Read it and weep.

First article. (http://www.westislandchronicle.com/pages/article.php?noArticle=6063)

Second article. (http://www.westislandchronicle.com/pages/article.php?noArticle=7475)

... Can anyone say, "RACIST PRINCIPAL!!"???

But seriously, this is just discriminating. Punishing a kid for eating with a fork and spoon isn't deemed "disgusting"; it's the cultural way most Pacific Islanders eat. The principal should be punished for what he've said.

Upset over Luc’s story, Gallardo confronted the lunchtime caregiver the next day and on April 13, she telephoned the school’s principal, Normand Bergeron. His reaction brought her to tears, she says. “His response was shocking to me,” Gallardo, who moved to Montreal from the Philippines in 1999, told The Chronicle. “He said, ‘Madame, you are in Canada. Here in Canada you should eat the way Canadians eat.’

“I find it very prejudiced and it’s racist. He’s supposed to be acting like a professional. This is supposed to be a free country with free expressions of culture and religion. This is how we eat; we eat with a fork and spoon.”

Luc’s father, Aldrin Cagadoc, was also surprised by the comment. “I can’t believe even the principal would say that,” he said. “A person of that calibre, I wouldn’t expect him to say that.”

And hey! Why get disgusted over a Filipino child eating with a fork and spoon, when there are CHINESE AND JAPANESE CANADIANS STILL EATING WITH CHOPSTICKS?

Yay, a brother from another mother!

I eat with a fork and spoon. After my parents have heard about this controversy, my mom tried making me eat with a knife, instead of a spoon.

Cut myself accidentally.

Shit, here in in the US of A as long as your not stabbing the kid next to you they dont care how you eat. Way to go Canada, give that kid a eating disorder while your at it :P

This dude has serious issues. It's not about the way people eat. If it was that deep, everyone would be in the same uniform, same haircut, same social pattern (sound familiar) just to not come off offensive to the others. Way to be diverse. I 'blam' that principal. - 1 out of 5 stars.

“I said, ‘Here, this is not the manner in which we eat.’

“I don’t necessarily want students to eat with one hand or with only one instrument, I want them to eat intelligently at the table,” he said. “I want them to eat correctly with respect for others who are eating with them. That’s all I ask. Personally, I don’t have any problems with it, but it is not the way you see people eat every day. I have never seen somebody eat with a spoon and a fork at the same time.”

Should speak for itself. Being the principal, you can do one of two things. Embrace the change and allow others to see that it's something outside their own technique OR isolate the incident and try to stop individuality. That system needs an overhaul, yesterday.

You don't need to hear a young child say:

“Mommy, I don’t want to eat anymore,” Gallardo says Luc told her at the kitchen table April 11. “My teacher is telling me that eating with a spoon and fork is yucky and disgusting.”

Hmm. I may try this way of eating when I get the chance. Though I won't know how to really go about it. What the hell.

Puta ang ina ng prinsipal!

I eat with a fork...just because I'm lazy and it uses one hand... Sometimes with spoon.

You. I understood the first line. It'd be appreciated if you spoke English.

Hey, it's Quebec aka Classy-land. Surprising? Absolutely but remember how classy Quebec people are.. some of them anyway.

Take a spoon and fork. Then, collect the bits of food onto your spoon by moving them with your fork. Proceed the spoon into your mouth for consumation.

And Jethro.... "Putang-ina, Prinsipal," indeed.

Sheeeeet, they caught me with 2 razor blades while HAVING AN IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION. I didn't get in trouble... But they probably documented it.

Geez did you go to the same redneck highschool I went to? My Ac/Dc electronics teacher tried to sell a few of us Full Auto Tec-9's out of the back of his cadilac in the school parking lot one year. Had ziplock bags of ammo with him too! Oh mr. k, you racist insane psycho redneck, how I miss you. :innocent:

That's ridiculous.

I can picture the schools here in Japan doing it to a Japanese student if they came in and started eating their lunch with a fork instead of chopsticks. But not to a student who looks foreign, as would be a closer analogy to the filipino student in Canada. They would probably be surprised and awed if the foreign-looking students could even use chopsticks, much less use them correctly.

...although as long as you are able to pick up food, unless you do it by stabbing something to pick it up, there aren't a whole lot of ways you can go wrong with that particular type of utensil.

I dont use knives that often when im eating unless i need to cut meet, most of the time i use fork and spoon and im not even from the area's that use fork and spoon. I just do it because i have been raised eating a variety of Asian Foods and most of them i was using the fork and spoon and so it stuck.

Thats shit though, that princepal should be fired, fired and not allowed to work within schools again, reminds me of a time some kid at a school near me was expelled for repeatly breaking a asian kids chopsticks and throwing a plastic fork at him, it happened several times. Once the kid was expelled he got his Ass beat by the Asian kids brother and friends, Karma my friends Karma.

Ask the French Principal. But watch out, don't touch his poutine; no one BUT French people can only touch their own poutine.

Sounds to me like the problem was the kid just being a messy eater at the table. After all he's only 7 years old, it's hardly surprising. It's just like kids being taught not to eat with their hands because it makes a mess.

From the 2nd (less biased) article they actually give an explanation from the caretakers point of view. Maybe the lunch monitor just decided after the tenth time that the reason why he was being a messier eater than the other kids and was not improving was because of his abnormal method of eating?

In such a case, she was perfectly justified in trying to get him to eat in a different manner. After all if noone disciplined him for fear of being called a racist, then he would never learn how to stop being messy and disruptive.

Having said that, the principal did seem like a bit of an ass when talking to the mother though.

Seems to me like a rather effecient way of eating. I don't use my spoon that often, but when I'm eating I've been known to use bread or a knife to push food onto my fork. Sometimes those last bits of vegetables like to scoot around the plate if you try to pick them up with just the fork.

If he was being a real slob then I can see why the lunch monitor tried to correct it, but the principle went way too far. Once it is stated that this is the traditional way these people eat then there is absolutely nothing you can that won't be construed as racist.

At the same time.

To be honest, it is something I've never seen done on a regular basis. As I said, I have used things to push food onto my fork. It's effecient, but for the most part I'm a one utensil guy. Most people in the US and Canada eat with just the fork to scoop.

Man, I had a long post all ready but then my co-worker blew a gasket and told me to get off her computer, lol.

Anyways to sum it all up. Wow, bullshit.

Being raised here in the U.S I was taught to use the fork and knife method. But, I see my relatives use the fork and spoon method all the time and although it's different I wouldn't say it's disgusting.

You can scoop anything with a knife (Edit: Fork. Mah bad) just as well as with a spoon (Including Rice).... For the most part. So i don't even bother with spoons anymore.

Um.... And the knife is used to cut stuff

Cherub Rock
05-15-2006, 08:37 PM
Yeah the knife is important when it comes to cutting meat and whatnot, but it's also good for the whole pushing food ordeal. For the most part I never touch my spoon when I eat. I've been known to even attempt to use the fork for ice cream and pudding, although it is less effective.

The fork with practice is just as good for scooping rice and various other vegetables. Unless you're eating soup the spoon is just a more clumsy scooping utensil.

If you scoop rice with your knife and...eat the rice off your knife, wouldn't it cut your lips or something? Anyway, you can also cut stuff with your spoon.

No not really.

Wait.... Are you telling me you never ate rice with a fork before? You never went to a Asian restaurant (Fastfood or otherwise) and was given only a fork?

Like Panda Express only gives forks for example...

Jay

Won't rice fall through the fork's gaps?

Rice tends to clump together when it's served as a dish. So individual grains stick to the next grain to the next grain... etc.

Personally I eat only with a bowie knife, soup like things I lift by the bowl and drink, meats I pierce and eat as ka-bobs, bit o' bread to scoop any vegetable like things onto the blade and scoop 'em into my mouth.

And my school never once complained

I think the principal's comments are ignorant.

However, I wonder if the child actually was doing "gross" things with his food? He's still a kid and it hints in the article that he was "turbulent". Perhaps the child was a brat and that also brought attention on him.

"I wonder if the child actually was doing "gross" things with his food?"

Is that implying anything about your spoon and fork? There are other ways to come off as gross. Chewing with your mouth open as one example.

... I've got your point.

And a "new" article about it. (http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=c5a28d8d-f9c5-46a0-b882-00d5920e382b&k=64830)

It was sort of a misunderstanding, they thought it was gross of him because he was rushed to quickly finish his food (in which in this case, rushing a meal always ends up messy), whereas it was not tolerating to call him a pig, and to tell his parents the "proper Canadian way of eating".

Sidenote: Picture of Filipino boy, Luc Cagadoc, included. Cute kid.

And as a real human I don't care how others eat.

I don't get this...Canada, what have you done? How can you force people to live as you say? What will come next? All canadians need blonde hair and blue eyes? All non-canadian races are disgusting because they eat with spoons? Wow, we had this already, right? ...like 60 years ago somewhere in europe...

Better yet, let's dump all of them into a huge bowl-like trench, pour hot-ass gravy on 'em, then chuck in chunks of cheese that would melt with the gravy and the heat within the bowl.

Say what?

First of all, the kid is what-- seven? Show of hands, who at age seven ate in any kind of "proper" fashion? Not me.

And just the fact that they separate him is wrong, because that stigmatizes him as much as the scolding does. They single him out and his classmates are going to see that and do it themselves. This poor kid.

And who cares how he eats? If it's not bothering the other kids, then what does it matter? If he wants to change it, then he will as he grows older.

And people wonder why we have an entire generation of fucked up children.
