I came across this recently:
http://www.spreeder.com/

Basically, you input text and it flashes it at you, one word at a time, speeding up slowly, to increase your reading speed.
It's pretty awesome to realise how fast you can read text when you've got no control over it, and it also allows you to change the speed, font size etc.

If you're looking for material to read with it, may I recommend KWizard's short story:

Alternatively, any short or long story works. There's plenty of material in the creativity section here.

Try it out, see how fast you can read at, try increasing the words per minute.

Oh, and be sure to checkout their help (link at the top) for info on how you might set it up for even faster reading (altering chunk size and window size, basically)

That's kind of interesting. I couldn't do anywhere near the default 300wpm one at a time, but bumping to chunksize of 30 words at a time 600wpm was comfortable .

I wonder how the preference breakdown for people is between speed and chunksize. I seem to ok with greater page size, but can't handle any speed at all one word at a time.

Nice site, really could get me back into reading shape seeing as my first day of school is near :gloomy: .

I also find it hard reading at the default, and it getting easier as you add to the chunksize... but then again I used Waiting for Godot as my test run, and that book is hard to comprehend anyways :bang:

I like to take my time while reading. If I buy something, I'm going to enjoy it and not rush through just to get finished with it.

If you're buying a book you can't use it with the site anyway though ;P

It might be cool if it could recognize phrases or sentences. That is how speed reading works. You recognize a phrase and just glancing at it can tell you what it says.
