So I found this little video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZSPMmx5Qa4) And there's more about this guy (The frankburger one is hilarious), but, returning to the subject of the ATMs, a friend of mine who went to Tokyo to visit her sister suffered the same thing.

And as a sidenote... I fail at watching horror films :bang: .

Edit: I guess I can't correct the thread's title, huh?.

I had a recent experience with one ATM at a convenience store. It's different from the ones at the bank, where I know which buttons to push on the touch screen. Then I saw the "push here for English" button. So I did. Insert Card. Okay. Enter PIN. Done. Press the button for withdrawal, and then the machine flashes up a message that says "We are sorry, this ATM is not capable of providing service in English."

Say what? Then why the hell is there a place on the touch screen that says "push here for English"?

Convenient stores have interfaces for many many different banks. The main menu is in English, but if your specific bank interface doesn't allow for English, and/or if there is a menu item that they have not translated (usually an error for trying to withdrawl too late or whatnot), then it will spit your card out and apologize.

Kinda like a Windows error, huh?.

Another quircky little thing, are there not jelly donuts with the "normal" jelly in Japan, or are most filled with curry and/or bean?.

I've never seen a jelly donut. Go to Mr. Donuts, and you can get whipped cream - or custard-filled, and the Japanese an (bean paste). My coworkers felt sick when I first told them about jelly-filled...

Japanese ATMs accept coin deposits, and I don't even have to roll them, I can just dump them in. And if you have a Mitsubishi-Tokyo-UFJ account, the ATMs are oepn 24 hours a day, so they are getting better. don't be so harsh. I'm actually considering switching to them, I hate mizuho.

...you mean, there are ATMs that aren't open 24 hours? And I thought Chinese banks were bad.

When I first came here, banks were open 9-3 M-F (no change there), and ATMs were open 8:45-5 M-F. My first weekend, I ended up having to survive on 130yen...

Hahaha... I remember this summer I was going out for drinks in Tokyo with my boyfriend and his friends, and I stopped at an ATM to get cash before we went out and it worked, then like 2 hours later I need more so I went to the exact same ATM and it said "This machine does not accept this kind of card" or something like that.

Loves it... LOVES IT!

Wait, wait....so the ATMs are not open on the weekend or at night?!?! That negates the whole purpose of having a ATM does it not?

When I first came here... 16yrs ago. Now, they're open on weekends, and into the early evening, but not usually 24 hrs, unless you're in a big city like Tokyo, or you use one of the machines inside a convenience store (which often have a useage fee).

How screwed up would it be if the ones in the convenience stores after a certain time shut off.
