View Full Version : I'm looking for some writers who have been/are in Japan

As some of you may know, I run Japan Is Doomed (http://www.japanisdoomed.com), a very new site dedicated to basically making Japan more confusing for readers than it already is. I'm looking for a couple of people who know how to write who would be interested in having their work seen by a growing readerbase ect.
Before You Complain: Just because we write content on the same subject does not mean we are competing with Az/OP9. Think of us as a little shrub sheltering under the baking hot internet sun under OP9's plentiful leaves. Yeah.
Anyway, if you're interested there are just so many ways you can let me know;
Read this first, then... (http://www.japanisdoomed.com/?page_id=33)
PM me on the JiD forum
or PM me on OP9
or Email me (mike@japanisdoomed.com)
or I suppose you could use smoke signals.
If you read this (http://www.japanisdoomed.com/?page_id=33) it should answer any questions, but if anything's not clear I'll be happy to answer questions.
Thanks :)

Fixing the links in your post would be a start. And I don't know how Az will feel about this as while it may not directly compete with GS.net, it sure as Hell does compete with it indirectly. People can only read so much a day. Especially about Japan.

Links fixed - I'm not used to VBulletin code :(
Of course, it's absoloutly within Az's rights to remove this but I doubt he will. We shall see.

It has one article, if someone wanted people to read his/her articles, creating their own blog would give them probably just as many readers. With the exception that then they would have total control of their material o_O

Yeah, but there are many people who probably don't have the endurance to keep a blog running (I know I sure as Hell didn't), but would still like to write something now and again, to see if an audience develops on a site that has more regular updates (even if they are other people's).

I like the layout. Very simple, stylish.
However, as a card carrying Japanophile, I'd never write for a website called japanisdoomed.
I'm also a bit tired of hyperbole.
ahem.
4. Dire Television
Most Japanese TV consists of tacky game shows and ridiculous quizzes that really serve to humiliate the contestant rather than test them in some way. Think Takeshi's Castle played backwards on two speed, with the TV upside down whilst being constantly beaten over the head. The question most Japanese TV shows seems to be answering is "What new ways can we induce vomiting?".
Ok, so how many Japanese TV shows have you actually seen? :frypan:

I'm not getting into a debate about Japanese TV here. I saw a few TV shows and after I woke up again I swore I'd never watch another ;)
I can understand people's comments. Yes, it's a new site and thus hasn't got any mileage but because I'm not in Japan yet I can't really write much content on it. I just need a few believers :)

Since this thread is going to go nowhere I'm going to hijack it now. :cop:
I seem to be developing a bit of yellow feaver :fever: and I was wondering what the best way is to deal with it. For example the following two thoughts have crossed my head more than once.
"Her is butt is really small, but its so damn cute and nice."
"It's not a huge rack, but its good enough!"
Also, the other day I actually got bored of American porn and switched to some Japanese porn ... and I liked it. :eyepop:
I feel like any day now I'm going to walk through Shibuya and think tan skin and gaudy make-up is the hottest thing ever.
Maybe watching a few episodes of Las Vegas will clear this up.

Jesus Christ man, if you're going to randomly derail threads at least do it in threads nobody cares about. I'm actually quite interested in people's views on my site so go shit up someone else's thread.
Moving on, had a few replies, but keep them coming. I'm hoping to get 5-6 contributers to start with, but I won't ever turn anyone down because we have too many writers.

Stuff is in the planning stage - but I may have a cunning plan in regards to this site (http://www.usbizdirect.com/index.php) for the Japanophiles here along with Az.

Does that exist? :eyepop: That would make riding the train far more entertaining.

I'm just curious -- why are you in such a rush to find writers for and publicize your site right now, right this instant? Why not wait until you get to Japan, have actually seen what it's like, and have some stories of your own? It seems that your site would be much more well-rounded that way, and you would be better-equipped to see the truth/hyperbole in other peoples' articles.
In addition to that, you'll also be able to find out what your living conditions are like in Japan -- especially after adjusting to the time zone difference. For all you know, you may not have the time or the wherewithal to actually continue with the site, which means that any writers you sign up now would then be abandoned, so to speak.
It's not like you're going to lose a fanbase or anything, since you haven't started gaining it yet. If you try to gain one now, with mininal real content, odds are that they'll just go and then forget about your site when there's not much there. Why not just publicize it when you HAVE things to show?
In short... why not just wait a bit, until you can actually do things?
Edit: Additionally, and I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this, but your domain/site name are pretty pessimistic. Sure, it's catchy, but it's horribly pessimistic -- at least to me. This seems to indicate that the articles you'll put on your site and the articles you're looking for are all going to be... uh, pessimistic. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't really want to go to a site about stupid/sad/annoying things in Japan, because it's called the news.

I don't see it as an entirely 'Japan is fucked because it's Japan' type title, so much as 'Japan is fucked because I'm coming' or something of the sort. I certainly don't find 'Gaijin Smash' any more positive, and possibly even more negative.

That was my point ...

My view is that it needs more content. That will probably come easily once you get here. Why don't you just wait until then?
Also you first article is more like a forum post. If you plan to have lots of articles like that you might want some interactive portion of the site like comments or a forum.
BTW, all of your fears are misguided. There's lots of stuff that really does suck here, but none of those points are it.

I think the site name has a certain "what the fuck?" air about it - hopefully one people will follow to satiate their confusion :)

Because JID is not a blog. It's not somewhere where I can simply tell stories. It's not the same as Outpost9. On JID I want to showcase lots of writers, and build up a collection of differing stories.

I'm not saying that it's a blog... I'm just saying, like any website, you don't want to attract visitors when you DON'T have content, and right now, you personally cannot create content since you're not in Japan.

Ah, but if I was looking for readers I'd have made a thread called "Come read my website!" This is me requesting people who are willing to help fill the site with content...so you should be happy soon :)

:sigh: ok ok, japanese tv isnt exactly great. i hate the repetativeness(sp?) of most of it. but what i hate more is something like this. not trying to bash you (but clearly doing so), but it just seems like you read somewhere that japanese tv was the worst torture in the world, watched a few hours of random tv, and then jumped on the band wagon.
For the most part, Japanese tv does suck. there are so many things i hate about it. but there are good tv shows out there. heres an example that rika used for something else, but i think it fits here:
Something almost exactly the same happened at school. Keep in mind, this happened in FIRST GRADE. In one subject called Doutoku, we watch TV drama in class and discuss its themes. After watching that drama, the teacher accidentally pressed a wrong button and some show for toddlers came up (equivalent to Tallytubbies). Suddenly, everyone in the class put their hands in their ears and put their face on the desk, screaming "turn it off! turn it off! ewwww!!" It was almost like everyone was trying to scream louder than everyone else, so no one would accuse them of watching it.
Now, comparing this to another episode during middle school. In middle school, during homeroom, our broadcasting class airs a live show, reporting on school news. One day, after that was over, our teacher accidentally pressed the wrong button and Barney came up. Yet, in contrast to first grade, some people continued watching it, saying things like "wow, I haven't seen barney for so long!"
My theory is that, people in first grade reacted that way because they were actually WATCHING it recently, but doesn't want their classmates to know that, so they try to cover it up by acting overdramatically. Meanwhile, in middle school, nobody has been watching Barney (hopefully) for some years, so people can honestly say they missed being four and watching it. In other words, the ones who cry out the "noooo" loudest are actually being hypocrits
Therefore... all of you that are saying "I couldn't watch past the first 30seconds", maybe you're actually an otaku yourself?
What im trying to say is, im gettin the vibe that since you, as you said, aren't in japan yet, your tryin to pick up on being there, etc. too much, so you just jump on the bandwagon with what you heard.
As i said again, im not trying to burn ya....but...maybe im not trying hard enough...?
The thing is, today i watched a youtube video that showed a japanese girl doing abacus for add numbers in the billions. she was really good at using it. so anyways, in the comments section, some girl says Not sure if I commented yet, but I'd like to say this is why Americans are stupid. They are so lazy, they don't do anything to use their minds at all. I admire the Japanese, I truely wish I was Japanese, it's the life. She is impressive though, however that long to find one answer, or did I miss something?
ME: (-_- )...................
Yes...you see one girl, ONE girl do abacus, and that makes americans stupid. cause of course, because ONE girl does abacus on a youtube video, every japanese person knows, and uses an abacus on a daily basis. And all about "I truly wish i was Japanese, it's the life." ................:duh: yeah shut the hell up. you've probably never been to japan so your just talking out of what you read, saw on tv, etc. maybe she expects to come to Japan and see Tom Cruise walking around as the last samurai?...idiot...
ARGH, sorry....just a bit pissed..maybe this should go in the japan rant thread?:knockout:
The funny part is, i grill this guy on him talking junk about japanese tv sucking, and ironically, im about to post on a tv show that i think is retarded. odd...:bang:

Kilreli... from what I can tell, you... uh, have no respect for this guy's topic. The first part, sure, that's about the topic, I suppose. The second part -- I don't even know what you're doing. You're responding to something from Rika saying that she seems like she isn't in Japan and is trying to pick up on stuff, but she WAS in Japan... but she never came up in the topic. Then you went off on some random rant about youtube.
Am I the only one confused, or am I completely missing something here?

yeah sorry...after going back downstairs for a while, i decided i was a dickhead...i was gonna come up and apologize...but...i get side tracked quick. i jsut started writing a reply, but backspaced it all. ill just make a long story short. someone made an ignorant assumption about the differences between japan and america today and it for some reason it set me off. before i "cooled down" fully i read the thing about japanese tv. the previous statement was still in my mind, so i somehow linked the two, and decided to vent again.
so yeah...sorry for being a douche bag.
on a side note: none of it was against rika at all. i was using a quote from her with i used as an example for why i thought he "jumped on the bandwagon" in the whole japanese tv sucks thing. so yeah, i had nothing on rika. though as i said, im sorry for being an idiot and dont feel that same now, ill try to explain to clarify. :knockout:
rika was talking about how when the kids we're just in the pase of watching the current show recently, so they could still be linked to it. so for that reason, they would scream loud, cover their ears, etc. to try to convince others that they didnt watch it. Well, my brain picked up that i could also be used the other way right? instead of kids just jumping on the bandwagon and screaming so they wouldnt be linked with something, how bout someone jumping on the bandwagon so they would be accusedc of something. does that work?
For example, have you ever known a kid when you were younger (not sure about your age now, so just think back to highschool times), who would constantly brag about all the drugs he has done, or the chicks he has banged, when in reality he either doesnt know the first thing about drugs, or he's a virgin, but he talks about it to be accepted by the others? thats what i was getting at.
and the you tube thing was just an explanation as to why i was pissed. this is also. anyways, ill say it again. sorry nudger for bein a dick, i was just easiy set off at that moment. :bang:

Ok, so this is your site, so you're free to put up whatever you want.
You're free to call it whatever you want.
However, with a name like japanisdoomed, it sounds like you've already made up your mind that the place sucks, and you're going to tell us why. Even if that's not your intent, that's what it comes off as. (No, gaijinsmash isn't much better, but that's another story)
Az does this as well, but I personally prefer writing that is less sensationalist. It looks like you're just trying to point out everything "those wacky Japanese" do, and I think more insightful comments than "Think Takeshi's Castle played backwards on two speed, with the TV upside down whilst being constantly beaten over the head. " would be a more enjoyable read. That sentence is just trying way too hard to be funny.
As it is, it looks like you're just mimicking Az's writing style.
But again, your site, your rules. I'm sure there are more people that enjoy reading about "wacky Japan" than "normal Japan" (notes OP9 popularity), so more power to you, I guess..:bang:

I used to write for Nozomi Online but haven't had much time lately. I'd say put what you want on your website. It may not cater to those more knowledgeable in all things Japanese, but who cares. If it's entertaining, people will come to check it out.

Sounds like sound advice. At the end of the day if we only ever have 5 writers who never break more than 20 readers a day, but have a damn good time doing it I'm more than happy.
