It seems you can now make babies without having sex, among other things, thanks to stem cell research.
Not quite yet. Those mice had, among other complications, difficulty breathing.

I realize that, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the process is perfected.
True, although this still requires a fertilized egg to harvest a sperm stem cell off of.

If they were to take stem cells that had begun to develop into the ovarian system, they could encourage it to mature, then harvest (an) egg(s).
Take the artificial sperm, and then bingo.
Knowing that female mammals are usually born with all of the precursor cells to every egg they will produce should make it easy for scientists to pinpoint them and harvest.
Just my 2 cents.

Haven't you heard of cloning and invetro-fertilization (or however you spell that)? None of that requires sex.

He meant without two people together making the baby. Cloning isn't a form of reproduction at it's current stage at all; it's taking an already impregnated embryo and replacign the nucleus, thus changing the DNA. (pretty sure that's how it works, I might be slightly rusty on the subject). Invitro fertilization is when they take the sperm and the egg, have them combine outside the mother in a lab, then implant it. It still requires two people, someone to provide an egg, and someone with sperm.

Didja see the pic? Maybe it's because he can't find the 2nd person.
You know, this seems like it's evolving all the fun parts of baby making out of the process.

Sorry, he just said without sex so that is how I interpreted it. Even in the article you need two people.

I don't get it. what's the improvement of getting children without sex? that's like working for free...

This might sound stupid, but is science sometime going to far?
What is the point of this study?

Sometimes science does go too far, but some of the best discoveries have been incidental to the actual purpose of the study.
plastic bags
teflon
neoprene
penicillin
potato chips (ok, not science - but they are tasty)
x-rays for medical purposes
insulin
antihistimines
the 'pill'
post it notes (the adhesive)
They even have a name for it. Serendipity. Everything that doesn't causee harm us but adds knowledge is good imo. Even seemingly useless stuff like this.

Yeah there have been plenty of ways to have children with out intercourse already. The simplest is artificial insemination. Then we have no methods such as in vitro fertilization and in theory cloning but don't think they have actually tried it. This is simply another "innovation" in reproduction or however you want to label it.

I see more application in terms of treating illness and genetic disabilities than I do for reproduction.

You are correct (for the most part) . Perhaps everyone should acquire a layman's concept of what a stem cell is before posting? Nah, that's asking too much.
