View Full Version : Free souvenirs, anyone?

I could put this in the Japan board for Japaneseishness or RWPW for randomness, but I decided to put it here for maximum exposure. :innocent:
Brief story: my year in Japan ends in one week. I have approximately 50,000yen in leftover scholarship money (cash!) to squander before I leave. I'm very good at spending money on myself, but I've been doing that all year...:frypan:...and the guilt is starting to catch up to me.
SO! To ease my conscience (and also because I really love buying presents for other people!) I will buy a small Japanese souvenir for anyone willing to give me their shipping address. Okay, I know my mere presence on the internet makes me five times more likely to be a child molester than not, and you'd have to be some kind of moron to give out your address to random people online. If you'd prefer to chat or Skype first or something, I can do that. If you'd rather I give you my address so you can mail me yours, that works too. I just need to know ASAP if anyone is actually interested.
RULES!
--I'm not buying stuff for anyone who's already in Japan or is scheduled to arrive within a year. I'd prefer to buy stuff for people who have never been here and aren't likely to come soon.
--The whole point is to buy Japanesey things you probably can't get in your own country. My first thought is always the ubiquitous cellphone charm in some kind of Japanese or Kyoto design (Hello Kitty dressed as a geisha, scraps of kimono fabric, Chinese zodiac animals, etc), but it could be anything small, cheap and shippable.
--Price of the items will depend on number of people.
--You don't all have to get the same thing.
--It's a gift; you don't have to pay me back! :)
Yes, I really am serious.

Wow. That's probably the nicest thing I've ever read on the internets - buying stuff for complete strangers.
Way to go, you very generous person, you. You just instantly made yourself one of the most popular users of this forum. Good luck with this.
Wouldn't you rather use it yourself to buy some awesome new clothes, though? You probably worked hard for that scholarship money.
Ooohhh... The offer of scraps of kimono fabric is seriously tempting for a quilter. Must fondle fabric...
It is extremely nice of you to offer this to strangers. I hope everyone who gets a souvenir pays it forward.

I have too many new clothes to fit in my suitcases. I have no idea where I found so many clothes that fit me in Japan. You don't even want to know how many socks I bought this year. And shoes. And scarves. And hats. And I want another yukata...:box:
The only thing more fun than shopping for me is shopping for someone else. Just ask Joey!

A few ideas off the top of my head:
--something cute with maiko/sakura/momiji/kingyo/Shinsengumi/zodiac animal on it
--a folding fan...from the 100yen store!
--a "handkerchief" (washcloth) with your name embroidered in kana
--stationery, postcards
--strange dried fish snacks, things that taste like green tea or cherry blossoms
--tabi socks :innocent:
--manga
--origami paper or scraps of old kimono/obi
--something made from chirimen (silk or rayon crepe, a popular souvenir from Kyoto)
--a protective charm from a temple
(edited out the more expensive ones...I didn't really expect so many people! No worries, though. :))
If you want to sacrifice all prerogative to me (muahahahahaaaa), just specify "girly", "manly", "neutral", "Kyoto-ish", "edible" or something like that.

Can you describe what a Protective Charm looks like? I mean is it a piece of paper or a wooden carving?
seiji
08-03-2006, 03:02 PM
O-mamori (protective charms) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O-mamori) vary by type and temple, but the most common type is a small pouch made of colorful tapestry, containing a piece of something with a prayer written on it (you just have to trust it's really there, since opening the pouch destroys its power). The specific power of the charm (traffic safety, studying, love, wealth, safe birth, etc.) and/or the name of the sponsoring temple is written on the outside. They're about the size of a keychain, and some are designed to be cellphone straps.
Other styles I've seen include a small gold coin (for wealth), a reflective magnet for your car (for traffic safety), a metal card (for safe travels), and a stylized key on a chain (symbol of Inari, god of the granary and all the wealth contained therin). I like the Inari key-charm necklaces, myself. :)

Wow, I'd really appreciate it if you could do that. If not, tabi would be cool if they make them large enough to fit someone who wears an American size 12, or, if not, something Kyoto-ish would be neat.

Porn mag from Family Mart, okay. But I need your address. :watson:
I'll probably bring these home and mail them from the US so the postage doesn't slay me. Everything so far is pretty small and light (except that porn mag), so that's not a problem yet.
I'm going to put a 24-hour lock on this so I can start shopping tomorrow. Except it's not exactly 24 hours. We'll say 12 hours from now, whatever time this is in your zone. And, yes, judging by the formula on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_size), a US men's size 12 is about 28 cm.
Wikipedia is wrong. I wear a 9 1/2, which is a 27 or 27.5, depending on the maker, here in Japan. A 12 is around 30 or bigger, I think....(usually don't think, actually) edit2: 30.5 on this site: http://www.i18nguy.com/l10n/shoes.html#adult
You could think about giving people the little turtle charm for their wallets (about 1/2in long, supposed to bring fortune when carried in the wallet - hasn't worked for me so far..).
Go to Daiso 100yen shop. The best quality of all the 100yen shops, and some (a few) good things for souvenirs.
edit: BTW, you're too cool, doing this for strangers. Come back to this forum, after you head back Stateside, huh?

In "Japan sizes", yes, but socks are measured by centimeters, not shoe sizes. According to this and numerous sites (http://www.asknumbers.com/ShoeSizeMensConversion.aspx), US men's 12 is a little longer than 28cm.
How about anyone who wants tabi socks just stands on a ruler to see how long their foot really is?
And 100yen shops do have suitable souvenirs, but I would feel cheap.

Official list of people whose personal contact information I have harvested for my own fell purposes (:innocent:):
anver: o-mamori, not girly
Daishikaze: small figurine of a tanuki or kitsune, or o-mamori
Donut: necklace/pendant, not girly
El_CJ: o-mamori, not girly
Ellie: something cute
Firefly: something cute (no address yet)
Fujin: something manly and/or funny
Jetsetlemming: manga, manly
Kass: o-mamori, girly
Kenshin: something manly
Lazarus: kitsune mask if possible (no address yet)
Mugen: cool Japanese chopsticks
Nights_into_dreams: o-mamori, not girly
Riinuka: tabi socks, white or black

Tibs: anything EXCEPT A BOMB
Unknown: o-mamori, girly
Xuande: unagi-pie, or tabi socks
ZaichikArky: postcard...
Since the protective charms (o-mamori) are so popular, people who didn't specify something else are likely to end up with one. I'll go to some temples tomorrow, so you technically have about 8 hours right now to change your mind.

There is some thing I've never EVER run across in any store in the U.S., yet I had one somehow years ago.(gift from a friend) A Japanese Abacus. It looks like the normal one except that it's arranged in a 1 and 4/5 arrangement(no placeholder piece(s)!) I suspect that it's probably easy to find there for next to nothing. Even shopkeepers in Little Tokyo look at me with a blank stare when I mention it. It's obviously a specific Japanese word, but one they've never hear of before. :)

I got a letter from ellie! She sent me a cute magnet of the University of North Carolina mascot, which is almost treason for a UGA student. :D Good thing UNC isn't in the SEC or it'd probably be illegal for me to put that magnet on my fridge.
And Xuande bought me ice cream! Now I've met somebody from the internets irl! :O
Xuande

The tabi fit just fine =) Now I just need to find a pair of geta that will fit my big feet...
Hope you enjoyed the ice cream! It was nice meeting you.

I WANT TO MEET SOMEONE FROM HERE IN REAL LIFE!! I am jealous! Haha. Well, at least you don't go to Duke or something, that would be real treason for you to have a UNC magnet, then! I know someone at UGA! Dude, are you like not on facebook wtf?

Ellie, you... me... meet NOW! :karate:
I got your gift Seiji. Very cute. ^^ I hung it up on my key chain hook so I see it everytime I turn on the light or shut it off or whenever I walk out of my room.

I got a call from my uncle at noon:
Him: Hi, [Kenshin]? How are you? Do you have a friend in the U.S. called [Seiji]?
Me: (Yaaaaaaaay, I got mail, I got mail!) Umm... Yup. Why do you ask?
Him: I just got mail from her today, but I though it was for me.
I gave Seiji my uncle's name and address since I was moving.
Me: Um... really? Thanks!
Him: You're welcome. By the way, I opened it.
Me: O_O (Oh shit! I hope it's not porn, I really hope it's not porn... wait, what am I thinking?)
My aunt in the background: And I'm keeping it!
Me: (Phew.. it's not porn.) ...what is it?
Him: Come by later and you'll see.
Me: >_>... alright. I'll go there later. Thanks again.
Now I'm just waiting for him to arrive. Thanks a lot, Seiji. ^_^
I'll post pictures as soon as I get it. *still thinking what to send*
Edit: Finally! (and no, it wasn't porn.:innocent:)

got mine a long time ago, I would have said so sooner, but the lightning Bolt killed my Computer and it took forever to get everything sorted out with my Insurance.
Seiji, Thank you very much, it was exactly what I wanted. I'll see if I can find something suitably Swiss to send you in return
