...that you have access to here, and becomes popular(in an underground way) ends up having a "nerdy" stigma in Japan or is just plain old news.

I had a buddy go to Japan recently and some of the stuff I assume would be popular here wasn't so. Example, Sambomaster(which I love) was considered nerdy. What?? These guys are strict J-rock. This is the type of stuff that would be popular here.

If Jpop is so popular do men in Japan like it?

I always wonder what's popular there now and what people think they know about jpop and jrock music, becaused I noticed it's not very consistant soemtimes.

A) It takes a while to get over to America
B) Young Japanese prefer western acts
C) After graduation men have little time for music.
D) Jpop rules all.

Scary though. I met many 'men' who said their favourite band was Backstreet Boys.

lol. wow.

on your D rule, do you mean Jpop rules all in a sense that it's popular beyond control? Or did you yourself enjoy Jpop?

Rules beyond all control. I hate the stuff. Its jsut as bad and manufactured as any Brittan Aguilera crap, if not more so. At least most American pop girls and guys have had entertainment experience from a young age.

According to Hapacheese (where's he been lately?), the bands I like are either still relatively popular or unheard of... Heh.

I'm back :) Was at the grandparents' place over the weekend in Chofu, so no internets for me.

I only have one more caveat to Pooka's point: Japanese pop-culture moves at the speed of light. I go back every month, and literally, every month, new bands are "hot." I was listening to a song that came out earlier this year on my iPod, and someone commented on how "old" the song was. Sheesh.

However, j-pop doesn't rule as much as it used to. It's primarily hip-hop/R&B acts, mixed with random rock bands etc that get most of the attention nowadays.

Welcome back to the interweb.

And I don't plan on mentioning any Japanese music I like while I'm over there... :D

when you learn about your favorite bands from the opening credits of licensed anime, don't expect it to be on the cutting edge of popularity...

I find that older bands are better anyways (a la ウルフルズ), new stuff tends to... well, suck.

Heh... Speaking of which, I just picked up an ウルフルズ "best of" album while in Japan :D

That, along with Flexmind, and the new single by Yamazaki Masayoshi.

Most of my favorite bands are still doing lives over there.
Hawaiian6 did many, enough that they didn't have a new release, for almost 2 years. Meanwhile, Spitz (I'm not sure if they're still big) has released their PV DVD, as well as their latest album earlier this year.

I look at J-rock, and I notice most of the fandom is over in the U.S.; however, some of the bandmembers of such groups as "Glay" and "Lunasea" have flocked to side-projects, say, Jiro (glay) doing bass for the Predators, with the lead from the Pillows, and the drummer from Straightener.

...and I'm waiting on a "best tracks" from the Fishmans.

lol I think I might shut the lid too. I don't want to seem like the forign guy who guys

"oh oh! you heard of tlc? tlc! yeah they are so awesome i love their shidi especially the new crazy sexy cool one! amerikppon ichhi!!"

I think staying quiet might be a good idea until I know they are actually current.

How is Sambomaster nerdy?? wtf, their j-rock. That's masculine and "cool." So if Jpop is popular beyond control, even to the men?

No... Western pop is.
Or pop in general.
Probably because its more conformist in nature.

How do they feel about Brazillian bossa nova pop?

hapacheese

L'arc *is* popular in Japan... amongst young teenage girls. :D Although, I have to admit, despite my overall dislike of Hyde, I do sing some of their songs at karaoke... Except, I try to sing them in a normal voice, not the weird warbling that Hyde does.

Bossa nova pop? Hm... There's plenty of people that listen to it, but it's not really mainstream.

I know why. Because most of the Americans who listen to J-crap are Japanophiles with no real taste. In Japan, they have such a wide variety of their own music to choose from that they don't need to jump all over everything. Thus, stuff that's big here(in a sense) is actually just crap to them. :D

Check the weekly Oricon (http://www.oricon.co.jp/ranking/) charts. I saw Hilary Duff at number two, last week.

So what would be considered J-crap?
Cuz i really don't care what others think. And no, I am not a japanophile. My friends got me into it. And I happen to like Dir en Grey, T.M.R., Fairy Fore, Neverland, Miyavi, L'arc~en~ciel. Can't think of what else.
But, if you do have suggestions of Japanese bands to check out, lemme know.
