What kind of jobs do you guys have? I started my first job late July working at DuPont, the "world's second largest chemical company". It's a very easy job, and the pay is good ($11 an hour, making $16.50 today because it is a Sunday). The only part of the job I dislike are the hours, since it shift work; they're constantly changing. There's 6:30AM-2:30PM, 2:30PM-10:30PM, and 10:30PM-6:30AM. I really can't complain at all about it, though, since nearly every single day is four hours of work and four hours of break. I get a lot of reading done. :P My last day is next Sunday, but I will still be receiving two or three paychecks after that.
And yes... I'm creating this thread at work.

But you didn't say what you actually do!
I've been working with 3G technology for a large telecoms company for about five years. Mostly I'm involved in configuring or upgrading the software in base stations, but my tasks vary a lot. Right now I'm trying to put together a basic hands-on course for some new guys at our section. Not so fun and not so easy, but it's a challenge.
All in all it's a good job. The pay isn't as high as in smaller companies, but my work is fairly easy and interesting, and I get to travel as much as I want/can. I'm trying to get them to send me to Japan, but my manager said that I would have to stay there for at least four months, and I can't be away from my family for that long (and they don't want to come with me either). :gloomy:
Too young to work. Have to be 16.
When I turn 15 I can work at the animal shelter though! I won't get money, but it'll be fun. :)

There's a conveyor belt, and I'm at the end of it. There's these monomer plates used in printing that come down. On one side of the table, I just need to inspect it for a few seconds, make sure it's ok, and then put it into a box. On the other side, I'd have to just put foam in the box on top of the plate. At the third station, I put the boxes full boxes onto a wooden pallet and when it's full (don't have to do it every time at the third station) I just need to bring it into the warehouse and onto a truck. It's all very simple and with no heavy lifting or anything since there's machines we use for all of it.

I work at the digital cameras department of an 'upscale' department store.
Hatred.
Next year however I'll be a high school science teacher. Yeap... I will be in charge of the future. MWAHAHAHA

I write resumes, do job searches, that sort of thing. I also write what I jokingly call "mailbox spam," letters that are trying to convince you to buy something. I pay myself... better than the average american, I'll just leave it at that.

Guest Service Representative (aka Usher) at U.S. Cellular Field. My job sucks, except for the fact that I get to watch games for free sometimes.
I sell stuff .. that is all
That sounds like drugs, but its not drugs.

My dad used to work for dupont(although not at such a shitty position). He hates them though:meh: He works for Philips now.
I'm in between jobs now, but until recently I used to work in a factory. We mainly produced concrete tiles and balcony's. Pretty shitty job, but the pay was too good.
Oh and I'll be back at uni in a month

I work at a company that originates/disburses/services student loans (1 of the top 10 in the US). I mainly update accounts from info sent in by guarantors, schools, or the borrowers themselves. The part I handle deals with enrollment changes, deferments/forbearances, repayment issues, loan verification requests (normally made by mortgage companies), and random pieces of mail that people send in.
I've been doing it for 2 years, and I'd like to get into something that is more rewarding or at least requires a little more thought. The money is OK ($25k/yr after 2 raises), but I'd like to get more so I can buy a condo. It's a good job I suppose. 2 weeks paid vacation, 1 week paid sick, free medical/dental/vision insurance, annual raise (normally 4%), christmas bonus, 401k contribution, relatively easy work, and like 13 paid holidays a year.
Edit: I forgot the most important part... they feed us constantly. ^_^
Ummm... high school student? :P

Free food? Hey, they do that at my job too!

March 2005-May 2005 - My first job was at a shitty coffee shop/cafe that was half owned by my dad. The job would have been great except for two things: I didn't get to do they job they hired me to do, and the place was a huge flop. It went down the toilet two weeks after I bailed ship. Pay was minimum wage. The only cool thing about this job was learning to use an espresso machine, and thus gaining the ability to make my own coffee drinks.
July 2005-August 2006 - Second job. My friend was moving to Florida, and knew I needed a job, so she offered it to me. The job was at Rice Garden, a Chinese "restaurant" found in Hen Houses, and perhaps Price Choppers. The food was great, and I got paid $7 an hour (raised to $7.35 in January, WOO!) for a job a trained monkey could do. I even got a free meal on every shift. During the year I worked there my hours fluctuated a lot, because my main boss would whore me out to other Rice Gardens. At one point I had three different bosses. I quit a week ago because I want my last few weeks of summer free before I head to Japan.
June/July 2006 - My friend's mom sometimes has oddjobs that need to be done and he never wants to do them alone, so he calls and asks if I'll help. It's usually pretty easy and more money, so I agree. The latest task was that of moving seven stacks of bricks. Each stack contained forty-five bricks, and each brick weighed ninety-one pounds. Not too much of a hastle. We started at $10 an hour, but after two stacks we found that we could get two done in a half hour or so, and negotiated the wage to $10 a stack.
I'm hoping that I can move up the job ladder a bit when I return in January.

I sell knives in people's living rooms. I only get paid when I actually go to someone's house and try to sell them something though, and getting people to sell to is extremely difficult so far, so I've been working from dawn to midnight straight every day since friday and made $52.50 so far. ;_;

You go into peoples homes, with knives, and you only come away with that much? worst thief ever!
Full time lazy person, job involves doing the absolute minimum work possible, commonly known as a student. Entering second year of university in september, studying Bsc Chemistry. Never had a job so far in my life, the tactic of putting it off using education is working nicely.

Another Job thread?
Well okay.
I work in a hospital. I find it okay, only I rather be working in a nursing position. I am a certified nurse assistant, but I have to be 18 to work there as one. How lame. So I got stuck working as a dietary aide. I help create diets for the patients, see what they can have and cannot, serve their food, and help feed them. I like my job, I love my co-workers, only problem is I hate.... HATE the morning shift.
Give me any shift and I won't mind, beside the morning one. I am not a morning person. I lack the will to concentrate which leads to many mistakes, in the morning. I do NOT want to make a mistake seeing how there is no room for mistakes here (example: I serve a supplement accidentally that contains sugar to a diabetic... the results will not be good). I have made a few mistakes, and each one was only in the morning. I never make mistakes any other time, you'd think they would get the hint, especially when I tell them I hate the morning shift. Meh. Also in the morning everyone is over 26. I am the youngest (17). In the afternoon and night, there is people my age and I also perfer to work with people my age. The morning staff complain and back talk everyone. I rather avoid that drama.
I do feel I have bragging rights. I am one of their best workers and the quickest.
I will be giving them a two weeks notice after next week, however. I have to go to school full time coming in September, so I am leaving them.

Ah, I thought there might have been another one on this forum. I searched through each page of General Discussion for "Work" and for "Job", though, and nothing came up. Apologies if one already exists.

Fed Ex package handler.
I move boxes.
Small boxes. Big boxes.
Pays 9 bucks an hour. I work 15 hours, from 6-9 A.M. I will continue to work at Fed Ex through college, since my schedule is late morning-late afternoon (either 10-4 monday and wednesday, or 11-3 tuesday thursday, I get out at 11 on fridays)
Whenever I have free days (vacation days and saturdays), I run with one of the truck drivers and run the packages to the door of the house or business. I make 60 bucks per day under the table plus free food, drinks, snacks, and cigarettes.

Yes, there was a thread just like this one a couple of months again. Tsk tsk Saitou :p.
That's okay.
Anyway, I have had numerous jobs. I have been fired from most of them because of REALLY shitty reasons. This last one was because all the supervisors wanted to get rid of me for no reason at all. I swear, I was like a model employee :|.
I've worked cleaning toilets at the fair, year before that I was cleaning shit off the ground at the fair, worked at 2 dining halls on campus(got fired from both of them :|), twice as a summer orientation leader, and also last year I worked with elementary school kids teaching them math. For the second time this year, and what has been my favorite job, I have worked with this group of high schoolers from Niigata Japan. I just took them around and did fun activities with them, all the while having them practice English with me. On Tuesday I am starting a brand new job shelving books in one of my uni's libraries. The pay is SHIT(the first time I have worked for min wage: ( ) but I should have a lot of hours. I am paranoid about being fired. I just have to try hard to be a model employee.

that's vector isn't it ? I got hired for that a few years ago not knowing what it was and then quit immediately after I discovered I had to go into peoples' homes that i knew.
I'm a consultant to the government as a documentation specialist and information resource manager. Recently, I believe my job title was changed to "Least Popular Person in the Department" due to the current computer migration.
The company that actually pays my checks is pretty nice. Good health care, you accrue vacation/sick time faster than bunnies procreate and the bosses like to have a good time.

I work as an international banking agent for Alliance and Leicester. I get £8.50 an hour. (which is like $16?). Most of the work involved is basic, such as inputting cheques in the inhouse system, caculating rates of different currencies. Liasing with our personal business customers and making sure their transactions to overseas companies go through fluidly. But the main duty is striking currency deals with customers and companies for exchange rates. We are talking about transactions for around $40million. (Highest deal we've made was around £77mil of one deal.) But its interesting to see if we can always increase our profit and reach new targets.
Although, as of 8th September, I will be leaving that job and moving to Sheffield to take up life as a fulltime student at the University of Sheffield. (no Leeds now.)

I'm a systems administrator for the University of Georgia, at least until I pay down my student debt enough to go for a PhD in computer science or logic or something. I run the software side of several computer labs totaling around 500-600 computers in this building (http://slc.uga.edu/), including a few classrooms. All Windows PCs, sadly. We're in the middle of moving from Novell to Active Directory, so things have been hectic lately.
But I'm happy because the University will be giving raises that exceed the inflation rate for the first time in years. All University employees except the executives and those very-low-salaried workers who were recently given a raise to a living wage have actually been making less "real" money each year for a while.

None of those. I work on automotive trade magazines. You have to be in the industry to get them. I used to be an Art Director for the NHRA magazine which was a bit more interesting.
If you want to write for the more fun stuff like drifting and import, you can freelance write for their magazines right now. Just submit some writing samples to the editorial directors of the magazines you're interested in and they can probably hook you up with something.
But I'll tell you now they usually prefer journalism majors over english majors.

Wow! You can do such a cool job without having graduated from university yet? No wonder a lot of people in the UK go straight into the world of work!
As for me, I'm a patent attorney prosecuting patent application with the US Patent Office for Japanese corporations. Not glamorous but pays very well. Patent law has been called "revenge of the nerds" hence the label above my avatar...

Yeah, but my interests lie in things outside of journalism too, that involve writing.
That being said, I'm considering a minor in journalism. :P
Any particular reason why journalism > English? Is it because of the more editorial/journalistic based writing basically?

Aye, apprenticeships, YTS worktrain and NVQ's are pretty popular over here! Mind you though, even if the money is good and the job is slightly interesting, I am not really satisfied with the job. I want to persue a career where I can use my experience and skill in languages. By this, I mean I would like to work in the field of translation, localisation, media or even a duty which involves going abroad alot. 45 hours a week of office paper work has definately got to me!:bang:

Yup. It's just a different format that they prefer. But it's not like you can't do both. I'd say as long as you got the writing skills, you'll do fine. But you should start trying to freelance now. At least to get your foot in the door.
