I'm not normally a political person, but this caught my eye. Big internet companies like Verizon are trying to squash a law called "Net Neutrality" that prevents them from blocking their users from accessing other ISP zones and non-approved websites (basically making each one their own little China).
If they gain this ability, it will stomp out small ISPs like Google and PeoplePC in favor of the big ones, and set up large scale website censorship. A friend of mine recommended emailing Maddox about it, which sounds like a good idea to me. Here's his email: maddox@xmission.com

This is a new event. The House just struck down a law trying to further protect Net Neutrality.

Comparatively, I'd think so.

Compared to Verizon and Comcast, it's tiny. That's why it, and Yahoo, and lobbying against Verizon for Net Neutrality to stay.

Google is an ISP? I thought they were a search engine and advertising agency...
Don't email Maddox, it'll just piss him off. You think he doesn't already know about it?

Google set up, or was in the process of setting up a city wide free WAN somewhere on the west coast, so yes they are an ISP. They have pretty big plans if you look into them further. They're looking to offer cell phone service and a bunch of other things as well.

And pass up a chance for him to send me a reply making fun of me, or, even better, publicly on his site? Never! :hat: This seems like an issue that'd get his attention, he is an internet user. This affects anyone online.

What the hell good would emailing Maddox do? He's just another blogger that writes like an angry 14 year old.

And lots of people read his website. If he cares enough to write about it, lots of people will find out.

As opposed to the fact articles have already made major online new sources like Fark, Digg, /., BoingBoing, etc and been viewed by thousands of people. Also the Wall Street Journal has carried an article on it, it has made the front page of CNN.com, etc. Maddox's reach is nothing compared to that, all your doing is filling up his inbox and at best you'll get an angry rant out of him.
As for Google being an ISP my major point was the concept that Google is small. Personally I don't call multbillion dollar companies small.
For a side note Microsoft is for net neutrality and knowing how Microsoft works it will likely crush any kind of telecom company that stands in its way. Microsoft's evil legal department will likely benefit all of America by aiding us in doing so. The entire e-commerce industry and computer industry (those that provide webserving support at least) want to make sure bandwidth stays unlimited and open across the country and they have enough money and political clout to get what they want.

Google is a relatively small ISP. It is a large company that focuses (for the present) on other things. I like to give our lawmakers enough credit to shoot down bills that are this monopolistic and stupid.

You know, every gamer in the country would cancel their ISP because no one could run game servers any more. I'm sure that would be great for business.
