The latest Studio Ghibli joint, directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro. My girlfriend liked it a lot, but I thought it was mediocre compared to Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away (haven't seen Howl yet). The story is more straightforward and the animation is a bit subpar. Not a bad movie, just not as great as Ghibli's others, imho.

I want to see this movie so badly. Sure, I could find it illegally over the interwebs, but I'm too moral to do that (plus I'd have to find an english fan-dub, and those are usually awful anyway), and I don't live in a big city (nor have any plans to visit one), so I'll have to wait another year and one-half to two years, I suppose, like I do for every english-dubbed Studio Ghibli movie to come out on dvd over here.

I read the books like 15 years ago. The books were decent.

I heard it was bad... but I still want to see it since I've seen almost all Ghibli movies. I guess I will just have to wait until it comes out in the US because when Howl came out, I could never find any illegal downloads.

LukeG: If you wait for the DVD it WILL have (at the very least) English subtitles. Every official BVHE release of Ghibli features have had a subtitle track (and Ghibli has an in-house guy who does them for festivals and stuff so even if the American version of the subs/dubs isn't out yet the "international festival subtitles" will be on the DVD).

I've heard from several sources that it's a better film than Howl. (Which actually isn't difficult. If Howl wasn't so visually beautiful it would have been mostly useless. Easily the weakest film Hayao Miyazaki has directed.) I'd really like to see it in theatres (and I do live in a big city) but I'd need to find one of my fluent-in-English friends to go see it with me (and most of my Japanese friends aren't fluent in English) so that I could actually get the whole plot explained to me... jozu ja arimasen!!!

It apparently won't be coming out in the US until 2009, due to the intellectual property situation with the Scifi Channel's Earthsea adaptation.

Oh, I'll definitely have to keep that in mind then. I tend to prefer the original in Japanese with English subbies to the English Dub, anyway.

Damn. I guess it'll have to be the BVHE release that T_N was talking about, then. There's no way I'm waiting another four years just to see it here in the states.

.. fandub? The majority of fan-translated works are in fact subbed, not dubbed. Just a FYI. Even those that are dubbed are largely regarded as jokes or parodies.
