The amount of daily posts here seems to be rapidly decreasing. Is it just me? How can we make this site a better vehicle for wasting time on a quiet day at work?

I have been noticing it too. But I haven't been posting so often lately as well, because the end of the summer semester is so busy here. I used to check the site like thirty times a day, but in the last couple of weeks, I'm lucky if I find the time to check it once a day.

Eh, it's summer. Many members are out and about, doing other things. Once late August rolls around, the forum will be much more active, being posted in from classrooms worldwide.

Hey, I'm still posting at my usual rate. Of course, that equals an average of once every couple of weeks, so...
Hmmm...free porn, maybe?
We need some topics that the really opinionated people can sink their teeth into. In the vein of being really constructive - I have no idea what those might be!

RWPW seems to be maintaining it's usual speed of daily posts.
However, for those of you more intellectually-minded (or just less easily entertained by the silliness of RWPW), I'm not sure what to suggest for you. . .prizes for most brilliant post of the day? Just kidding. You have to give to receive, isn't that some quote? Post more and maybe you'll get more posts in return.
What I'd like is for the Creativity Forum to have more posts and people reading. There's some really good material in there, but I think a lot of people just don't visit it at all.

If you want the forum to be more active, then start more discussions. If that doesn't work, then I would guess it means most people are like me in that they have little to say.

Well, World War III is off to a nice start in the Middle East (things will pick up when India starts bombing Pakistan in retaliation for the train bombings). Soon we'll have endless topics of discussion- gas rationing, the crash of the stock markets (they're already tanking nicely), US invading Iran, Syria, Lebanon, or North Korea (or just bombing them).

That's what I love about you erbium -- you're the perennial optimist. Things are looking up for the forum! (but down for the world...)
Maybe I'm just jaded.

I may need a new country in which to hide for the remainder of the war (assuming we still have a viable planet).
I am the first rat to leave any sinking ship so my pessimism has served me well.
Maybe the Japan first strike at North Korea is looking better and better (too bad for Seoul, which will then be overrun by the North Korean army).
It's now looking like Iran is throwing itself into the mid-east war, so that will give George Bush all he needs to bomb their "nookular" facilities.

I agree that RWPW has caused me to lose a couple of brain cells in the past week, but everywhere else seems to be going pretty slow...the IRC has been pretty bad too.
If it's a dry spell, I'm sure things will kick up soon. :watson:

The forum is drying up because we have no "newbie hose". It's not linked from the japanese teacher site, only outpost9 - as most traffic goes to gaijinsmash, most new people don't see these forums.

Should I advertise at some big forums? D: Like Adult Swim Message Boards? D:
It's summer in the US and I've noticed that posting on message boards always declines during the summer. Vacations, nice weather and such actually draw people away from their computers.

I don't wish to sound the heretic, but this place ain't exactly easy for noobie posters to casually break into. There is too much of a clique that lead to me, at least, lurking for the most part rather than posting.
Just like the new kid coming to school half way through the 3rd year, nobody wants to know unless hes different or cool!

Nah, I noticed that, because, well I think I may be part of that clique. And I admit I used to hate the noobies coming in, but now I'd rather them come in. It seems more and more of our frequent posters are dropping out and leaving us D: we need more posters! Busy forums are good for Joey! JOEY HUNGY FOR ENTERTAINMENT! D:

I don't go into the Creativity forum because I don't want to feel embarrassed for the people who submit work there. When I feel embarrassed for someone, the pain is as acute as if the embarrassment were my own. So, in essence, just to open a thread in that forum is to feel personally embarrassed.
I will admit that there is some good stuff there, but that doesn't mean everything is. The fact that not everything is good means I have to sift through some painful shit, before I find the gems, and it's just not worth it
Edit: For all of you clever people out there: No, I'm not saying that my creative efforts would be any more fruitful or respectable, but that still doesn't mean that what's in the creativity forum is good. At least I have the sense not to put my shit up for the world to see and adjudge a stinking pile of dog poo.

Not that I ever posted much of worth or anything, but I haven't had much time to check the site as of lately because I got into my top choice med school in the States and am busy finishing up work here, preparing to move back to home, securing financial aid, etc. Bleh. This forum is a great respite so I hope to see more interesting characters pop up on here.

Well on these forums alot of people probabally haven't posting because Azreal was on vacation and as such there was no new editorials on either of his websites for people to discuss. For the last month I have been simply checking the site seeing that it hasn't been updated and moved on without stopping by the message board but now we have new editorials so here I am.

Well... some of the discussions people start seem to be up for no reason. Some people are trolling. And aside from the scary world news, perhaps people don't have so much to say?
MNJetter

I know what you.
What? :)
Paideuo, I think you are feeling the pain felt by any editor at any publishing company out there, particularly those that publish fiction. And particularly those that publish fiction that has a cult following and attracts fanfiction. I mean, there might be a decent fanfiction or two out there in the world, but I have physically cringed at some of the stuff on even the big and famous sites like fanfiction.com. (note to other OP9-ers, I have never actually browsed the Creativity section, and so this is not a comment on anybody's work. I assume most of the stuff here isn't fanfiction anyway, and so this probably wouldn't apply)
Sometimes I wonder if I could take my English major and become an editor at one of my favorite publishing companies. I actually like editing stuff. But then I think, do I really want to start at the bottom of the food chain and be the person who has to spend 8 hours a day reading through stuff submitted by people who think that being a [insert film/comic/game of choice] fanatic automatically gives them writing talent and the ability to weave a plot, and the right to steal characters? *shudder*
I have written a little minor fanfiction myself, but I know better than to show it to people. If I show people something creative I do, it will be original and I will be damn sure that it's no longer a rough draft.
On a different topic, I think that the posting will take another little jump upward again when something exciting happens in the world. Not "ooh, somebody lobbed a missile over everybody's head," but something truly original, or something that actually affects people on this board. You can kinda tell when people are grasping for conversation, and it doesn't do wonders for encouraging people to continue with it. Nothing at stake in discussing it, aside from possible hurt feelings and flames. I think there's nothing wrong with a little silence once in a while. If I'm hanging out with a friend and we simply quit talking for a few minutes, I don't interpret that as uncomfortableness or losing the ability to converse. We simply have nothing to say, and so we don't bother to say anything. Perhaps right now, people simply don't have anything interesting to say.

I'll be back in two year and damnit, I'm gonna stay then. Mofo'in navy and their desire to move people around.

That's a hint for upcoming future events in the life of MNJetter.
Anyway, I'd have to agree with the whole "Nothing to say" explanation. A lot of stuff in GD is interesting but I don't have much to add; A lot of stuff has been said already and debated to death in All Things Japan, and I rarely go into the other derivative forums.
I'd also agree that the lack of exposure of the forum recently is a factor.

OP9's forums aren't nearly as closed to newcomers as BigDaikon.com's. If OP9 is 3rd-year high school, BD is junior high. People here, in general, seem a lot more welcoming than other boards.

Even those who are new could have a whole lot to offer as some posters have shown in the past.

I guess it depends on which part of BD. Unlike OP9, the level of friendliness varies wildly by each section of the board. "Incoming and Potential JETS" is fine, with rarely a self-important troll in sight. "Speak Your Mind" is a different beast entirely.
