going to guess that she got a reading on the cards that wasn't entirely pleasing or somehow didn't meet her expectations.

As far as jRPGs go, a lot of them suck. But then again, a lot of them don't: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Chrono Trigger, DragonQuest 4&5, Final Fantasy 3-6, Skies of Arcadia, etc.

Morrowind was great from an interactive storytelling point of view, but the *actual* main storyline was boring as hell.

However, most japanese sites I visit are Shift-JIS.
