View Full Version : There is something that has been bothering me

Fellow members of op9,
There is something that has been bothering me for a while. There is growing feeling of hostility on this board…and it makes me sad. I understand that not everyone can get along… but we could try to be nicer to each other. If you have an argument with someone, try to work it out like normal people.
Don’t say mean things that are not necessary at all and also hurt other people’s feelings.
Maybe I sound like a little child now, but I just don’t want the community to fall apart. I like this board and it makes me sad that things are going this way now.
I hope you all understand. I really don’t mean to offend anyone. I just want OP9 to stay a happy and peaceful place!
Much love

I agree with you Shan.
I've noticed that many of the posts are going down hill and becoming down right mean and rude.
The same thing has been happening on the IRC as well (or was happening a few weeks ago).
I don't know if it's growing pains or what, but it also makes me very sad.
It would be nice if everyone would stop hiding behind their computer screens and actually have alittle respect for their fellow members, things might get better, but I guess that isn't always possible. =/
My guess is that the good people will get tired of it (if it doesn't stop) and eventually just stop posting. I've come close several times. :gloomy:

I also noticed an increase in hostility towards eachother. People get personal in discussions and the normally light harted RWPW turns into a flame fest. This has got to stop. It increases my workload too, and throwing bans around doesn't improve the athmosphere on this forum. So i hope people will show some restraint and solve their squabbles in a respectful manner.

I can admit to taking part in a few, and I can make an honest effort to try to avoid them from here on out.
I would like to say though I've made an honest effort already though to try and speak intellectualy with at least a couple of the people I've argued with.
Unfortunately, I can not honestly say that for either of them it has gone the other way around. Regardless, I can learn to be the bigger man and just add them to my ignore list if I feel they've really become to ignorant to speak or listen to as I've done with a couple members already.

I've noticed there's a lot of condescending pricks here, and at first that bothered me, but after thinking about it I've come to the decision that I like it that way. See, because I don't like people acting like something they're not. Nothing bothers me more than when people aren't being genuine.

I think the first step to starting to deflate the problem is to try and not put hostile statements in this thread itself.
Embers like this begin the flamefest. While I'll try to take this to heart when it happens to me, please try to just let it go just this once here and now to show you're both making an honest effort to contribute to what's trying to be accomplished in this thread.

I have found that if you behave in a polite manner, or at least neutral, that you will rarely have any problems with others.
And if someone antagonizes you despite your efforts, just ignore them. People that feel the need to assert their superiority over others tend to be insecure, and they thrive off putting others down. If you do not feed them, they will go away.
It's so simple, but of course noone listens, because everyone has to have the last word.
And if someone antagonizes you despite your efforts, just ignore them. People that feel the need to assert their superiority over others tend to be insecure, and they thrive off putting others down. If you do not feed them, they will go away.
I take this as a pledge and it's been mentally signed by me. Anyone else care to do so?

On a more serious note, I really haven't been that bad. I have pretty much just been joking around, whereas others have genuinely been antagonistic to me and others. I would say that PCP is quite the offender; Mr. Humphry (douche-bag trolling noob) is not without his sins; PlF has probably been the most antagonistic person on these fora, but people laugh it off saying, "Oh, it's PlF up to his nutty antics again. What a crazy goof-ball!"; and Crowley has hardly once issued a serious statement. I find that Crowley really does nothing but criticize and mock, really. But it's okay. I find it all to be quite enjoyable.
In a world where pretty much everything is censored and there's very little that can be said due to considerations of what's p.c., it's nice to have a forum like this where you can say what you wish with impunity and where you can joke in a manner that wouldn't be socially acceptable in the real world.
Let's not get our panties in knot over a few relatively harmless jokes...

Although I will admit that I'm getting frusrated with the fact that in my more recent thread some people have been trying to start flame wars over prejudice that they imagine I have. i.e.: I mentioned a trend I noticed in J-doramas and somebody runs their mouth off asking why I think American dramas are better even though I never mentioned American dramas... stop that shit, seriously.

It'd be ok if you were funny. But really you aren't. You flames, retorts and insults are dime a dozen crap you'd see anywhere. Theres nothing original about what you have to say, nothing stylish about how you do your thing.
You're boring. Thats the problem. If you flamed creatively, did something interesting, people may not have an issue.

To be honest, the largest problem I have with you seems to be your mean-spirited attacks upon other people, alongside your statements about homosexuality. It's fine to not like it and voice your opinion, but calling people "fags" is abit over the line (not to mention against the rules of the forum, I believe).
Be willing to stop being so mean-spirited against other people, and I'd be more than happy to try to get along with you, kk? :)

Firslty, the notion that you think you have friends here is perfectly laughable. I sincerely doubt that you have even a one. And I know that you don't have any in real life (I've seen pictures of you).
Secondly, you seem to have made two very grave errors. I haven't come here to flame and neither have I come here to entertain you.
Thirdly, you have used the leeto word, n00b, and I laugh in your face for it.
Fourthly, my retorts and insults are meant to be stupid. That's kind of the point. That's the joke and if you don't like, well, I don't know what to say really, since I don't think to myself as I am writing them, "how can I make my posts funny enough for the standards of the disturbingly ugly loser PCP?"
Finally, I think that in that very post of yours, you proved what a douche of a flamer and troller you are, gloating over your defeat of CrazyAce - a decent, caring, and actually creative individual who had more of a place on this forum that you ever did or ever will.

I don't have anything against gay people. That was the point I was trying to make. Tibs had made a post using the word "faggot" in a derogatory way and I was offended so I said what I did about them to get the point across that using the word "fag"/"faggot" in the manner in which he did was entirely unacceptable.

Again, not my job to entertain or impress, but as long as you seem to think that its everyone's incumbency to impress and entertain one another, I should say that you don't do a very good job of it yourself. I have never seen you say ANYTHING funny and I'm not just saying that to insult you.

You continue to return to the insult that I am "nobody". You have used that repeatedly and not just in this thread - which I don't really understand, since I really haven't done anything that should have given you the impression that I fear being a "nobody". 99.9999 % of the people on this planet are nobodies. If they can tolerate it, I can.
It seems that that may be a particular sore spot for you, since you keep bringing it up? Perhaps you weren't well-liked in high-school? I dunno'.
Also, that you may not persist in your delusion, let me say that to be a "somebody" here on OP9 really is still to be a "nobody". I am sure that you don't have people stopping you on the street, saying, "ZOMG! It's you, PCP. You're awesome 'cause you're well-known on OP9 and 'cause you've been on OP9 longer than Paideuo - that douche whom I have already forgotten." The fact that you've been here longer than I really just speaks to what a sad character you are; it speaks naught as to whether I am a loser or a person without merit or not
P.S. I guess it's okay to be an ass and flamer when a person's sig is too large - to the extent of the person leaving, no less - but when you just want to joke around and have fun it's a problem. Makes sense.

I really have noted no hostility other than the n00b trolls usual antics, and I think it's just because we've had more of them lately. Sometimes, the more you ban them, the more they come back with new names and more trolling. It just depends on whether you laugh it off or take it seriously like members are in this thread. This might be too old school for many of you, but do you remember this commercial in the late 70's/early 80's about pollution? There was this Indian standing on the side of the freeway, looking over the polluted landscape. A car drives by, and they toss some litter, which lands at his feet. Camera pans up to catch a teardrop falling from the Indian's eye. Right now, I could picture Mahatma Ghandi, standing somewhere in the parking lot, surveying this scene, with the fucking teardrop rolling down his cheek.
And I imagine the OP reading this thread with the same reaction. Stop flaming, and if you have a problem with someone take it to PM, or something, but at least get it the spork out of this thread... please?

I am sure everyone here has knows, or knows of, at least one aggressive person that likes to engage in physical altercations a lot.
People that tend to behave this way tend to do so because they are insecure. They do not constantly fight because they are tough as most people probably believe, but rather the opposite, their aggression stems from their insecurity. They fight to prove themselves. To control others because they cannot control themselves.
Now compare such a person to a competent martial artist. I'm not saying they are all the same, but from my experience, I can tell you that for the most part, martial artists are some of the nicest, most courteous, and most respectful people you will ever meet.
Do you know why that is? Because martial arts inspire confidence in practitioners. And because they are confident, they are much less aggressive, and therefore more respectful of others.

Oh. This forum is nice. I like everyone. It is one of the few and favorite websites I go to daily. I love op9. Very close. Almost like a little e-family. I wish everyone could get along and things could be nice and happy, but that isn't always the case. We can all try to get along, or we can be more responsible and use the ignore feature and not go to a level of flaming another individual. Lets just enjoy eachothers posts and be kind and considerate and open about each and every persons posts and opinions. :)
Rudeness should not occur and shall not be tolerated. Also I think Matt is doing a great job. I think we can all help him by not involving ourself in flames and eaily ignoring the problem before it becomes something huge! There is a report option you know. Skip over someone who is being rude. And be a good person, if you feel you want to discuss something with someone or feel there is a problem, PM them. It is simple. Don't make it public and into a problem. PMing is important ladies and gentleman lets make use of that! Discuss the matter like grown adults/teenagers and responsible people. All this hostility can be avoided.

Perhaps this belongs in the 'dearth of content' thread, but I'm going to say it here. In my opinion, this is exactly the reason why there is so little quality posting activity as of late. It is nigh impossible to hold any sort of discussion without it rapidly devolving into utter crap as either two or more wankers decide to engage in a dick duel or some funny man decides to derail the thread with some exceedingly poor attempts at offensive humor.
When I found that even my own posts were becoming about as inciteful as they were insightful, I decided that it just wasn't worth it anymore. So now I'm back to just lurking for the most part.

I think a certain amount of hostility and different opinions is needed- what's the fun if everyone agrees on everything, and always gets along? I like reading debates...I would prefer it if everyone didn't agree. I admit, I do find trolls funny. Bob was hilarious.
However, personal attacks and continued flaming are a bit over the top...there is no need to call people harsh names or flame every thread they make and/or post in.
I also think people are very sensitive on this forum. One small spark of rude feelings and someone is getting hurt...it seems like nobody is really "taking a joke" anymore. :meh:
One thing I used to like about OP9 is that in one thread, two people could totally be going over the top on a debate and even exchanging harsh words...and joking around and having fun in another. It seems like that doesn't happen very much anymore...enough with the grudges already!
Like Shannon, said, hopefully the forum is just PMS-ing and we'll go back to normal soon :blank:

Sorry, I wanted to get that out of the way. I'm generally a lurker on the boards, so I've really never noticed if someone's being mean to someone else or not. I've exchanged my share of harsh words at least once, but I don't think some jackass would force me to leave. Jackasses with a superiority complex and think they could jump on people's backs and give them a hard time over nothing is what makes me want to leave (not this community of course). I've seen it on other forums I've been a member of in the past, and quite frankly, I'm sick of it. The reason I came here was to get away from those idiots in the first place.
On a side note, why do three people (possibly more) have the same avatar? Is this some joke I haven't been around for? Really, it's pretty confusing when you identify someone with a certain avatar and then that avatar is being used by others.

Something most people could do to learn. Saracasm (among other things) does NOT translate well into text. If that is what you are going for, be careful because it will more than likely be taken the wrong way.
paideuo, you especially should be careful because from what I have seen of your "humor" it is heavily based in cutting sarcastic remarks about people and touchy subjects. It is VERY difficult to tell if you are being serious or not. Since you wrote it you know what you meant, but most others do not. Just keep that in mind.

Why is the word "humour" in quotations? Are you insinuating that I am not funny or that I am being a douche and later conveniently sweeping resulting issues under the rug by referring to my remarks as mere humour and facetiousness? :)
Anyways, point taken.
For the record, my style of humour is joking-about-joking, inconspicuously self-deprecating foolishness.

If ever I enter into a thread and bring up inappropriate topics and things that don't relate to the discussion at hand, it's usually because I don't find the thread interesting or intelligent, or the opinions and ideas expressed in it insightful or reflective of profound understanding, and, consequently, don't have anything to say concerning the topic at hand. Boredom gets the better of me and I try to shift peoples' attention away from things that bore me to things that are slightly more interesting to me. Remember my wishes are paramount and that, although the majority should wish to talk of this or that, if I don't want to, we're not gonna'. (j/k) I guess I am a troll of sorts, but not an intentionally malicious one. I am just a bored individual who wants others to entertain me, but, as I said in my other posts in this thread, it isn't your duty to do so; I just want you to do so. So do it!

If people have a notion about you already as a troll, its because essentially you are very new and came on swinging. There wasn't much else to think. Fine it might be your own sense of humour, but you left no time for establishment or for people to get to know you before you started attacking people and making harsh jokes, derailing threads, for your own amusement.

I can only argue with you on one point and that is that I am not attacking people. The only three people whom I have come any near attacking in serious manner are you (definitely), Tibs, and PlF (definitely).
Actually, there were more, but I was just defending myself in their cases. These people I retaliated against in the beginning when I had first started posting on these fora when I got into that argument with PlF. I don't really count them. But if you must know, they were: Decade, Angelyne, Crowley... I forget the rest...

Well, it's just that, as people are saying in the "The Dearth of Content" thread, there really aren't any quality threads anymore. That's the reason I see myself as having to derail threads. Still no reason to mess with other peoples threads. You only created three threads like a month ago. Try creating a serious one where you discuss the topic with people without trying to be a funny troll. You'll get a lot more respect from people. Try it, it's refreshing. However, if this forum us just a place for you to play around and disturb threads, then you aren't welcome.

Is it the case that purposeful derailment of a thread is necessarily subsumed under the label of "trolling"? Why not "zany," "off-topic," or "non-sensical"? All three of those words are included in the description of TRWPW.
I think a troll is characterized by malicious intent. I haven't been purposefully malicious. That's why I said "I am something of a troll" and not "I am a troll". By 'something,' I meant that I display some of the outward characteristics of a troll without really being one as to my intent. In my opinion, I am not a troll, unless 'purposeful derailment' absolutely always falls under "trolling" - in which case, I would have to think of myself as being such.

Purposeful derailment, in all sub forums including RWPW, has been an issue on this board before. The general consensus is don't do it, especially don't force it for your own amusement.
Why did you try and derail Meneers popsicle thread? Because you didn't like it? Others did, so what right did you have trying to change it because you didn't?
People have been banned before for continuoly derailing threads and going off topic. Eg Jay, who got three temp bans in a month for it.

Perhaps, but I really can't say that I do that in sub-fora other than TRWPW where I thought such things to be welcomed or at least welcomed to a greater extent that they would be elsewhere.
Why did you try and derail Meneers popsicle thread? Because you didn't like it? Others did, so what right did you have trying to change it because you didn't?
I didn't have a right to change it, but I wanted to. It doesn't have to change, if you don't want it to. The consensus feeling about a thread is what's most important. If I make an attempt to change the topic of the thread, and it changes, I can not be blamed since that is clearly what is desired by the participants. Since the topic did not change, we can safely say that others did not feel the same way and did not agree with me. They handled it wisely and made it clear what they wanted the thread to be about.
The reason I did it is that I thought that that would be a great thread in which to make a point about the nature of OP9 and it's deterioration. It is afterall expedient that one should have examples close at hand of the thing he is decrying. (No offense to you, meneer. I hope you don't take that personally. It's not a reflection on you. I keep hearing things about "most other forums" and stuff, and people talking about how things are done on other forums, yada yada yada, so on and so forth and the thing that alot of new people don't understand (and even some old people that haven't gotten it yet) is that, this isn't like most other forums.
That's why most of us like it here. There's been some strong bonds and friendships formed here, that don't really happen on other boards (I'm a member of several, both big and small forums, and they are NOTHING like this place).
We don't shun new people, but there is somewhat of an order here and to be able to get away with things (Such as Pooka does), you need to gain our respect first. Tibs has done it in a relatively short time and he gets away with many silly things now, because he was smart enough to figure out the order.
We're not really a normal forum, we're more like a highly disfunctional family and there are alot of sensitive people here (myself included, and no, I will not get over it. I like my sensitive self) because we do care about the others and we dont' like to see people getting attacked.
Having said that, I also agree with Firefly that debate is good. It wouldn't be fun if we all agreed (hell, even Meneer and I don't agree all the time :P), but there is a line between debate and just down-right disprespectfulness and meaness. I think we all forget that everyone here is an actual person (unless you're Random, who I believe to be AI :D) who may or may not care about what other people say, but it's obvious when you involve yourself in a flame war, that you do care, or you would just walk away from the thread/discussion. Too many people need to get the last word in and it just makes me want to kick your asses and tell you to stfu, because who really cares? If you've lost, you've lost, go off and lick your wounds without whining about it here.
On that note, the internets is serious business...I get so sick of that phrase sometimes. Yes, the internet is meant to be an informative, boredom breaker, whatever, and people have the right to say whatever they want here (blah blah blah) but it's a much nicer place when people have some respect for eachother.
On another note, while Matt is here with me in Texas, I get to hold the ban stick for a bit \o/ (if I'm really nice to him), so be prepared, because I am evil and not nearly as nice as people think I am. :D :karate:

Actually, Paideuo, I like sarcastic humor, I like cutting into people where appropriate, I enjoy put-downs. But there are three rules I follow:
1)Don't hijack other people's conversation - that's rude in real conversation, rude here.
2)Try to keep the humor related to the subject at hand - non-sequitors are annoying.
3)Try to be inventive or at least original
Some of your jokes I've liked (a few were actually LOLs). But some are just too out there, too offensive, or just so unrelated to the matter at hand that I can't catch it. In another context it might be funny, just not at that point.
If you're bored, don't trash someone else's conversation. - That's what my 6-yr-old son does....

I fuck Flaming Shoryuken brains. FIGHT THE PROLETARIAT.
Anyway, I think these forums have always been rather rude and filled with arguments. That's just how these forums are. We're allowed the freedom to express our opinions with a little bit of flame. That's just how we feel strongly about something. I can't really speak for people on the forums, but I doubt anyone would REALLY wish harm for another forum goer in real life, or really hates them, but that's just how we are as people. Maybe we're just a unique group of people that have brains and balls. In any case, what would we accomplish if we were nicer? More unity? Please, these forums are already more tightly knit than my sister's fedora hats. And that woman can knit.
The point is, people on these forums will always be condescending, intelligent, random, but we're still friends in the end. That's the essence of outpostnine. It's got its own atmosphere, kind of like how 4chan does...though that's not to say 4chan and OP9 are alike at all.
Anyway, as far as outpostnine and I go, I'm about as subtle and fitting in this place as an airhorn in a library.

Paiduo ...... If you're saying those insults you said to people were all sarcastic like jokes not really meant to offend... really I think stuff like that should be saved until after you know people better. I don't go walk up to someone I just met and say "haha you're such an asshole!" The relationship needed to find humor in that really isn't there between me and that person yet. Also, just as much as you take cracks at people you should make compliments too, even if they too are a bit sarcastic... think of the jokes told at a roast.... end it with something nicer... let them get you back (and don't keep replying forever with more insults in order to have the last word)
Even if you had been watching the boards for a while you haven't posted very consistantly and really haven't made any relationships with the people you insulted as far as I can see.... so .. really you should know better than to try and insult these people jokingly

I really think that the only reason I have been garnering your attention of late is that I just got me this nifty new avatar. I have been here for some time and noone had really said much to me or about me prior to the advent of the awesomeness of my avatar - notwithstanding the period of time when I went by the name of 流液天を射し込む怪光なり (a name which I admitted to being lame, but I didn't care at the time because I thought that I would need it only long enough to get a response to my question concerning Japanese.) That actually fits with my theory, though. Whenever I have something flashy and notably awesome going on, people get jeeealous and start to flame me... People waz' jealous of my cool-ass classical japanese name, so they flamed me into a new name so as not to have competition.

Tis a conspiracy, no?

A conspiracy motivated by blindingly intense jealousy - jealousy of my fantastic avatar and, before, of my awesomely awesome handle. This world is a world filled of sad, desperate, and lost souls. It makes me sad now to know that there are people so pathetic and bitter as to treat me poorly upon the realization that my avatar/name kicks their avatar's/name's ass. :gloomy: Woe is me! Here such a coil! Wherefore art ye such stupid bitches? (a tribute to Bob who was mediocre at best.)

I was bored so I thought I would make a case against your irrational belief that Bob was funny:
Bob's Greatest Hits (from the month of March) (http://www.outpostnine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4104&highlight=Bob%27s+Greatest+Hits)
I disagree. But humor is all a matter of perspective anyway, right?
IMO, the lack of Bob, amongst other things, is related to the fact that this place has been pretty boring for nearly two months now. I mean, the new trolls are nice and all, but they don't really make me laugh as much as feel sad for the fact that they need constant attention to make up for the fact that they're not getting any in real life. I'm sure Bob had those same issues, he just hid them behind the laughter...that sweet, sweet laughter.

What in the hell is Neon Genesis?
Okay, I have to admit that some of those were pretty funny. Most notably:
-----
you also know youre in america when rich white kids think they can pull off the whole "im poor and from the ghetto so i can talk like an idiot and have a major denial as to which race i really am"
As opposed to the rich asian, black and hispanic kids who do the same?
Just kidding, there are no rich hispanics
The best.

But do you not have drugs in your possession while using them?
You could find a line of cocaine on a park bench and snort it without ever posessing it
-----
All the technology we develop is supposed to make us more connected to one another and all it really does is push REAL human contact further and further away.
lolz ur retardeded
----
Perhaps the two nuclear weapons dropped on Japan had their own religion too, hmm ?
So, youre saying the bombing of japan was evil?
----
neither, Bob, I have experience in none of them. You on the other hand are Jack of all Trades in this situation, I should be asking your advice.
Your mom likes it when I bukkake her, but so does your dog, so im not sure
----
Nope. I play hockey and football and am crude and weigh 200 pounds, yet am only 5' tall. I like to eat live bugs and roll in the dirt.

What new trolls? People keep using the word "trolls," but the only person who even approaches that, as far as I know, is me.

Not so much a troll as much as I easily get annoyed, and sometimes i cannot be bothered to hold it back and openly flame people.
Unjustified, yes.
But so was the trolling that provoked me.
