View Full Version : How do you pronounce your screen name?

4letterwords
09-03-2005, 05:44 PM
There's a bunch of screen names that I have this pre-set pronounciation for, even though I know thats not how you pronounce them. For example: Meenerdjik (sp?) whenever I see that name I say like *Meen her dick*...

Praetorian (sp?) I think of Preh tohr een.

Theres more, like Pierriot (sp?) which I say "Pehr ee ought lay foo"

How do you pronounce these names, and any other strange names on the board?

- I know this thread is stupid, but I was thinking about this earlier and I wanna know :P

I'd pronounce them "Me nerd jeek" and "Pray tohr ian" with "Pee air eeyot"

EDIT:
Oh, yeah.

"Ark han Teh ra"

Praetorian (sp?) I think of Preh tohr een.

I think it's pronounced: Pray-Tor-Ian

He named himself after the Roman Emperor's elite gaurd. Like the secret service is to the President.

Praetorian

Jiant Panda is correct. Pay attention while seeing 'the Gladiator'... They get mentioned a few times at the beginning. :)

It's hard to explain how to pronounce 'Meneerdijk'. You'd have to hear it.

Closest is 'Men-ihr Dyke". It means "Misterdijk", 'Dijk' being his last name.

Also, I think the last 't' of Pierrot might be silent, although you'd have to wait for him to reply if that's true.

Marhkavafaragr-blelororou-He(click your tongue with the furthest back part of your mouth)-adou(r/l sound).

It's pretty close but you'd have to hear it to get it exactly right. There's also a little dance involved but that's only done on formal occasions.

All the Japanese names are easy. Shouldn't be any questions about them since Japanese pronunciation is so regular.

And 'Pierrot' is French, so it's 'Pee-eh-ro.' It's also a Japanese loanword. 「ピエロ」. Means 'clown.' I dunno about the rest, though. He said it's from an anime.

Pee-err-oh luh (french short e is closer to an unvoiced english 'u' than 'e' in my opinion, but best bet would be to pronounce it in the French way) Foo

And 'fou' does not mean fool, it means mad/crazy/insane.

It's from Jean-luc Goddard -- not Cowboy Bebop.

It's pretty hard to state which phoneticization is correct considering that we're not using truly recognized symbols for different sounds. We'd all have to have the same English dialect and pronunciation for that, and I guarantee you that we don't.

Maybe it's difference in dialects, but I don't see how this can be...It's really weird, actually. Almost all native-spanish-speakers have that exact pronunciation (the one I mentioned before). Even I say it like that (or even then, it may be the central and south american pronunciation. Mixing it with english may or may not change the pronunciation of some letters...)I forgot, do Venezuelans speak Portugese?Nope. In Latin America, Brazil is the only country that speaks portuguese (and even then, it's not really portuguese; it's actually Brazilian). And on that subject, I don't really speak spanish, I speak castellan. (Spanish is only spoken in Spain).

Anyway, carry on...

Myrsilus
09-07-2005, 03:52 AM
Yeah it's probably a regional thing. And Brazilians do speak Portuguese... Spain never claimed that area. =\

Tch... Spanish is in Spain... Technicalities. I guess our Spanish is Tex-Mex.

Anyway, that's settled.

Pierrot le Fou
09-07-2005, 04:04 AM
Well, considering that you can have 's' pronounced as 'th' in some Spanish dialects (castellano vs. cathtellano), and 'y' pronounced as 'j' in others (yo vs. jo [Argentina]), I wouldn't put it past there being different ways to say 'Juan.'

I would describe the first sound in 'Juan' to be a 'wh' sound as in 'what' or 'whale' which is a little different from the 'w' sounds in 'won' or 'week.'
