This topic went up rather quickly. I just got the news from an IRC channel I frequent about 10 minutes ago as well.
What's sad is that we may have found out about it before his wife did.

Such is the nature of the Internet. Gah, but his kids may not even remember all that much of him. :(

This is huge here. My state is his home state, and he isn't just a TV personality. He is a massive ecology and environtmental advocate and did a lot for these causes in my state and awareness. Its a huge shock, but... he went doing what he loved.

When I heard the news, I thought it was a joke. I always loved watching him with his enthausiasm and kindness. The way he spoke of his wife and children and dog Suey during his documentaries always made me go "Awww". I'll really miss him. He's one of the very few if not only television personalities I cared about.
Rest in peace, mate. He died the way he lived - accosted by a pissed-off animal.

How the fuck.... :gloomy: I loved watching his show with my little brothers. :(
How much force can a stingray muster? Did it go through his ribs or right through bone??
Thought for sure it would be a croc.
That is a freak accident though. Only the second person in Australia to be killed in such a fashion.
My parents told me this morning and I said "No way, a stingray? Bull Shit!"
Then I got home and here I am now after reading up on it.
I already miss him and I shall pray for his family. :(

That bites. :(
It hit his lung - and the poison did the rest. It's a totally freak accident, since the poison isn't lethal unless you almost hit the exact right spot and it messes up your breathing. I doubt if more than 2-3 people a year die from them.
Aww man - now I can't make any more croc hunter jokes. This just totally ruins my whole week.

"Eddie's in HELL!"
Even Stone Cold said they've taken things way too far.
Having said that, look at it this way - The two main people 'milking' Eddies death were/are 1) one of his best friends and 2) his cousin (who broke down his hotel door in a panic to find his body). The two people in the WWE that knew him best, cared about him most and at the end of the day wouldn't have participated in anything that they thought was out of line.
The man's family has been in wrestling forever and by all accounts he loved it (and his being fired from the WWE was one of the gut-checks that finally helped him get the motivation to kick the drugs). Consider that perhaps he would have wanted it this way - would even have taken it as a compliment. And you can be damn sure that Vince would have discussed it with his family before even considering signing off on an angle like that.
The equivalent in this situation would be Steve Irwin's death being used to promote and raise awareness of environmental issues - which I'm positive he would be all in favour of.
[Please tell me that "even Stone Cold" refers to the fact that "even a contemptible fucktard thinks this is wrong", not that he's some kind of moral baromenter?]

It was a simple question, and one that surely didn't call for;
Unlike say if you died, where I'd doubt even your family would much care.

Not like grieved in the same way I'd grieve for a family member, but yeah, I felt genuine sorrow. He was one of those rare people who will never be replaceable. I'm not talking about him as a private individual, of course - nobody is completely replaceable in that sense - but in the things he did for the public, his personality, and the charisma he had on TV.

MNJetter - So charisma and personality are reasons to emotionally connect with someone you don't personally know? What about all the faceless people who die everyday, who also give to charity...and just maybe have contributed something more useful to humanity than the croc hunter. I think it has more to do with the fact that most of us are so used to him being around on television rather than being emotionally attached. It's like how some people feel when they are about to leave high school: They feel like they'll miss everyone, even the people they hardly ever talked to, just because they were so used to seeing them in the halls and classes for four years. It's the pain of losing a constant.

Actualy a very cool person. It'd be like Jackie Chan dying in a car accident or something - absolutely nothing but suckage, because the guy was not a typical TV type and was hilariously funny as well. All while promoting environmental and animal rights issues, which get almost no coverage as it is.
P.S. Here's to another ten films from Jackie -
ShadowDeth, memorial threads are probably the one place I will tell you if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. You're behaving like an antagonistic jerk. Obviously people do care and if you don't, keep it out of this thread.

I kinda feel bad for Irwin when I heard what happened; a stingray barb through the heart is crazy. I gotta feel bad for his family too, considering he left behind two kids to his wife. Regardless of fame or fortune, it's life-shattering to lose your partner and raise kids on your own without the other important parent figure in their lives.

Sorry, but regardless of your stance. He gave a gift much larger than many other people could. Mass education and social awareness. It has absolutely nothing to do with his charisma and personality aside from the fact that they were tools he used to further his causes.
Giving to charity is hardly being a figurehead and championing the cause. You repeatedly compare the two but they are much more different. One person just donates a bit of their time or money, for him it was his life.
Anyone that is willing to live like that for a cause is worth the social "hive mind" empathy, because not only do they do amazing things themselves, they also inspire others to do things on their own. Yes, the world is at a loss even if you don't personally think so. A good person and a huge inspiration has left us.
Also, I agree with previous posters, not only in this thread but repeatedly in the past. You are a very poor troll. I will argue with you up to a certain point, but once you push past a certain point I will simply ignore you and continue about my very nice day. :) Trolls arn't worth the time it takes to read their posts, much less worth getting agrivated over.
