Where I taught in the south of Taiwan, instead of saying 'um' or 'er' when they dont know the word they will say "nigga"...You will routinely hear students saying something like "so I went to uh..nigga nigga jigga nigga...the store.
Similar to the "spread your legs story" I had to teach them the true meaning of the word and...not to use in in Western company

That's really a mouthful to say when you're thinking... um just comes naturally but that would just be confusing...

Hearing all of your stories about teaching abroad almost make me want to become a teacher myself. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sane enough to carry out the task any longer. That and my time in the Navy has made me quite unstable. Oh, wait...........

Similar to the way the Japanese go 'ano' for 'um' and 'er,' the Chinese use 'na ge (that)' and 'zhe ge (this)' when they can't think of a way to express their thoughts sensibly. Or at least those students did. I've never heard anybody do that.

In cantonese, the word "nay ga", means "your". And Chinese ppl always say that word really fast, so it'll sound like the word "nigga" to ppl that don't speak cantonese. Created a misunderstanding when my female korean friend heard me converse with another girl. But Taiwanese ppl speak mandarin, so I've no idea what that means since I don't speak it. :o

In mandarin "your" is pronounced "near gur (like "girl") which sounds like nigger or "ni/li (palatial) gur, ji gur" wihch means "that" and "this"
in cantonese "your" sounds like "knee ga"
but normally chinese people who can't speak their thoughts would probably say err, um (maybe that's just me living in asian community in australia)
Oh and also the chinese (and indian, actually now that i think of it, pretty much all asian) who are tryhards use nigger/niggaz liberally
Jigga probably refers a money jigger or most commonly refers to a truant.
"Stop jigging, go back to school you nigger"
or
"You jigga, don't go dissin knee ga ('yo) nigga at ji gur (this) PC World in the city.

Daniel And Spader pretty much summed it up for you, but IIRC the spoken language for taiwan was either mandarin or their native language which to the best of my understanding is a more refined form of hokkien (dialect) we use..
heck, i use it myself sometimes if i'm trying hard to remember and don't want to have an awkward silence :p

I dunno how it's like for China and other areas that speak Mandarin, but here in Taiwan, 那個 (na4 ge5) is often said as "ne guh".
