View Full Version : Why does every Japanese drama have to have somebody running?

Honestly?
Every single Japanese drama I've seen has felt the need to show one of the characters running as fast as they could in street clothes through some crowded street.
I guess it "can't be love" unless you have to run to stop some sort of horrible love drama disaster.

So when non-Japanese TV does it it's okay, but when a Japanese TV does it, it's "weird"? When non-Japanese TV does something it's cool, but when Japanese TV does it, it's "strrrrrange"?

Jesus Christ, why does everybody try to turn something into prejudice? I'm merely stating a trend that I've noticed in the over 10 J-Drama series that I've seen.
Grow the fuck up.
And for the record, of the American dramas I've watched (which aren't many), I have not seen the main characters having to run through crowded streets to avert "love disasters."

I'm more fond of the "race after him/her to Narita in a taxi, because your cell phone has no battery, only to show up moments after he/she has boarded the plane for America" syndrome.
Yes, They were always running everywhere in those days.

So they're different. You don't necessarily have to ask the rhetorical "why do they HAVE to do (action)", in this case running through the streets. I could watch an American soap opera and say "Why do they always HAVE to have creepy background music for the face close-ups?".
Come to think of it, why do they?

I nearly got fired for watching that.
But it was worth it.

The main characters don't have to run through crowded streets because there are no such thing as a crowded street in the Great American Suburb. They drive instead.

Oh, that's right, you must be in the middle of work, aren't you. I just got off a few hours ago and had dinner. Yakisoba yum.

Dude if you read the first post I NEVER compared Japanese dramas to anything. Which would mean that I was not implying that any type of drama was better than one or another.
You people make me sick. It's like your looking for an excuse to pull the prejudice card. Don't give me that crap. I've grown up as a miniority in predominately white neighborhoods.
The thing I couldn't stand was the scene where some girl stands in the middle of a pedestrian overpass and cries in the rain.

I'm wondering why all these Japanese drama questions aren't in the, uh, Japan section.
Every genre has its fingerprints -- these are just a few of the fingerprints of the j-drama. I mean, it's like asking "Why do mecha anime have giant robots that evolve to better giant robots?" or "Why do slapstick comedies always have some kind of crotch-induced pain on the part of a male character?". It just comes with the territory.
Good point Scott. Come to think of it, there just may be some tiny sliver of an element of choice in what we watch on TV, so it is kind of silly to complain.

hehe...this is something I typed up a couple weeks ago while being frustrated in one of those, "why the hell am I watching this shit?" phases.
Top ten reasons why I need to stop watching Asian dramas:
10 Even if a girl and guy absolutely hate each other they will get into a situation at least once where one will get sick and the other will realize how sweet the one looks while in a fever-induced haze
9 Hell hath no fury like a lover scorned...drama girls who don't get the guy are psychotic. This includes hiring thugs to kill the rival, hiding information from the guy that he should know and of course...8
8 There is no better way to get attention than by committing suicide because someone will always find the person before they die and everyone will hate the lover who rejected the girl rather than getting the girl psychiatric help
7 The more feminine the guy, the more ladies love him...in Japanese dramas anyways
6 If the plot is ridiculous in the first 5 minutes stop watching...it will only get worse...MUCH worse...friends offering you tickets to china for a vacation and then offering to take care of your house. During the vacation they sell the house, empty your bank account, take out a loan and credit cards in your name and then disappear while you get into a business marriage with a movie star so that he can avoid scandals with the media? And then the movie star ends up buying your old house? And thats just the first couple episodes?
5 If you don't have parents or an education and you try to get with a highclass man, his ex will turn his entire family and friends against you and make your life miserable
4 If you cry in the first five minutes, stop watching...I don't understand why but leave it to Japan to make a drama about a disease almost exactly the same as the one that my sister died from. Why anyone would want to watch a girl die from a degenerative disease is beyond me.
3 Nothing like a little jealousy to make an asshole realize that he "loves" the girl. I hate how people are used as possessions in dramas.
2. "Little kids solve owies with icecream...adults solve them with booze." Nuff said
1. The guy who is the biggest asshole at the beginning always gets the girl rather than the guy who is nice throughout. The girl would rather wait (preferably in the cold rain so that she can get sick and he can take care of her later) for the asshole to "turn" than just be with the sweet guy who actually gives a shit about her from the beginning.

Japan overrides entertainment, in my opinion. This is about something specifically Japanese.
