I just read the latest Gaijin Smash post, and read a few comments people had wrote about teachers bullying students. And by incredible coincidence, when I turn to the Mainichi (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/national/news/20061213p2a00m0na015000c.html) ...

SHIZUOKA -- A 17-year-old girl upset over a saying about "black sheep" that her former junior high school teacher wrote in her graduation album argued that the local government bore responsibility for the teacher's actions as a hearing opened at a court here on Wednesday.

The girl, whose name has been withheld, is demanding 16.5 million yen in compensation from the Shizuoka Municipal Government, claiming that it failed to prevent the teacher from violating her educational rights.

During the initial round of oral proceedings at the Shizuoka District Court, the city asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, indicating it was prepared to fight the claims.

According to the suit, the teacher wrote the English saying, "There is a black sheep in every flock," in the student's graduation album in March last year, hurting her feelings. "Flock" was misspelled as "frock."

The teacher also allegedly slandered her and hit her on the head immediately after she entered the school on the grounds that her older brother had high-functioning autism. From the following day, he allegedly ordered her to study alone in a meeting room.

The teacher reportedly told the girl's classmates, "She's disabled, so don't hang out with her." Up until her graduation, the girl had no option but to study by herself in a separate room, according to the lawsuit.

The teacher resigned in May last year, but has reportedly not apologized to the girl. (Mainichi)

It's getting to the point where I wish I was Pontius Pilate so I could just wash my hands and walk away ...

The first job I had in Japan was at a Cram School. During the first week I was there, one of the teachers told me that if a kid gave me any trouble, I should kick his desk into him. His name was "Imai", but I always thought of him as "aimai" (曖昧), which means half-assed in this context.

Wow. Just......wow. It literally is EVERYDAY that I hear something about someone being bullied to the point of emotional distress and/or death.

Ridiculous.

Well, it could always be worse. It could be China (http://www.zonaeuropa.com/20061213_1.htm).

My, I'm just the harbringer of doom and gloom to these boards lately, aren't I.

Thats just horrific...if a teacher grabbed my child by the throat and punched him in the ribs I probably would've retaliated which isn't neccesary the best course of action, but it's my child.

Please if anyone knows, there HAS to be a way to help spread this poor mans story effectively. If anyone knows a way to send this link to any kind of major news reporting media (regardless of whether it's Chinese or not), please help spread it.

I wanna say spread it to CNN and other major news outlets, but most likely it wouldn't do anything more than just boost their ratings and not help solve the case. But still, anything and everything has to help somehow. Don't let these poor parents suffer a silent crime.

Considering how the People's Liberation Army massacred a few Tibetans crossing into India the other month, and the collective world reaction was "That's terrible, now I'll go back to eating dinner", I don't think much will happen.

Every time I get upset about something that happens in Japan that offends my Western sensibilities, I always remind myself that it could be worse. In Japan (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/national/news/20061215p2a00m0na011000c.html), teenage girls participate in porn films so they can get money for shopping and fun. In China (http://chinadigitaltimes.net/2006/12/from_kidnapped_bride_to_national_tv_and_back.php), they get abducted off the street and sold as sex slaves to farmers in the wild interior where they can enjoy a life of daily beatings and submission.

In Africa it's probably a hell of a lot worse.

^ This would be the one time I would agree with that Indonesian guy that banging JAVs is the epitome of one's desires in life. (crosses fingers and hopes that the older one wasn't skanky-looking). And man, when I was 15, I would have loved to run into a same-age ... uh, actress.

At 15, aren't they all actresses? Histrionically speaking, of course.

I felt like an ant tonight. Had a 12-yr-old girl pretty much feel me up in class today. I was so damn surprised, I think Freddy was ant-sized with fear...
