*GASP* I look through this thread and find that there is no thread devoted to metal? (Though assuming we all like Japan here, J-pop would be the big thing here, I still feel the need to state my love affair with my genre-religion)

It was stated in one of Az-sama's school editorials that metal was relatively unknown in Japan. (A darn shame if I ever saw one) But that's just a side point.

I find my favorite genre gets all judged and stereotyped a lot with black metal, and death metal. (Not so much my kind of thing) Metal in fact has a lot of subgenres.

My favorite are Symphonic metal (Nightwish, Haggard) Battle metal (Heimdall, Falkenbach) and folklore metal (Elvenking, Tuatha de Dannan)

Any takers?

\,,/ Rock on.

Ahaha. ^^ I like new recording technologies and how they give me eight million different overlying tracks to pick apart when I need to de-stress.

I'm a fan of alot of metal bands from all over the world, from Germany, to Japan, to Norway, and back to North America.

Lots of great stuff from Post '95, its not all Nu-metal and shit. Lots of Power and Progressive metal as well has Melodic Death and Black metal (some good, some bad).

I also like the classics like Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest, WASP, and so on.

YES! *Hands in air* There are a lot of good metal bands from around the world, rather than just Germany, Norway, and northern Europe. I've listened to Spanish metal from South America and even an African band. I like the way that the ethnicity of those regions got into the music.

And yes, ^_~ It was Nu-metal.

Yeah the older stuff I like. And it's not rally metal just Hard Rock in general.

- Iron Maiden
- Sabbath/Ozzy
- Deep Purple
- Hendrix
- Led Zeppelin

- Metallica. Of course! Well, old age Metallica (Kill 'em All to AJFA and arguably Black Album)
- ACDC
- And of course there are more

Some new stuff I like.
- Disturbed
- Lamb of God (It's ok)
- And like a few.

Among the classic metal, Twisted sister has to be some of my favorites. But I can't really name *everything* I like. (Too big a list) that and I pay more attention to the subgenre rather than band name sometimes.

Metal is very important to me. Though most people don’t seem to think so when they see me, as I certainly don’t fit the stereotypical “metal” image.

I like lots of different styles of metal, but I tend to gravitate more toward the doom/sludge side (for those unfamiliar, think really slow, really heavy; sometimes lots of Black Sabbath-type groove, sometimes none at all). Some of my biggest favorites here would be:

Corrupted
Burning Witch
sunn 0)))
Khanate
Earth
Eyehategod
Monarch
Church of Misery

Don’t listen to nearly as much death or black metal, but there are a few bands I like a lot. Some death metal favorites:

Carcass
Obituary
Cannibal Corpse (mostly Chris Barnes-era, though I can’t stand Six Feet Under)
Mortician

Some black metal favorites:

Burzum
Immortal
Urgehal

Grind:

Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Anal Cunt
Bathtub Shitter

And as far as the older hard rock/metal goes:

Black Sabbath
AC/DC
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Scorpions
Deep Purple

Again, way too much overall to list everything.

Yeah, Napalm Death helped start grindcore back in the mid-80s (though they weren't the first band). They're more of a death metal band now, though. None of the original members are even in the band anymore. They all went on to other projects that I like much more (guitarist Justin Broadrick formed Godflesh and more recently Jesu; bassist/vocalist Nik Bullen and drummer Mick Harris formed Scorn, which Bullen left after three albums).

I'm a big fan of Black Label Society, but I mostly listen to classic rock. Anything that has good guitar playing, but mostly U.S./English Rock/Heavy Metal. Mostly because it's easier for me to understand what the songs are about.

Dragonforce... Drrraaaagonnnnforce. And Kamelot... And Heimdall, and Hammerfall.

*Holds head* There are so many great bands from there. And Nightwish. *Drool*

Is it abnormal to be attracted to Nightwish's lead singer in an unholy way?

Okay, first post, here we go.

First of all, yeah, Miseria is from Finland. I saw them last summer on a festival and my attention was caught because the band was actually formed of three girls and two guys, and lead singer was male too... now you don't see that a lot in the scene. Two of the girls do most of the composition work too.

Metal is very important to me. I listen to most aspects of it at least a little. The biggest three would probably be 1) Doom 2) Industrial 3) Black but most of the stuff I listen to is more or less hard to categorise under genres so... fuck genres.

I certainly won't be listing everything I listen to. Most of it is scandinavian metal either from Finland, Sweden or Norway but there are also several from the UK and Germany and of course the US. There are also individual bands from some rarer countries like Austria, Estonia, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Poland. Well, you get the idea. There's good metal everywhere if you know how to look for it.

The all-time greatest metal band ever has to be Emperor (RIP) from Norway. An artistic and chaotic black metal band with no flaws at all. Others from the top would be Amorphis (Fin), Candlemass (Swe), Cult of Luna (Swe), Moonspell (Por), Opeth (Swe), Reverend Bizarre (Fin), Samael (Switzerland), Satyricon (Nor), Shape of Despair (Fin), Tristania (Nor) and Zyklon (Nor). That's a very short list and hardly includes anything.

And yeah, there are a lot of Finnish metal bands that sing in English. Actually, most of them do. Everyone knows Nightwish (the best popular metal band in Finland), Stratovarius and probably Sonata Arctica (unfortunately. they're crap to no end) but people should try out the less popular ones too, since they're overall much better. If you want to know which ones, ask for recommendations. I'm more than happy to give them (I write reviews to a Finnish webzine so I know what I'm talking about...)

Is it abnormal to be attracted to Nightwish's lead singer in an unholy way?

Well, if you discard the two facts that she's almost thirty and married...
And I could name several female singers from the scene who are waay hotter.
/edit: now that I think of it, I could also name a few males from the scene who are hotter. *coughs*

I've lost interest in Nightwish after their last 2 albums, they just didn't do anything for me at all. My wife loved Century Child, but she actually doesn't like their last one either (which is weird because she defended CC to the hilt when I said I didn't like it, and this one sounded pretty much the same to me)

What happened to Sonata Arctica? I haven't really listened to them in 3 years, I thought they were pretty good back then. Did they change styles? I have to know before my wife buys tickets to their next show this month, I don't want to head out there only to be disappointed.

about Sonata Arctica:
Well, if you listened to any other album than Ecliptica (the debut), then you ought to have quite a good idea of what they sound like these days. At least this is what I think. For some people it's ultimate bestness (they have quite a lot of fans everywhere, especially Japan) but then again there are people (like me) who are unable to listen to a single song without suffering thousand years of pain. Their newest album got pretty good reviews in media, so if you're into that kind of stuff, might be you'll still like it.

And about Nightwish... yeah, Oceanborn is their best by far. I don't really listen to other albums save for individual songs. If you want really good opera/gothic metal, try Tristania (Nor) and their album Beyond the Veil. That is, if growling vocals are not a turn-off (most of their male vocals are growls but they Vibeke Stene on female vocals. She's a goddess. And they use choirs too, truly majestic.)

Good to see some quality metal taste here. I have to say I'm more into traditional ,thrash, black, death & what I call just "heavy" metal (Nevermore, Blaze, Machine Men), but I listen to just about everything, except for that metalcore stuff. Not really my swing. I would list the bands I like, but I won't punish my keyboard by typing them out.

I'm mainly a fan of classic rock (mostly hard rock), but I'm starting to get into metal.

I'm a big fan of many of the early metal/roots of metal artists like Sabbath, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Zeppelin, and so on. But I'm starting to enjoy lots of metal bands. Currently I'm listening to lots of Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, and if I feel the need for something heavier, Pantera. I've got tons of stuff to listen to in the genre (I'm probably going to pick up an early Metallica album or something by Judas Priest soon).

I should go through but I'm afraid to make a list. (Chances are I'll miss something) o.O What subgenre of metal I like really depends on how I'm feeling, the more angry I am the louder and heavier the drums and guitar get. Prefferably with more different sounds so I can sit and pick apart every individual sound in there until I calm down.

Then I take my headphones off and listen to that nice ringing sound that follows me everywhere. XD

Yeah! I like all subgenres, except probably your symphonic/opera genre (Nightwish etc). I love double-kicking on teh bass drum and heavy guitar riffing.

Sometimes I don't feel like metal at all, so I listen to hip-hop (Aussie hip-hop owns all ;)) or punk rock, ala Green Day or Millencolin.

Eh, it's been around for a while, just not as common as others.

Basically the bands just smoke copious amounts of weed and/or sing songs about them. Bongzilla only writes songs about weed. Sleep wrote a 52-minute song called "Jerusalem" about a caravan of stoners traveling to the Holy Land in ancient times. There's maybe 3 riffs in the whole song; you either love it or hate it. I think it's great.

And I don't even smoke, so people seem to be really surprised that I like a lot of this stuff.

I am a rocker at heart. I am eclectic, but there is nothing quite luck the rush you get from listening to some true metal. I won't go on listing my favorites, but I gotta ask... I've heard of them, but what exactly are Symphonic, Battle, and Folklore metal like? I may have already heard some and I don't know it yet.

Anubis Nine

As far as I know Fujin, (I may be wrong) Battle metal is usually more well, metal like usually. Kinda like power metal but kind of uplifting. It has lots of drums and guitar and such. It's pretty disdinctive.

Folklore metal is usually like... celtic metal. With fiddles and pretty singing and such, but with the metal aspect too. Which is why I like it so.

Symphonic metal usually has violins and other 'non-metal' instruments and more pretty singing. And the metal aspect.

I like these because I like the heavy-ness of metal but not usually how harsh it gets, I maintain a bit of a tranquility I guess. (It's gone down since I started listening to metal so who knows, I may be into death and grunge metal by this time next year. XD)

Battle metal is actual best discribed as bands like Bal Sagoth, actually I believe they are the originators of the style. They are Black Metal-ish, With the vocals (Though Byron interchanges it with a deep Narrative voice through each song), but they are also symphonic too (but with keyboards instead of guest musicians with the usual intruments. its hard to explain, you would have to hear them.

Their songs are usually about ancient battles, Malevolent creatures from before the beginning of time, Dark Magiks that lead to the destruction of entire cities, and so forth. If you love the work of Robert Erwin Howard, their music is alot like his stories, Full of dark fantasy. Great stuff, they are definately one of my favorite bands.

I love Metal like that. I know they're not quite what you're describing, but Iron Maiden does the story-telling bit a lot. They even made this one long song about the Anicent Mariner called "Rime of the Ancient Mariner".

I think I might be real partial to symphonic metal as classical has conditioned me to appreciate variances in tone and different parts of a song creating a whole.

Daishikaze
09-07-2005, 11:19 PM
The thing I love about Bal Sagoth is you have to read the lyrics booklet along with the song because it helps tell the story. There are parts of the lyrics that are specifically for the listener to read and are not actually sung in the song. its great because IMO it kinda pulls you into the story more, and makes you more interested in what happens if the story is left open in the end (they always get back to that story eventually, you just have to wait awhile sometimes).

they got a new album coming out later this year, I can't wait.
