View Full Version : How much of your parents do you take after?
Some people look equal halves of their parents, the way their genetic makeup decides them to be, and should be the way we look, at least in theory. However, some people take more after one parent over the other- whereas some change, as their looks shift over the years, from one parent to the other. Maybe it is the different hormones kicking in, maybe not.
What do you think?
Personally, I think girls have a tendency to look more like their father, and the other way around with boys. Though I don't really know, this is all a my own take. But I do think physically all children have more parts taken from their mothers, the moment they are conceived, to the nine months they spend in utero, etc.
By the way, I take after my mother a lot more, and that has been confirmed by others, though some of my father's features are kicking in, from the mean eyes to the broad jawline.
Of course, you may take after the intangibles, like behavior, thought pattern, etc.
Personally, I think girls have a tendency to look more like their father, and the other way around with boys.
My mother's friend that knew I was coming into the classroom to deliver a message from my mother while I was there recognised me without me even asking around for her. When I asked why, she said it's because I look like my mother.
There's support for your theory.

I don't know. I do know that a lot of guys my age tend to be closer to their mother, whilst most chicks my age are closer to their father. As in, spending time together and having the same hobbies. Weird, huh?
I myself have blond hair from my mother, but the physique of my biological father. Or so my mother tells me. Sometimes, I do things that remind my mother of my father. Things I couldn't possibly have imitated from him, as I've only seen him like 8 times in my life.
Which is funky.
Other than that, I have nothing in common with my parent, nor my stepfather. I get irritated by them most of the time. If I had to describe them with one word, that word would be 'mundane'.

I get along fabulously with my dad. I get to be an anomoly!
Just a shame I haven't seen him in a year or so. Lazy git.
That said, it's pretty much only looks that I take after my mother in. I've noticed myself sounding the same and saying the same things as my father lately, which I'm desperately trying to put a lid on, as I don't want to take after him in ANY aspect, especially tone of voice and what I say.

I've got my father's general laziness, but also his smarts. I've got my mom's cleaning impulses and organization impulses. I've got my mom's side of the family's body type, I've got my dad's gap. And eyesight. I've got both of their determination, and it's friday so I dont feel like thinking much more.

I don't think I look a lot like either of my parents, especially now. But I've seen pictures of them when they were younger, and I look kind of like my dad when he was young. We both have really, really blonde wavy hair. And when he was in his 20s, his hair was almost as long as my hair is now! And we both have blue eyes. I have my moms nose and skin type. I have my moms small body but my dad's athleticism (I consider dance to be a sport!). They were both music majors in college, so I guess I inherited some of that musical ability from them.
I'd also like to add to my theory that once people start getting older, as in becoming old farts age, their looks change again- possibly to the reverse of the sexual hormones. I think that once men hit old age, female hormones kicks in, and the other way around with women, though I don't have data at the moment, nor feel the need to look for it. Given how much hormones can alter physical change within people, reversal of sex hormones probably would alter people, if it is true.
It's also interesting that people tend to pick up behaviors they hated in their parents, even if they realize it. Anyone else feels that way?

Physically, I don't take after either of my parents in the least. :P
Which is most likely because I'm adopted. I know I look a bit like my biological dad, same-shaped eyes and I've got his face shape, while I'm pretty sure I got my nose, hips and young-looking face from my birthmom. But, as I don't really know that much about them, I'm not sure where I inherited most of the other stuff from. But for mannerisms, I get told I sound like my mom and have some the same speech strangenesses that she does. And I know I picked up my love of rhythm from my dad. :)

Looks-wise, I think I look more like my dad. People say I look like mom but I really don't see it. I have the exact same hands and feet as my dad. I also have the body frame of my dad's mother. My dad has gotten fat in his old age (okay, he's only 50) so I don't know if his original body frame was also similar to mine. My mom has huge breasts- no really, the biggest I have ever seen on anyone I've met. I, on the otherhand, wear an A. Definitely didn't inheirt that trait. Her body frame is also a lot different than mine. I look at my mom and try to figure out what I got from her and so far I've only figured out that I have eyes like my mother. It's very odd.
The one thing I don't know where I got it from is on my left hand, my pointer finger is my longest. I have yet to meet anyone else with this condition o__O
Personality-wise, I think I am also more like father. This could be because for the last 5 years I've been living primarily with him. My mother is very sensitive, whereas I'm more hardened. I have similar interests to my mom, but we're also a lot different. My dad is also smarter than my mom (no offense to my mom >_>) and we have very similar views on things, so we relate better.
IRT to your observation on girls looking like their fathers and the other way around for boys- I've found that to be true. Not only in my family, but my best friend has 3 siblings. She and her younger sister look more like her father (though my friend is more an even mesh between her parents); her brother looks like a male version of her mom; and her youngest sister looks like her mom and my friend. It's very interesting. And kind of humorous.

Looks wise - all my brothers and me (except one) look like my dad. Dark eyes, dark hair, structure. My other brother has light brown/blonde hair and blue eyes... so nobody ever thinks we're related. The only thing that resembles me to my mom is the shape of my eyes.
Personality wise - I get from my mother. Being weird, I get from her (or her side of the family). She's so understanding and I am too. Or really try to be.

If we're talking physically... Well, I have my mother's hazel eyes. Other than that, nothing really physically. I don't know if I take after my father or not-- I never knew him or even what he looks like-- but sometimes I think a few of my habits do, because my mom seems hellbent on eradicating them out of me.
Beyond that, I actually take after my grandmother in appearance; so much so, I've been mistaken for her daughter and not her granddaughter. Dark, almost-black hair (she did have black hair), pale skin with the inability to tan at all, etc.
Personality-wise... I don't know. On one hand, I am most certainly a female member of my family, because we all have short tempers, we're loud a lot, and we're restless as a whole. But on the other hand, you can certainly tell I was raised just as much by my (step)father, my grandfather, and my uncle, because they were all laid-back, occasional hell-raisers, which I also am.
I guess physically I take after the European side of my family, while personality-wise I take after the Native American side. :)
Other than that... I got my mother's and my (maternal) grandfather's intelligence. Unfortunately, I didn't inherit their ambition, because I really don't give a shit that I'm smart. I think I inherited my urge to see how things work and figure things out from my (real) father, since it seems to upset my mother a lot when I do that.
It's ironic with my mother-- we're so much alike on one hand that we can think on the same level, but we're also so different that we fight like cats and dogs. I also inherited her bipolar issue and paranoia. >_<

I tend to look like my dad 60% and mom 40%.
Yeah. Especially in the nose. We both have big noses, but his is far superiorly bigger. My mom's average sized nose cancelled some of his nose out or something.

I look like my dad. I get told that constantly too. My older sister is a half sister, with a different mother. I went to her mother's house not too long ago, she did a :eyepop: followed by a "YOU LOOK JUST LIKE YOUR DAD!!" I got to see a picture of my dad when he was 17, I definitely see the resemblance. He was 6'1 and 135 pounds most of his life, he's started drinking heavily, so now he's 6'1 135pounds with a 45pound gut  So that's where I get my insane metabolism from.
Brain wise I'm more like my mother, thank goodness. :frypan:

6'3" here I come! :D
But...I haven't grown an inch since 7th grade :gloomy: I'm 5'8", but I'm a giant compared everyone else in my family.
Seriously though, my brother I look like my mother and we're equaly as pale, My mother has black hair and black eyes, while my brother and I have dark brown hair, and light brown eyes.
My sisters look like my dad. Dark hair and burnt to a crisp. Last year I went outside almost everyday over the summer during the sunnyest times of the day, and my little 2 year old sister (who never goes outside) was still darker than I was. :boggled:
Personality wise, I'm more like my dad, not really booksmart (though I'm in a few AP classes.), but I'm really open minded with a sprinkle of common sense. We're also big fans of asian entertainment. I guess that's why my dad lived in both chinatown and koreatown when he first moved to Houston.
My mom...well she's booksmart! And she is nice and is a damn good cook (but so is my dad :P ) But she can be a bit of an airhead at times. (I still love her!)
I'm also a hairy beast. Well, that's stretching it. I have body hair, but it's strangely silky smooth, and a very light, almost reddish brown. My mom, dad, hell, everyone else in my family has no body hair. The older males have some sprinkles on their arms and legs, but nothing compared to me. :boggled:

nerd, your theory sounds very correct in my family. when people first meet my mom and I, they say we look alike. then they meet my dad, and say we are split-images.

Not to sound mean to the old fart, but look at Ruadhri's avatar. Imagine him with hair the same color as his hat, and you're pretty much looking at a picture of me. I like to think that I take after him in other ways aswell. He's a good man, and to be like him is an honor.
I am better than him at farting though.
I look more like my mom I suppose. I have dark skin and my dad is white so we don't always look entirely related. I have his chin and neck though. My personality is more like his too. Overall though, I have a pretty different personality from both my parents. Kind of like a combination.
I look like my dad and we share the same lame sense of humor. For example, he laughs at his own corny jokes and so do I. Then, if somebody says the same word enough times I laugh, as does he. Honestly, it could be the most boring word ever and I'll laugh. Table... table... table haha!
But I get my temper from my mother. She is a hot head and, although ashamed to admit it, I am too. I have more tolerance than she does so it takes me a lot longer to get angry though which makes it less bad I suppose. Damn you fiery latin temper that also gives me natural rhythm. Damn you indeed!

Personalitywise I take after my father a lot. That why we often have arguments, we are both equally stubborn.
Physically, I'd have to say it is a pretty equal split. Pictures of me when I was younger could be my mom, but I also bear a striking resemblance to the women in my father's side of the family as well. No one in our family can deny relations. :)

In my family it seems more like a curse.
My sister and I are copies of mom. My sis is blond, my hair is almost always dyed some odd colour, so people assume I'm blond too, because we look like twins. Our voices are the same to the point that her long-term live in boyfriend can't tell the difference between us until we say something out of character for the other. If you take pictures of me, my mom and my sister when we were each 5 or 10 years old.. you'd think you had triplets on your hands.
The only thing we seem to have gotten from our father was length (as in height, length of legs, length of fingers and length of feet, all of which are freakish compared to our mother).
And we are slowly turning into our mother.. which is absolutely terrifying for us. One of us will say something that's very mom-ish and then we turn in horror at each other.. :eyepop: .. since mom is right buggered up in the head in some very significant ways, we're working hard to avoid this.

physically wise, i take after both sides equally. moms side- long, black, matted curly hair, tan skin, dark eyes, bony fingers, slender wrists.. pretty much most of my body that isn't my gut. dads side- eyesight, teeth, large hands, gut, nasty feet, body hair... facial expressions are from my dad too i guess, mainly cause i have the same face structure.

I don't know really. People that see me say they see my dad. I always figured I was adopted because the only thing I see in comparison is the height. I don't think I look like my mom at all and I have plenty of people thinking I am another's race depending if it is skin colo(u)r or eyes. So, I don't know how to go about that.
I don't look overtly like either of my parents, but that's because I'm not 15 yet and my dad's pushing 60. Aging effect...
