The only ones that really should qualify are the ones that actually still stump people to this day about how or why they were built.

... hmmm since it's only per email... it'll be interesting to see how abused this becomes :sigh: -_-;. I hope they have some method to catch votes that are spamming from the same IP in an attempt to skew results -_-;.

I think it's a pretty dumb idea to replace the Seven Wonders, but if they're going to go through with it, I might as well vote:

Acropolis
Christ Redeemer
Colosseum
Great Wall
Kiyomizu Temple
Pyramids of Giza
Statue of Liberty

EDIT: Try clicking the confirmation link again! XD

Wait a second, who gives them the right to pick the new seven wonders of the world? Well since its a vote, who gives them the right to commission a vote to determine the new seven wonders of the world?

I voted.

My thoughts exactly...

This really seems like a trashy marketing scheme. Taken from the page where you register to vote:

Information on New7Wonders initiatives and opportunities, such as:
New7Wonders holidays and travel
New7Wonders coins and stamps
New7Wonders books
New7Wonders toys
New7Wonders clothing and accessories
New7Wonders media, CDs, DVDs
Other New7Wonders and associated products or services

Yeah, they really sound like they give a shit about honoring great achievements in human history*. Didn't actually register and vote because I don't feel like supporting this farce.

*I'd hardly put the Great Wall and the Hagia Sophia on par with the Statue of Liberty in terms of human accomplishment.

Pretty much exactly my thoughts when I read it

I hate the commercializing of it, but let's face it-- how else are they going to get folks' attention? Nobody gives a shit about history anymore unless they can steal relics and sell them on eBay.

I got this from Yahoo!News: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20061113/ap_tr_ge/travel_trip_new_seven_wonders_2

I think it's a fun idea. Teachers could use this to teach kids history and then have a class vote. Each kid could pick their seven and tell everyone why, then the votes can be tallied and they could vote as a class. How awesome would that be?

I love history, so I guess I'm biased. Like I said earlier, most folks don't give a shit anymore. Probably why history keeps repeating itself.

There's nothing stopping a teacher from doing this as an activity now. A (good) teacher certainly doesn't need this craptastic website to teach kids about most of these wonders.

I love history, too, but this website marginalizes the field more than it helps it. Letting anyone with an internet connection vote is the reason why manufactured crap like the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower are going to beat out true wonders. And I doubt even the developers of this promotion even know what the hell they're talking about (i.e. including the Pyramids in this list of "new" wonders when they're already part of the ancient seven wonders).

I voted for the Statue of Liberty as a symbol, not as an object. And based upon its location (Liberty Island). Think of how many immigrants have seen it over the years, and, upon seeing it, thought something along the lines of "Now, life will be better.".

The specifics (or mysteries) of an object's construction isn't the only thing that can make an object a wonder.

And I doubt even the developers of this promotion even know what the hell they're talking about (i.e. including the Pyramids in this list of "new" wonders when they're already part of the ancient seven wonders).

Wiki this event. It's acknowladged that the pyramis were on the old list. They've been included once again becuase they're still around. Most of the ancient wonders are long gone.

Umm. No. They give the unwashed masses another pointless avenue through which they can express their views .. and thus help sustain the very prevalent delusion that individuals matter in the grand scheme of things.

Regarding the pyramids and large, heavy stone temples:

I would vote for the KWC (Kowloon Walled City)... which was a monument to inept lawyers, government procrastination and humanity's lovable tendency to emulate termites when real-estate runs out...

Too bad the bastards in HongKong city administration dynamited the whole edifice..

Why are they still doing this? The USA Today already did...

USA TODAY and ABC News' Good Morning America teamed up to pick the seven New Wonders of the World. The new Seven Wonders of the World, chosen by our experts, are: Potala Palace/Jokhang Temple, Tibet; Jerusalem's Old City, Israel; polar ice caps; Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine Monument; the Internet; Maya pyramids, Central America; and Serengetti Plain, Tanzania

An eighth wonder, voted on by readers and viewers at USATODAY.com is unveiled 11/24, the Grand Canyon.

Those are stupid wonders. >_> Most of them are naturally occuring stuff. The point of the seven wonders of the world was manmade things like the pyramids or the hanging gardens.

Someone should tell the staff at USA Today to leave the continent once in awhile. That list is so America-centric, it's sad.

Yeah, about as American as the Old City in Jerusalem I guess.

Oh, and no one else in the world (like Japan or Europe) uses the Internet!!!

Somehow it doesn't surprise me that readers of the USA TODAY picked some place in the US either.
