There should be some sort of screening process for new members, to prevent all these silly spammers from posting all the time. . .although I know a screening process isn't really possible.

Actually, some forums/membership sites have a picture of letters and numbers that you have to enter into the field provided. This is, of course, to prevent automated sign ups.
