View Full Version : Small build.
Over the years I have always had a "small build". Meaning that I am not that tall (I had a 6 inch growth spurt 2 years ago making me 5 foot 6ish, and that saved me from being considered a midget 0_0), and I am also very skinny.
Now as the years have passed I constantly hear the same insults from other guys, as well as some girls. I have actually been accused of being either anorexicc or bulimic (I assure you I am not either of these), I have been called a midget, weak, and so on and so forth. Even When I started working out, people have used my size as an excuse for me being able to do what I can do. A few months ago I was doing a series of pull-ups, when I hear a person (In a fairly loud voice ) say "he can only do that because he is small.
Now I in no way hate myself, infact I am pretty happy with my body, because I am fit, I can do whatever I set out to do, but I wonder, why do people feel the need to hate people with small builds? Do girls feel the same way, but are just nice about it, and do not say it to my face?
Any and all comments are welcome.

Bah each body type has its advantages if you take care of yourself and your healthy who gives a #@$# what other people say.
Well I honestly don't, I just have been wondering for a while.

I can tell you wanted to talk about this man...
I've always had problems with people mocking my size. I've been called skinny and scrawny and shit like that. It did hurt... Then I started working out and somehow (my friends say a lot of stuff x.x) people found out about my martial arts experience. The rude comments suddenly began to come much less. Got flirted on as well.
It's a primal thing to mock those with smaller builds. Those with larger builds have a natural advantage over smaller people. Most of the time they just try to intimidate and mock people like us to gain some popularity points... And don't worry about them saying your size allows you to do more pull-ups. It's a proportional thing.
Some girls do prefer larger guys, but I've met my fair share of girls that were just fine with the way I was. Hell some of them were taller and, overall, bigger than I am. It's a bit weird to have to look up at a girl who is flirting with you, so... :( Weird. But there are plenty of girls at our height and even smaller that have no problem with the height thing. Don't worry too much about it man.
Just have confidence in yourself and stay loyal to your training.

Well to the first sentence, it only really came up as a thought after the convoes, but it has been bothering me for a while.
To the last one, I agree with you, I mean I have not tried to change myself to fit these people one bit, because like I said before I am happy with my appearence.
And thanks.

No problem. I've been there just like you.
Here's something I've always wanted to discuss... How do smaller men feel about dating taller women?
I'm still trying to sort out my feelings on this one... I met this really, really hot chick that eyed me up and down. Wasn't too shy about it. But she was taller than me. I had to look up a little. That made things a little... odd.
Wow, maybe it's that I went to a good school, and people are generally nice around where I live (with exceptions) but I've never heard of anyone getting insulted like that. In fact, very very few people were ever insulted for anything wrong with them, physically.
My goodness, where the hell are you two going to school?
Fujn- I honestly would not mind dating a person who is taller than me, if I find a person attractive something like a little height wouldnt bother me.
It might be a bit awkward tho if the person was like a foot taller than me.
Joe- Public schools.
I went to a public school

I live in Texas. Not like this situation is such an odd occurance you know... It happens everywhere. But most of this stuff happened in junior high, where most of the students were pretty damn stupid. In high school is happened sometimes, but not very often. I was such a nice, quiet guy that no one every wanted to have beef with me. I intimidated people with my silence, but people knew I was cool.
I dunno then.
There are some people that its fun to joke around with about weight.
I have actually had threats of getting eaten(literally) Lol
And in return I joke about how for instance how his weight affects his running or somewhat( Earlier this summer I ran with a fairly big kid, who was on the football team, so that he would improve a bit.)
Ah. Yes, middle school sucks everywhere. I thought you guys were talking about high school. Still, in my highschool, no one ever made fun of someone else for something physical. It just wasn't cool. Now, making fun of someone for behaving like an idiot, that was something else.
Well actually one of the incidents I mentioned happened specifically in high-school.
See In junior high is was more for my hight( I was about 4-11 __ 5). Then over the summer I grew 6 inches, and in highschool the short comments stopped(except when Im joking around with friends), but the skinny ones continue at the same rate give or take.

People with small builds can be extremely vicious fighters if they work on it. I have friends with small builds, and to be honest, it's always harder to take them down than it is to take down my medium and large built friends. Well, the ones that fight anyways. I suggest just learning a martial art and putting people in their place. :D

This is true. I've never been in a fight, and I don't plan to be if I can avoid it. I'm about 5'5" (5'6" on a good day) and apparently slightly underweight for my size. I hold a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I haven't practiced in years, but many of the things I learned became second nature, since I learned them at a fairly young age. I could hold my own against many people, but I'd rather avoid it because I honestly think I could end up killing them without meaning to. It's instinct: neutralize the enemy while avoiding damage to yourself. I would definitely recommend martial arts or self-defense classes, even some basic ones. You may not stick with the training for the rest of your life, but even a little bit of time can make a big difference.

5'7", in Capoeira now; I weigh in at 125. When I was 14 I was about 5', and weighed a little more than 100. Small builds = ectomorph, which then turn to ecto-mesomorphs, or skinny people who gain muscle quickly, but only if consistent excersize is placed.
I've posted this two times, so far.
Body Type. (http://www.weightlossforall.com/body-types-weight-loss.htm)
Do not, under any circumstances, listen to stupid kids on build.
If you feel good, and can run a mile without passing out, I think you're in good hands. However, if you ever feel the need to get a little bulk, do easy reps of weight-training, 2-3x a day. Personally I do all of my stuff at home, and don't even use weights; this is because I like being light as a feather. The second I throw a right hook is the same split that I toss a knee-cap kick, then pivot to a left upper-cut followed by a heel-hook to the temple. If you want me to go fanatical, Bruce Lee is a prime example of weight/speed.
In highschool I didn't have any enemies becuase I was totally stereotyped with that whole "omg he does MA" stuff. Just be more confident and you should get much trouble.
He may even have praised this site he been alive. (http://www.trainforstrength.com/workouts.shtml)
People still say "wow" when they hear that I weigh in at 125. Most of my buddies are at least 20 pounds heavier; some even more. I think you should feel comfortable with your weight since it will balloon a bit at 25-ish.
In the end, don't diet (it kills your metabolism), gradually eat better, with often, albiet lower-portion meals. If you're unsure, pick up a book by Deepak Chopra; his stuff is rather awesome, and is sold in every bookstore I can think of. Even the library.
One question, chief; which ethnicity are you?

Akitaka, You really have done your homework. I have been looking into these types for some years now. I'm an endo-mesomorph. Acutally I am glad in a very evil way to hear the skinny people get picked on too. I am overweight and have been for most of my life. I hate it to no extent and would sometimes kill to be too skinny then overweight. Nothing can take back the pain of childhood teasing(just think bitches, pools and my man-boobs).
I am one of those people that would have to limit everything I eat and excersie like an olymipian to loose a little. Such is the way things work. I do take a great interest in impressing people with my abilites despite my size. Things like beating MAX 300 heavy and martial arts.

My mum's a therapist; I read the books like Drew Carey on a club-sammich.
Endomorphic types don't have to hurt like ecto-morphes in excersize, however. The excersize suggested is aerobic, and lightly, for maybe 30 minutes a day. This means walking, light jogging, and if you wish, dancing :)
In fact, I park my car at the far end of the lot near the street, so that I have to walk a 1/4 mile each time (1/2mi round trip), since my JPN class is way across the campus. Saves gas, builds the legs in an easy fashion, etc.
But overall, diet is the key factor. Kill snacking, and kill soda, above all.
When it comes to eating, do not kill intake so suddenly; even fasting fanatic Arnold Ehret (a German dude who supposedly glorified the wonders of fasting to the western world) says this.
Find a good book, and make sure it's reasonable within your will-power; if it's too tough, like an exercize program, it could deter you from good habits that you may already have, and damage you.
A good start would be titles under Ayurveda, Macrobiotics, and for a more broad spectrum, Dr. Andrew Weil.
....but keep in mind that even with the stuff I've found out about so far, that I'm not a total expert; although I do think that I top a lot of allopathic doctors who's focus is mainly selling some damn perscriptions.
If you're most unsure, and would like a professional, I think that most trainers at gyms can offer good advice.

People pick on each other to make themselves feel superior. They have the problem, not you.
Yes, height and reasonable weight do provide serious advantages throughout life. Taller people are respected more, get better jobs and earn more money. That’s just the way it is. They have an advantage that you’ll have to overcome.
Being thin is, however, an advantage. Having a high metabolism is a blessing. You can eat without getting fat. Thin people live longer and generally healthier lives. Fat people have trouble getting jobs and promotions and respect in general. Heck, even clerks in stores avoid waiting on them and treat them with less respect.
I’m only 5’8” tall. Luckily, I live in a part of the country where that’s the average height. I have two sons. One is 6’3” tall and the other my height 5’8”. My older son was always the tallest kid in his class until perhaps his sophomore year in High School. My younger son was always the shortest kid in his class, again until his sophomore year in High School. When my younger son was 11 and in Middle School he could walk upright in my van.
School is rough because there’s always some idiot that has to prove their own worth by putting someone else down. Both of my sons are very accomplished martial artists having gone to a rough MA school since they were 6 years old. They know it hurts to be hit and to hit. They’ve had lots of bruises from fighting both with and without weapons in their MA school. Put bluntly, they could kick some serious ass.
When in Middle School some kids started to bother my older son, which was a serious error in judgment because he was a least a head taller than any of them. Of course they thought numbers would help and he would be too afraid to react. One took his wallet from his back pocket and threw it to another. The object was for my son to follow the wallet. He didn’t play their game. He went for the person that had originally grabbed the wallet and put him in an excruciating wrist lock and calmly said, “Give back my wallet.” The kid started screaming “Give him his wallet. Give him his wallet.” His friend quickly ran to my son with the wallet in his outstretched hand. No teachers witnessed the altercation. The word went around and people left my son alone.
But, my older son was tall. He could easily inflict pain. He could disguise his actions to avoid the teachers detection. He could limit what he did. My younger son didn’t have that advantage. He was short, really short. Like you, he could (and still can) do pushups and pull-ups until they’re boring. When he was confronted in school he walked away from it because he knew that he would have to come down hard on his opponent. Certainly, he would have won but the other kid would have had a trip to the hospital. So my son opted to walk away. One time a kid slammed my sons hand in his locker seriously cutting the hand. My son just walked calmly to the school nurse. The school administration had a fit and the kid that had slammed the door was sent home. My son didn’t cry and didn’t complain. He just went to get his hand fixed. He didn’t even want to come home from school. I only know this because the Principal called me in amazement at my son’s reaction.
So, you’ve got it tougher. You have to work harder and maybe suffer more pain. So what! From what I’ve read you appear to have your life together. We each make our own lives what they are. Middle and High School last a very short time. If height really bothers you move to an area where the average height is smaller. Heck, I took a vacation out west to Wyoming and I felt absolutely tall at 5’8”.
Over the years I have always had a "small build". Meaning that I am not that tall (I had a 6 inch growth spurt 2 years ago making me 5 foot 6ish, and that saved me from being considered a midget 0_0), and I am also very skinny.

If it makes you feel any better I'm often envious of people with smaller builds. Everytime I look for clothes (I get about 10% the selection), take a shower (the shower head is too low), cars (nothing sporty for me), chairs (nothing like spending college lectures in a strange parody of the fetal postion with those small desks) ,or any number of things a person of average build takes for granted. I'll admit there are definite advantages too, but it's not all roses :)
There are a few small-minded idiots out there who may equate size with worth (or big with stupid), but like Ruaidhri said that's their problem. The vast majority of the people may be influenced by size as a first impression, but anyone who is worth caring about will see past that almost immediately and see us for who we are whether it's big, small or somewhere in between. As for the rest, fuck em.

Is there a natural tendency for tall people to slump over? There was a guy at work who just reminded me of an ape. He was tall but slumped over and let his long arms kinda hang down. He was pretty hairy too, and the whole picture together just screamed "gorilla"
Please, if you are tall don't be that guy!!

Yeah, I was like that for a while because my back and shoulders couldn't support my height/weight while I was upright. I gradually strengthened them and now my posture is awesome. Also, it is a lot easier to slump at school/work when the tables are so low and you adjust to that by hunching.

I have yet to figure out what guys think of it.
I think small and thin can be beautiful. I personally am attracted to women who are more on the thin side because I'm a big guy. Perhaps it makes me feel more masculine to have a smaller woman but by no means is a thinner woman a replacement for the buttyliciousness of a thick woman. It's just different.

As has been posted in other threads, I'm only 5'2". Sometimes I like being small too, but most of the time it can just be a pain in the ass. Like when you're standing in line and can't see over people or when driving a car or trying to reach for something that's up high. It can also be scary to be a small female, especially when you're by yourself (ok, so that goes for any female of any height). There are times that it's nice though, you do tend to feel very feminine, especially when you're with a tall guy and you don't usually have to worry about being taller than the guy you're dating (not that I wouldn't date a guy who was shorter than me, I just don't tend to have that problem). I think like any kind of build people have, being smaller has it's pros and cons.

Ruaidhri's younger son sounds much like myself; I've been picked on in school prior to highschool, but never reacted in any adverse manner, and had the habit of walking away. Because of this even my buddies had then pasted me as kind of a wuss; but believe me, it's the truely strongest that walk away, even when the situation seems deserving of some action.
I'm 19, and have yet to have had a serious fight, or cause any sort of injury. And no, slap fights with your sisters don't count.
they are very macho, trying to make up for their lack of physical masculinity. That's basically true, to one stand point. Another is that it's their only weapon for attracting women; though it often backfires (note Mr. Niceguy threads, and confidence).

I'm pretty comfortable with my height and overall size now, but before I really wanted yo grow. My dad is about 5'10 and he sometimes calls my shortness a result of bad eating habits. I can eat more than him. :D And I am dedicated to keeping my health good while he smokes weed and does not exercise at all. I've just reached my peak height it seems.
On the subject of metabolisms... It's great. I can eat so many damn things and I suffer very little consequences if I stray from healthy foods. And then I can stop working out for a few weeks and then start up again... and in one or two weeks I'll be better than before.
Now on my favorite subject... the martial arts. My height can sometimes prove to be a hindrance if I have to grapple with a considerably larger opponent, but people of my weight class and experience level usually lose to me in grappling matches. Most small people should never allow themselves to be taken to the ground to wrestle, so I have to work on other techniques to make sure that I never hit the ground for too long. The great thing about my size is I can move very fast and in very limited space. In my ninjustsu class, the larger guys roll and have to take up a large surface area to complete the roll. I can do it in about a fourth of the space they need and at a faster speed. Then whenever we spar, my kicks and punches come out faster than anyone else's attacks. Evasion is also made easier thanks to my body type.
I do agree that smaller people like me should try to look into martial arts. In untrained combat, the larger person will almost always win due to sheer strength and reach alone. At least in doing martial arts, one learns to use the entire body to create power. A punch thrown simply with the arm while being supported by an unstable stance can hurt, but a punch thrown by following with the entire body and backed up by a stable stance can result in knock outs or open an opponent up for an even stronger attack.

Similar story here. I've never been in 1 on1 fight before, and I'm proud of it. That being said, I could have saved myself a lot of grief by fighting back just once. You don't have to win, you just have to make it known that harassing you is going to be more trouble than it's worth. Some common sense applies though, like not 'snapping' on anyone you can't handle. You want to draw the line, not get beaten senseless!
well...as evidence of my sig. I just go super saiyan on them.
:P
Let's see what I can contirbute. I'm 5"7ish and 130lbs and 19. So I'm short and 20lbs underweight aswell.(fast metabolism).
But honestly, it kicks arse. I can eat whatever the hell I want.
I could fix it, I could get some protein powder shakes and lift weights. I could just wait until I'm older and my metabolism slows down. I have choices. It's alot better than to be born with god slow metabolism. Like Setric said, I bet he has a far harder life as far as dealing with negative comments.
I don't know, it use to bother me, but It doesn't at all. If it really bothers you just lift weights so you look toned/good enough to keep you confident. Even then, unless you go through miracle work outs...you're going to have to accept and LIKE how you look.
With myself, I like me alot :P. If i could improve anything it would just be like my forearms. Very misleading because they are smaller than I'd like.
but I can always fix it. And it really doesn't matter too much. There's so many other things I can do to make up for it.
Wow...you just basically described me, minus the age o_o;

I'm 180 and about 6 foot. I lift wieghts and stuff so im not really a lard ass or anything (i look much smaller for some reason). I couldn't imagine being smaller as I have always been a somewhat buff guy. It does make my stamina rather low though with long distance running.(not slow however) I hate those small guys who think they are better because they can run further but not faster than me. It sure makes running a mile in 8 minutes rather exausting. I don't even eat over 2000 calories a day but i maintain weight unless i sweat hardcore every day. I like to workout in a hot sweatsuit to burn off extra calories.
On the fighting thing i don;t have any real skills except a fast reaction and being able to over power guys even slightly bigger than me. I love when smaller guys run at me just to have me swat them away. :D I don;t like fighting much anyway, but if i have to i am winning it.

That makes no sense. Sweating is the body getting rid of heat while exercising. If you can't get rid of that heat, you are going to cause yourself problems and likely not get as good a workout. Your body will say "jeez, I'm hot, I better *stop* burning calories so I don't overheat" instead of what you are going for.
Don't believe me?

Im 190 in cm and weigh 85 kilos, and i like it that way, i can eat w/e i want and push little people aside... no just joking, they push me aside ;)
My height and posture has never caused me any grief, im able to see over most crowds, im still the frontman when its time to move the bar(i make way for my friends and spot where its best to do so) Im pretty much the tallest in the group of friends, but my entire group of friends are pretty tall, avrg at 185 orso.
But, a very good friend of mine is short and by short i mean hes like 170cm, and he is always trying to defend himself on w/e subject comes up. but hes the only short person in the group of friends that are all around 185cm. We named him the Pitbull though, even though he isnt the biggest fucker around, he sure goes for the victory in every fight, that dude doesnt give up. Size for guys doesnt matter that much i think, short guys can kick tall guys and tall guys can kick short guys(to much depends on a fight to say that height has a big impact on it.. or it has to be extreme differences).
But i think petite(small) females are constricted to dating shorts guys, its just looks goofy seeing a short girl walk around with a tall guy. same as a small male can never date a average girl or above average.. the stuff just looks silly! :)

5'7" and sometimes 145 lbs, other times 142. I'm not that chunky, but I'm trying to watch what I eat. I can still do at least 8 chin-ups on a bar, which is still pretty good, but I can't do sit-ups worth jack.
If you're small, try not to sweat it. Make your brain take up the rest of the slack, believe me, developing a sharp tongue can hurt an enemy as much as it does a right hook, if that's what you're worried about.

I see advantages to taller and smaller girls. My first girlfriend was 5'11", only a few inches shorter than me, and it made it nice when we did things together. After we broke up, one of the girls I used to go to school with sat in my lap in a playful manner. She was normal height, and it felt weird... I was used to having someone sit on my lap who was eye to eye with me when she was there. Small girls are fun. You can pick them up and cuddle them :).

I'm 5'5'' and I kind of always thought I was tall. >.> Perhaps it's because my best friend is 5'1''. That might be it. I don't have a 'thin' body shape to say, I call myself voluptous. (And it's true curses. ^^;) I get classified as 'cute'.
Anyway, though my boyfriend is a fair bit taller than me. He's 5'9''-ish. I've dated men who were shorter and thinner than me. I'm still on good terms with one. I don't see a problem with small body frames on men or women.

At 21, I'm only 5ft and depending, I can weight between 118 to 123. And I am very ample as well in the chest, so, whatever. Yeah, I've gotten the whole "cute and adorable" thing from my friends and the newest ones are "pint sized" and "fun sized". If they have to call me cute, I'd rater be called "darling". But whatever. Not worth getting worked up over.

Its funny reading the wieghts and heights of people. At 6'1'' and 270, such a state does not even seem concievable to me.

So yeah Trump, why do people in the UFC go into saunas to drop 20 pounds for a fight?

"he can only do that because he is small.
He can only run marathons because he has long legs.
He can only write in Perl because he took a programming course.
He can only see Saturn because he has a telescope.
He can only buy that house because he spent 25 years paying it off.
He can only speak German because he was born in Germany.
Just ignore them. I'm only 6'0 and Ive never done a pull up as far back as I can remember. Doesnt bother me a bit.

Yea, I've got a medium build and I can get through crevices in caves that other people on my team can't because I can contort my body.
In short, I'm fat and I can go where small people can as easily as they can, if not a bit slower.

I don't got that much of a build, but I do have quite the agility. People take a while when we race in class to catch up to me, or to get ahead of me. Sometimes, whenever I play Tag with a bunch of kids (and some my age, heh, it's fun to relive the past), I'm usually the evasive and tough one to catch.
I'm skinny, 5'4, weigh 90+/100 lb., and people tend to poke fun at how skinny I look (including my parents). What they don't know is that my looks can be decieving, and it comes with both an advantage and a price to pay.
Right now, I'm trying to gain more weight, and it seems to be working.

Bobbybirdtree, if you want to compare yourself to people who train rigorously for that kind of activity be my guest, but I'd wager you don't do it that often. Also, ask yourself... do you want to burn healthy calories or just sweat out 20 pounds of water weight only to gain it back the next time you have a drink? The only reason those people do it is so that they can meet the requirements of a lower weight class and hopefully gain a size advantage (which doesn't really work since they are all doing the same thing).

Boxers do the same thing when they need to meet the weight requirements. It certaintly does not make them any healthier, and if the other boxer is a great fighter, losing that water weight so fast might just screw them. To lose weight, it really depends on the person... If there is too much fat, running and aerobics will do wonders. If there is too much muscle, less weight and more reps to keep definition is usually the best way to go.
I'm just generalizing here.

It's the plateau that gets me. I can excerise and drop weight fairly quickly, to a point. Once I reach a certain weight, the progress stops. Last time, I hit the plateau, walked/jogged 3-4 miles a day for 4 months without shedding a pound - got frustrated and stopped (even stopped drinking Soda entirely, no fast food, etc). Any suggestions?

Don't focus on weight. Gauge your body by it's mass; and tell me that you aren't trying to look like Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie.
How are you eating, by the way? When you are being as active as you are, and have adequate aerobic excersize as you seem to have, a good thing to do is cut portion sizes so that you eat maybe 4-5 times a day (or about every 3 hours).
Even an allopathic medicine book ("Protein Power") suggested this.
Whole foods, cooked or raw, as long as you make it at home (or have a reliable restraunt), should be the best. Meat is fine, too; just make sure it's lean, chicken or fish.
Maybe you might want to pick up that "Eat Right 4 Your Type" book that Fujin went with, as well; it's really a good read. I'm pressing this because most people are often way-sided by either "excersize for weight" or "diet for weight", when it's really a combination of both.
If you need more help, the Martial Arts Planet health forum is superb; trainers, martial artists themselves, some medicine practicitioners, etc. post there. Link (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32).

Yeah what akitaka said. He's pretty much given you all the help you need there. Just keep in mind that there is a limit to how much weight one can lose... If you try to lose too much weight, you will become very unhealthy. Get familiar with your body type, talk to experts, and then guage your ultimate goal.

It's actually more healthy to be a bit overweight, than the opposite. And as my sensei Koyama says, "baby steps...baby steps..." (as he slides into the middle splits)
...(and he's 70 years old).

When it comes to being a bit overweight it *is* more healthy to be that way, if you get sick and can't eat you won't do yourself harm because you have something to fall back on to survive.

Hmm.. thanks for the links, time to read up. My plateau is about 290, which is well above what I should be. I'm not trying to be in perfect shape, just healthy. My doctor suggested around 240 as a good weight (I'm a big guy). I can drop from 340 to 290 in about 6 months, but then I stay there indefinately.
I wonder if aerobic to the plateau, and then weight training would help (I've never done any weight training)?

Depends... I know aerobic exercises can burn off a lot of weight, but weight training might undo some of that. If you're going to weight train, you need to use light weights. Otherwise you'll become heavier with muscle. If you don't mind that, then go ahead. But if you want to shed some pounds, light weights will be your best bet.
Like let's say you are doing curls... You use a heavier weight and you can only curl it maybe... 5 or 6 times. If you keep doing this, you will gain mass. Now let's say you get a lighter weight... and when you curl, you can do it maybe 15 times. You will gain muscle and strength, but most of that muscle will be toned and not added to.

I'm a guy who had a huge growth spurt over 2 years (just turned 15 two weeks ago.) It's a nice change compared to all the fat people I see at school. I get a few comments about my weight, but it doesn't really bother me. While not a true athlete, I'm pretty good at sports and have crazy endurance (I once did 2,148 sit-ups in one night during the summer).
6 and a half feet tall, and 205 pounds.
And I'm only 16. I'm some kind of freakish man-tank.
Anyone have any idea what a healthy weight is for someone my size? I'm starting to work out more and I'm wondering if I should be shooting for less weight, or possibly a bit more.

The only way to lose weight is to work out more and eat less. It's extremely painful and takes much discipline to do but it is not impossible.
Not for me, I can lose and gain weight at a whim. I was just wondering if my weight seems normal for my height.

Don't sell weight lifting short. After a good set of weights (regardless of whether you do lots of weight few reps or less weight more reps) you should realize that it really gets your heart going. Obviously its not the same as aerobic exercise for your heart but you still burn lots of calories (I've seen things saying you burn more calories weight lifting than running for the same amount of time, but I don't know if this is true). So if you want to break up the monotony of running, try lifting some weights a couple days a week.
About eating, well I find myself not as hungry immediately after I work out. This may not hold true for everyone but if you feel like you eat too much try working out about an hour before you usually eat dinner. Grab a small snack so you have energy to work out and head to the gym. And when you do eat, just eat until you are not hungry instead of until you are full.
Really, your actual weight shouldn't matter. If you stop losing weight at a certain point that's alright as long as you feel good. After a good work out I know I feel much better. Just don't get discouraged, you might be gaining a little muscle and that's not a bad thing either!

^you should look into the Tabata excersize routine. Go here, and read the summary (http://www.warriorforce.com/newsletter/warriorwire3.htm).
I remember trying this out, and stopping, because my body type is considerably bad for it; even if I can gain mass, my joints will be same. But yes, it gets the heart moving very quickly.
