I am currently planning a trip to Japan where I am going to meet some friends and just screw around for about a week or two. We are headed to an area called Ehime, which is located in the Matsuyama area of the Shikoku region (for those who have no idea where that's at, it's the northwest corner of the biggest island aside from the Japan mainland. Find Osaka, and look to the left, and you'll see the big island). Another friend of mine who's going on the trip told me that the area is not as crowded as the other major cities like Osaka and Tokyo. He also said prices might be slightly cheaper, although he cannot be sure.
I was wondering if anybody has actualy been there. What's the area like? Is it more of a residential or city area?
My friend (the one who lives in Japan, not the one coming with me) also said that she was going to throw a party when we arrive. Is that a good idea or a bad idea?

Hokkaido is bigger than Shikoku, and so is Kyushu. I'm pretty small that it's not the biggest island after Honshu.
Ehime is the middle of bumfuck nowhere. Period. Matsuyama is a big city, relatively speaking in comparison to the rest of Shikoku, but it's still the middle of nowhere. It would probably take around 4 hours to get to mainland Kansai, and cost a whole boatload of money.
I went out there, and I was shocked at how in the middle of nowhere it was. It's a frickin' ghost town in comparison to Kansai where I live.

I'll let you in on something about Shikoku.
Shikoku is where old people want to go when they retire because there are no young people there to bother them because it is so god damned boring. Popular things people do in Shikoku: look at trees, fish, sit in their yard.
I hope you have a good time and all, but don't be surprised if it's crappy.

don't listen to these kill joys. If you are going to be with friends and visiting a foreign country you will have fun!! Don't go in with a bad attitude, I haven't been to Shikoku, so maybe it IS as bad as they say, but my guess is that you will enjoy your time there XD

Girlfriend says:
Ok, there's not much to do and it's really in the middle of inaka; but it's very pretty, there are very good onsens, the food is delicious(according to a Japanese though, I wouldn't trust that one), and if you're into Japanese litterature, Ehime was Soseki's favorite spot. So it depends what you go there for. But if you're making plans to party hard, you might be in for a disapointment... :D
