It's only flaw is that it is in the wrong forum, i'll move it for you.
I guess it isn't really about Japan, is it. Still, it's nice to know that Az's regular stuff is just as funny.

I have the opposite problem. All my guy friends like the horrible girly flicks and I have to drag them to the pointlessly violent films like Hostel and Final Destination. I dragged my girlfriend to see Dead Alive and she threatened to kill me afterwards...

You gotta be kidding. lol. I dragged my guyfriend to see it when he thought he'd hate it, but we both LOVED it. To this day, it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
I didn't get what was so bad about Red Dragon, though. I really liked that movie. I remember seeing it when I was 16 or 17 in theaters. I was so freaked out. I jumped up in fright from my chair and spilled soda all over my friend's pink sweater :p. I'd think guys would enjoy taking girls to see scary movies because they could take advantage of her getting scared during scenes.
I really laughed at the "Queen of the Damned" part. Because I have a couple girlfriends who used to OBSESS over Anne Rice. They loved her mainly for writing about really hot vampires. I would feel sorry for any guy dragged to any movie adapted from Anne Rice's books.

Anne Rice is only hot if you enjoy boy on boy action. But if I really wanted that, I could get it a lot easier with Poppy Z Brite and at least get some junk food and drugs on the side.
The problem with Hannibal is that it's just not a scary movie. It's not even psychologically scary. It's just about a guy who eats people, based very, very loosely on fact. Texas Chainsaw was a lot better, and it was based on the same guy. But this doesn't really have anything to do with Japan...
Er...okay, here's a tie in. Along the lines of having to drag guys to movies, when I was in Japan, I dragged my boyfriend to see Batman as soon as it was released in theaters. Near the end when the whole city is falling apart and is ruins, I nudged him and whispered, "That's what Los Angeles is like!" :innocent:

I know im gonna get flamed for this, but I wasn't that satisfied with this one.
I dunno, maybe I was expecting an actual misadventure like his teacher editorials, but that's probably my fault for reading them a lot more often than his other work (like the worst porn ever, The source of my problems [HILARIOUS], etc).
I think Az also kinda suffered this problem too though, maybe in the end it's both Az and the readers use to the Misadventure type editorials, but I'm guessing the more he does this the better it'll get.
6 outta 10, but no reason at all to really complain, and obviously still has entertainment value.

Good stuff, but I'm sort of with Decade. The editorials about "life" just arn't that entertaining to me. I can go anywhere on the web to find comical editorials about the male/female relationship. There's only ONE place I can hear about a 60 pound asian kid attempting to sodomize a 6'3" black man.
As for A Snake of June, I've seen that movie and it was horrible. The blue tint he speaks of isn't just the color being off due to poor quality equipment. The entire thing looks like they're filming through a tank of blue gatorade.

Guys don't want to play games. Have you seen the original movie version of "Red Dragon" AKA Manhunter? Friend of mine named Michel Rubini did the score...
I - for one - can't take scary films.

I've always been a big fan of Az's normal editorials. I always look forward to them.
This one, however, was just trying too hard to be funny. What I've always liked about the normal articles was how insightful they were, as well as amusing. This one just didn't have any real insight. It seemed like Az wanted to complain about the subject, but just didn't feel strongly enough about it to write a captivating article.
He's also beginning to become more mean-spirited with each article. This one, in particular, is a good example. Even his humor came off as being ruder than normal. (most of the humor was about the same subject, which began to sound a bit... mean after a while)
The worst part of all was that we didn't get to know him any better from this editorial. Most of the time, everything he writes, from the things he chooses to his somewhat geeky sense of humor, we get to know a little more about the person behind the keyboard with each update. This was just a generic rant.
I don't read the forums very often, but has something been bothering him? He just didn't seem to be in the right frame of mind to write a great article.
(I apologise to everyone who disagrees with me. I'm not the type of person who would complain unless I sincerly felt that there was something wrong with "The Movie Date". I mean no disrespect to the author of it, or anyone else. I'm sorry if this sounded rude)

There was an early 90's dad who bore a (no longer) Japanese homestay student?

2 degrees from Kumi via my talento pal; I do know Ron Howard and want nothing to do with Dan Brown; Sadly, while my late great-uncle Arthur knew Kissinger - I don't know anyone in the new Kremlin. Remember my mom works for a powerful Washington lobby - so I know too many American politicians.

Oh Az, Az, Az...
You need to learn that there is one type of movie that all women like enough and is also acceptable - plus a good date-closer: The Comedy. I'm not talking about some travesty like "Scary Movie XVII", but the more classic ones that everyone can enjoy.
Take for example - Pink Panther? Screw that - rent the old one. 99% chance that nobody has seen it except for maybe you, and it's side-splittingly good. And light as well - zero angst or trauma.
Mel Brooks - also good. The goal here is to get the woman into a happy upbeat mood at the end and not have to rot your brain out. Classic comedy is good for this, though classic Animation is as well. We're talking about non-Disney stuff like the new movie "Over the Hedge" - it's a fantastic date movie. It's funny and even a type-A muscle-builder could stomach it. Definately more than some dreck like "Saving all of my ex-boyfriends and writing a novel about my experiences doing so II" that they want to drag you to watch.
Her:"I want to see this really emotional movie with miles of dialogue and scenery"
You:"Could we see this one instead? I had a hard day at work and want to laugh at something(other than my pitiful pay)."
The sales pitch only works about half the time, but once you get them laughing, your chances of getting some go up dramatically.

Hear hear! I agree 100%.
The woman bashing look bores me. Az, you seem far too intelligent to be so bitter about a romance or two gone sour.
My whole gripe with this entry is the whole "payment" thing. The world doesn't owe you, me or anyone else shit. You decided to see those flicks for whatever reasons. They turn out to be unenjoyable for you and whatever woman that happened to be there at the time is then obligated to you sexually.
Not a good look.
I can understand you opting against wearing your heart on your sleeve but the whole "being-an-asshole-is-cool" shit is corny.

...Um...the "payment" thing was a joke.
Those movies were horrible, sure, but I don't actually hold any of the women who coerced me into watching them responsible.

I totally get that it was intended to be funny. It just isn't. Stand alone at another time and place it might have been. Given the progression of your writing in recent memory; It's just.....alarming.

I thought it was funny. If you're going around taking everything he says in his editorial as 100% gospel truth, you're in trouble. It's a classic writing trick - take a funny thought and extend it for a whole piece. I think it works very well.
But then I'm male. I can see it might be offensive if you're a soft flesh girly wuss and all.

I agree, I thought it was funny too. The payment thing didn't strike me as Az actually expecting sexual favors in exchange for movies. It was a joke. Although if Az has ever actually recieved any of those payment methods, that would be awesome.

I thought it was funny, especially the "payment" part. Read some of Az's editorials about relationships. While you are at it, read up on ladder theory - the author there also has a simmilar outlook. :)
Yeah - the Gods are cruel. There is no reward. Just suffering through the date. But, darn it, there should be SOME compensation for the pain you have to go through. In a perfect world, there would be. (looks outside at the urban blight that is Los Angeles)

Worst date movie ever.
Took a lady friend of mine (Kim) to see a Japanese Indy film myself long ago in college, it was about 2 gay guys and a girl who hanged around em who had a crush on em or sumthing. Throw in lots and lots of male on male action with almost no nude girl action and tons of drama. By the end of the flick I was cringing in my chair desperately looking for the exit.
The payout should have been 36 hours of sexual gratification, nonstop. I on the otherhand got jack diddly.
